A couple thoughts:

If you think about it, it makes sense from an evolutionary perspective going back to primates and other mammals. Reproductive success doesn't give a s**t about anyone's feelings. Individuals who will venture outside their group/pack/territory for reproductive opportunities are going to have their DNA spread around further and more likely to survive local extension events. Individuals that don't have their lines lost to history more often than individuals who find such attractive.

But as humans we have the new problem of having sentience, intelligence, self-awareness, having formed societies and so on. We are complex and individual creatures who grapple with more than just evolutionary instincts in trying to make daily life make sense.

Something I've come to realize is that most women have more than just some form of instinct driving these preferences, as stable mates showing signs of high offspring success should also be competitively attractive. There clearly are social and socialization factors that amp up their preferences.

As a child growing up years 0 to 18, there is a tremendous amount of exposure to and presenting of as desirable a life of ease, partying, adventure, travel, irresponsibility and other things that infer high status amount peers, excitement, adrenaline rushes, wealth, lack of responsibility, etc, and damn little presentation and exultation of what for most people is "ordinary life". Modern communications media and internet have only served to amplify this.

I'd argue that the further back in our history, starting in the last century (pre-HBC), that as a society we taught our children more accurate expectations for their future lives and responsibilities - men would be working since they were boys to provide, women would be working the homes and raising children. I think we still impart that on boys to some degree, but with girls we have collectively put their expectations on a pedestal and in the stars (insert side discussion about human beings vs human doings as to why boys get the message they have to compete and produce vs girls just have to be pretty)

Even if we reverted back as a society with our messaging and emphasis, we wouldn't eliminate this, but it could be a lot better if there was a strong education from all vectors among our young to make serious & realistic choices, rather than believe that they too can just be a rich & famous jet-setting Instagram influencer like everyone else is (sic),
