Before I met my husband, I was pretty comfortable in my own skin. I experimented often with my appearance, hairstyles, clothes, but I rarely wore make-up. After I met him, I naturally wanted to be the most attractive to him. I grew my hair out, started to wear make-up everyday, wear elegant clothes, high-heels and I really loved who I've become, how put together I am.
But I started to loathe who I was without make-up and all dolled up.
Especially when one day my contact lense broke and my husband commented on me wearing glasses exactly with the words "It traumatised me seeing you like this". So now every time I need to have my glasses on in his presence, I feel anxious because he doesn't think I'm beautiful in them. (We're newlyweds, LDR and not living together yet, so he didn't have a lot of opportunities to see me in them). He is the objective, straight-forward type that doesn't sugar coat and won't tell me "I find you beautiful no matter what", because there are situations when he truthfully doesn't. It of course doesn't change how much he loves me, I know that he does very much, but this issue bothers me a lot.
I talked to him about this recently and he just said "It's okay". But I'm still left hanging with this anxious feeling. I love how I look in make-up and feminine clothes, all made up for him but when I take it off and wear something comfortable, I immidiately feel ugly and unattractive. Then I think to myself how awful it must be for him to look at me without make-up and compare me to my "better self".
It is a very new feeling to me and I didn't think I would ever feel this way about myself. I don't know what to do at this point. I would be really grateful for any advice!

This relationship is unhealthy and really odd. LDR and married?? Why would you do that? Don’t feel bad for him having to see you in comfortable wear, he’s just an asshole and definitely sees you as arm candy if he wants you look amazing at all times. Please divorce him, there’s no point you two being together

You can’t expect your partner to be dolled up 100% of the time, that is unreasonable. Your partner should find you attractive when you’re wearing glasses. It’s frankly insane that he would say he doesn’t find you attractive in glasses, let alone that he’s “traumatized.” My husband has genuinely thought me beautiful in my lowest moments, as every husband should. To say he’s “traumatized” seeing you that way, and that his rude comments have caused you so much anxiety, signals to me that this relationship is unhealthy. It’s fine if a man is straightforward. My husband will say “those glasses do not flatter you” or he will gently remind me about my food choices if I start putting on weight (as I do for him), but he would NEVER be rude about it. The lack of compassion here is astounding, frankly. You should not be made to loathe yourself in any state. What will he say when you’re a new mother and you don’t have the time or energy to be all dolled up? Or what if you get sick? It’s shallow and unreasonable to expect you to look your best all of the time and he should love you unconditionally and show you kindness no matter what. Good riddance to him.
