I'm struggling to understand how this can possibly be regarded as a sexual assault? Is she claiming that by wilfully sucking a guys dick in public, she sexually assaulted herself?

[–]CosmicKeys 15 points16 points17 points 12 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

There are unsubstantiated claims that she has made an accusation (edit: about a different person) or that her drinks were spiked. The media is definitely wanting her to be a victim on this one because it makes a better story. It's god damn awful that they're causing as much bullshit as twitter is.

[–]j1202 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe the sexual assault claim she made was about another incident that occurred later on that day, subsequent to the 2 lads she sucked off.

[–]Pete612 19 points20 points21 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Actually she is. Apparently sexual taboos are alive and well, the amount of abuse she's been getting is depressing and pathetic. Meanwhile people are murdered daily by gangs and nobody bats an eyelid.

As regards the underage thing it's BS - who's to say the guys weren't also underage? In Ireland, it's only illegal for an underage boy to engage in a sex act. Girls have a specific written immunity in law. I'm sure this disgusts you as much as it disgusts me...

[–]CosmicKeys 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Female pedophiles get less public shaming than this, that's repulsive.

[–]j1202 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

She's 17 so she is of the age of consent in Ireland anyway. The "underage" thing is about the distribution of the images involving what is (legally) a child involved in an explicit sex act.

As for the amount of "abuse" she is getting, about 90% of everything posted about her on twitter since last weekend was defending her and portraying her as a victim and having a go at those 10% actually calling her a slut or whore, etc.

The fact is she clearly was being a slut. If she actually had her drink spiked (unlikely), then it is awful. A much more likely scenario is she started drinking on her way to the concert and got fucking shitfaced and made a mistake. That's still bad and I definitely feel bad for her but it's her mistake and she has to live with it.

People should keep in mind this girl is only going into Leaving Cert (final year of secondary school) now and is no doubt going to have to suffer horrible shame for at least a couple of months. She probably won't even go back to school... I wouldn't.

She will just have to keep her head down until this blows over.

sorry I had to do it lol.

[+][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

(unlikely not for any specific reason, but because this squares better with my preconceptions)

[–]j1202 -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unlikely because drink spiking is really fucking uncommon and getting shitfaced drunk to the point of doing stupid things and maybe being a bit of a slut is really fucking common (at least in Ireland).

You dumbass.

[+][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Public blowjobs are also pretty uncommon, Bayes would like a word.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Incorrect, the Child Trafficking and Pornography act defines a child as anyone under 17. Perfectly legal to have the photos.

[–]j1202 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

In Ireland.

The photos have been disseminated worldwide via the internet. So whilst the Gardaí don't have an issue with it, international law enforcement might.

(They definitely won't, but you get what I'm saying)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm in Ireland, so I really don't have to worry about it. Obviously if your country has different laws on child pornography you should be careful

[–]PierceHarlan 30 points31 points32 points 12 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Here's my take.

Young woman and young man both do something that is, by any measure, stupid, debasing, coarse, and wrong. Neither has a reasonable expectation of privacy because they performed their act in a very public place, but their act is publicized far beyond what either expected. SHE is mortified that the world sees her engaged in an act that she knows is not consistent with traditional notions of femininity, even though there is no question that she did it. He, apparently, is satisfied that the world will think of him as "lucky" for being the recipient of oral sex.

So how do some of the usual gender pundits react? They have a conniption, of course, worse than if the girl had been beaten, about gender double-standards, but their solution is to call for new rules about "cyber-bullying" -- thus underscoring, emphasizing, and making clear that the worst thing that can happen to a young woman is to be seen to act in a way that's not consistent with her femininity.

Why are we surprised by the double standards at work here? And why are we only upset when the double standards work against women? After all, this is a culture where female teachers are given a slap on the wrist for doing to boys what male teachers get put away for years doing to girls. I see virtually no reaction from the gender pundits over that double-standard, but it stems from the same sort of antiquated mindset (lesson: even rape and statutory rape are okay when they're done to boys and men -- because boys and men want sex all the time, under any circumstances; moreover, only the sex acts of men and boys need to be controlled with punitive prison sentences, because women and girls are incapable of acting in a sexual predatory manner that can hurt men and boys).

Maybe the real discussion we ought to be having about this case is about our coarse culture where anything goes, and about why public sex acts aren't appropriate -- for either girls or boys.

But then, what do I know?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very great point.

My position on all this is it all stems from female sexuality being more "valuable".

[–]AvgGuy101 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well said!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think it has to do with men or woman, as it has to do with power. The person giving the blowjob will always be seen as the subservient 'victim.' Whether if it was a guy blowing a guy, or a guy going down on a girl, or whatever. It's also about reaction and headspace. If you saw a photo of two junkies fucking on a corner, nobody would be calling either of them a stud. If you saw a really hot girl getting gone down on at a concert by a fat whale loser, you'd react differently than if you saw a hot guy going down on a whale of a girl. It's all about context, and I don't think it has anything to do with gender.

[–]PierceHarlan -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, I disagree with this. Males are seen as the sexually aggressive sex -- please see the comment about teachers who have sex with students. The sentencing disparity between men and women is absolutely astounding -- that's not an invention of the MensRights subreddit.

[–]Elethiomel 14 points15 points16 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except she's not claiming she was assaulted by the men in question. She claims she was assaulted after all of that by a different person. She made this claim before it blew up on twitter. She called the police and family from the concert venue to come pick her up.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A lot of misinformation is coming to light in this thread.

First and foremost the age of sexual consent in Ireland is 17, this also stands for the distribution of pornography. The girl is 17, so by definition of Irish law this is NOT child porn.

Secondly, the Gardaí (Irish Police) are investigating, but not definitively the two incidents of oral sex. Irish media has reported that the girl did report an incident where she was sexually assaulted at the Slane Concert, but that is NOT related to the two incidents of oral sex.

She did not "claim rape" in response to the photographed incidents (apparently), but an entirely other case of sexual assault at the venue.

[–]vipt84 -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You sure about that?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • Child Trafficking and Pornography Act, 1998

2.—(1) In this Act, except where the context otherwise requires... “child” means a person under the age of 17 years.

So yes by default if she is over 17 it cannot be child porn

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Until I see this reported, I'm going to assume that you're just trying to muddy the waters. You have no link. No one else is saying this. I don't generally give the benefit of the doubt.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually if you look at a lot of the other comments you'll see that the claim that she was sexually assaulted by a different person, is being stated everywhere here.

For example here, here and here.

So plenty of other people are saying it.

Oh and Link, Listen!

[–]rapscallionx 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some huffington post employee posted about how there is a stereotype against women for being skanks and the girl is being tortured for sucking a dudes dick in public. It's like the huffington post (and feminists) are so up woman's ass's that every stupid mistake a woman makes has to be contorted somehow making her the victim.

[–]Michael_Romanoff 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Isn't her act the sort of the thing the slut walks celebrate?

Claims rape? The quote mentioning sexual assault in the article doesn't say too much, so I wouldn't jump into such conclusions. Time will tell, though.

Yes, she brought this on herself, but I'm sure she's going through hell right now and I wouldn't say she deserves that in any way for having oral sex in public, so people are right to consider her a victim.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah where's the assault claim? First I thought it was huffpo's usual journalism, but this is OP's fuck up.

Slane girl was supposedly assaulted by some OTHER dude.

[–]moskova 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think this may be a self made moral panic, portray an injustice being done and you're more likely to get more hits and karma from people getting outraged

[–]CosmicKeys 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago* (15 children) | Copy Link

She was a victim here, because the guy was not cyberbullied like she was. If twitter was erupting about #slaneslut talking about the guy you'd have a point. Not saying he isn't a victim in the (for example being shamed or accused of things), because the true story should be about the person who thought posting it to the net was a good idea. Not nice, people make drunken mistakes, fuck viral internet vigilantism.

As for the rape claims, yes. Police are investigating, leave it at that.

Edit: Copping downvotes as expected, but let me explain. You don't have to respect anyone for making a stupid sexual mistake in public, fine, but these are just some stupid teens at a concert. This person has suffered disgustingly disproportionate shaming to the point where they had to be given sedatives to calm them down. It shows a severe problem with the dehumanization process of the internet and targeted bullying and harassment. As someone who cares about men's rights I keep my details close to my chest because I don't want vicious internet bullies after me either.

[–]giegerwasright 11 points12 points13 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

because the guy was not cyberbullied like she was.

I would say that false accusations of sexual assault, drugging, and statutory are quite a bit more serious than "what a dumb slut" comments on the internet. So. Who are the real victims here?

[–]CosmicKeys 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What false accusations. At the moment there are only unsubstantiated allegations.

[–]DarthOvious 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Actually she willingly sucked these guys dicks at this concert. I'm not sure how she is even able to claim sexual assault here when there was a crowd of people watching her while she was doing this.

[–]CosmicKeys 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The current unsubstantiated rumours we likely shouldn't be discussing without serious skepticism are that she was sexually assaulted by a different person.

[–]DarthOvious 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh I see, what you're saying is a different person from these two guys sexually assaulted her? In that case then you you're right.

[–]DarthOvious 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She was a victim here, because the guy was not cyberbullied like she was.

Give it time. I'm sure the feminist establishment will find out who these boys are and shame them somehow.

[–]Jesus_marley 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Both the boy and the girl were trending on twitter with their own hashtags. The only difference between the two were that the boy didn't seem to really care and the girl did judging from how they reacted to the commentary. So is it really a matter of diproportionate treatment or rather a matter of disproportionate reaction to it?

[–]CosmicKeys 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So is it really a matter of diproportionate treatment or rather a matter of disproportionate reaction to it?

It's both the disproportionate reaction and the types of reactions. MRAs having nothing to lose by showing some compassion here.

[–]Jesus_marley 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She was a victim here, because the guy was not cyberbullied like she was.

This is what you stated. I stated that both parties received the same attention for their actions an that it was her reaction to the treatment that has garnered all of the sympathy. She wasn't any more of a victim than he was. To be honest, I really don't care if she wants to blow a complete stranger. It doesn't affect me in any way and she is free do to it. BUT if she didn't want this shit to go out into the public sphere, she shouldn't have done it in public. That advice also applies to the guy, if his reaction to the photo would have been the same as hers.

[–]oneiorosgrip 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is that it looks like the same behavior directed at both parties is being labeled cyberbullying in reference to her, not because people did anything different (they were both in the photo everywhere it was shared) but because of her response was different.

On a side note, looking at the huffpost article, the only people shown in it discussing having shared the image are other girls. I'm curious whether this is representative, or coincidental, because if it's representative, it's pretty consistent with my experience with slut-shaming as a primarily female against female behavior.

[–]moskova 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree, some of the comments on here were quite frankly a little worrying

[–]moskova 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think social conditioning means it is less ok for a woman to be considered easy whilst a man can be considered lucky. I bet you that the girl has been under more intense scrutiny and the comments more negative about her than the guy. All in all I think it is quite understandable for her to react the way she did.

[–]Jesus_marley 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Again, I maintain that the reactions from the public have been pretty much the same for both parties. When you make a public spectacle, people are going to talk about it. That is a basic reality and nothing will change it. It is entirely possible that the guy is just as embarrassed by the entire thing as she is but rather than simply staying out of the spotlight like the guy did, she has instead cultivated more attention by making it clear just how "affected" she has been by the comments. That is the difference here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Tagging as 'Excuses False Rape Accusations

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I will not 'leave it at that'.

Yeah, let's wait until after the guy is lynched to speak the fuck up. I'm sure that's a brilliant strategy.

How fucking retarded can you be?

[–]AvgGuy101 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Sexual assault? Unless Ireland has a stricter age limit than the US, then I don't see how this is sexual assault.

Cyber-bullying? Was the girl threatened via the internet? It looks the girl was filmed in a public place where virtually anyone could see what was happening. In this day and age when virtually every cellphone has a camera built in, most people have a camera/video recorder in their pocket and people are constantly being filmed doing stupid stuff in public. Are all of these people being cyber-bullied?

Maybe people should simply learn to take responsibility for their actions.

[–]squirtkip -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No, the main issue is that this went on Facebook, twitter and instragram with strangers scrutinizing this intimate (yes, there were other people there, but she knew those people) life moment. The guy in the Huffpost video is just an idiot where he's making it all about the sexual acts and saying it was worse than the Steubenville case.

[–]TheGDBatman 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

intimate (yes, there were other people there, but she knew those people) life moment.

When you're in public, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.

[+]Facelessx -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

True enough, but that still doesn't justify the amount of shaming this girl went through by people all over the world.

[–]j1202 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

(yes, there were other people there, but she knew those people)

This is factually inaccurate.

[–]squirtkip -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They looked like they knew each other and the way it was written I took them for her/his friends. I may be wrong about who the people are, but there's still a huge difference between fifty people who are there and can get more than the surface of what's going on and the thousands of other people who saw this picture on the internet and started to but her.

[–]millertime65 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How much different would it have been if it was a picture of the guy giving her oral sex?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It would have been the exact same, she would have been the victim.

[–]millertime65 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think so. A lot of guys get made fun of for giving oral

[–]Mytecacc 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She is the victim of a bullying and shaming campaign by the sexually repressed and immature.

Its residual catholic sexual repression that caused those people to behave like that.

[–]skillsne 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Uhm.. where?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just added it, my bad.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Drunk + regrettable behavior = spiked drink. Always..

[–]kurokabau 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, there is certainly a double standard here. She is being labelled a slut (though she did do it to two people) while he is praised.

Edit: Reading the comments i've learned that she is accusing sexual assault from a completely different guy which we do not have information on.

I'm quite firmly on the girl's side here. What she did was shameful and what she gets from online bullying is all down to her. But there is a clear and obvious double standard in that the men are receiving none of the shame she is.

[+][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

At that age, young peoples hormones are going wild(geez, I am not even 30.........but). Right or wrong, it never should have been recorded. Right or wrong, no one should of cyber bullied the young adult, over the young-ins lack of self control.

Personally, I am against promiscuous behavior, and view it as personally and socially destructive. Let's face it, this young adult had a serious lapse in judgement moment. She allowed her hormones to rule her, and engaged in a pretty scummy situation. The two older adults she was with, are just as scummy though. Perhaps more scummy because of how they are willfully using another human being in such a manner.

I think the youngest, the one under the legal age of maturity, and more likely then not more ruled by their hormones, shouldn't be held to task as seriously as the two older adults, who where of the legal age of maturity

Who knows, maybe the young person is feeling genuine emotional pain over a hormonal slip-up, or pain from the social embarrassment of it being caught on film.

People talk of women being promiscuous whores, but what of men who are, or want to be promiscuous whores? Add in to it all the debate on who really owns a picture of a person(is it ethical for a society to allow private ownership of another persons direct, actual image?).

Regardless, suppose she was really horny and wanted it(different people, regardless of gender, have different sex drives), why should people harass or deride her? If someone does something you disagree with, you should simply have little to do with them.

I am not going to write a blank check.

It was a scummy situation where scummy people made scummy decisions.

Victim my ass she knew what she was doing. Sad to see she is being bullied about it but at a concert you're not entirely hidden.

[–]Frogtarius 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She's a victim..... Of her own stupidity.

[–]Mytecacc -5 points-4 points-3 points 12 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

She was publicly bullied, ridiculed and shamed, then she was hospitalized and sedated because of the bullying ... she is a victim of bullying.

This forum is getting dumber by the day.

[–]pocketknifeMT 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

she is a victim of bullying.

Ok, so what? Sticks and Stones constitute a crime, while words constitute free speech. People don't have to like and be nice to you, or even be polite.

Being a victim in this case is literally being a victim of other's wit and biting comments. Aren't all public figures victims of bullying by your definition?

[–]Mytecacc 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

So, the OP has some issue with people considering her the victim of the pair.

She is the only one that is being publicly bullied, humiliated and sexually shamed and then was hospitalized due the stress of an organized, on line bullying and shaming campaign, while he was lauded as a some kind of hero.

Long story short, she is the victim of the story.

[–]pocketknifeMT 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Victim of her own actions and the entirely predictable response from the rest of society?

She is a "victim" like someone who jumps into the tiger cage at the zoo who gets mauled is a victim; True in the strictest sense, but hardly sympathy inspiring.

"what did you think was going to happen?" will be the common refrain.

[–]Mytecacc -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

So?

Your thinking that its normal for an organized bullying and shaming campaign to be run against her and not him, doesn't all of sudden make them equally victimized by the bullying, or her not victimized by the bullying.

I am unsure of either your meaning here, or reading comprehension skills.

I didn't say she wasn't the victim, and I never said he was. I said she doesn't make a very sympathetic victim, like an idiot who jumps in the tiger pit isn't very sympathetic either.

Your feeling that she sort of got what she deserved and is to blame for the bullying campaign, doesn't make her any less of a victim of a bullying / shaming campaign in the situation. That's just a faulty logic called "victim blaming".

And I was initially responding to the OPs thread, in which they seem to be confused as to why the girl would be considered a victim.

Ok, one last time very slowly. She didn't "deserve" anything. She simply got the eminently predictable response. Its not shocking that this happened. It was the expected outcome.

doesn't make her any less of a victim of a bullying / shaming campaign in the situation.

This makes me think you are not reading my responses or, again, have really poor comprehension. She is a victim...just not a sympathetic one.

Your belief that she deserves less sympathy or is somehow less of a victim because you think organised bullying and shaming campaign is the obvious response is irrelevant. It doesn't make her any more or less the victim of a cruel bullying and shaming campaign.

Yes, she is a victim of bullying. I'd be curious to know how truly delighted the male party was with having his activities plastered all over the internet. Of course that's inconsequential since he's been arbitrarily deemed the "hero/villain" in this case, because he has a dick - certainly no victimization for him. We won't look into that any further because this entire incident has been summarily framed.

There is something that doesn't add up here. A young girl, who is apparently comfortable enough with her sexuality to perform public sex acts, and who is obviously an exhibitionist - is suddenly hyper-sensitive and vulnerable to public judgment and criticism? No? Yes?

I don't endorse slut shaming or whatever the hell they're calling it at this particular moment, but how exactly do we know that this girl bears the full and sole brunt of public judgment and criticism? Because the media characterized it that way? Because she's the one who sought medical treatment for embarassment and harrassment? Because the photograph portrays the "nameless" dude holding his arms up in a triumphant manner and that's all the context needed to stir the passions of sympathy for the named (and thereby humanized) "victim" in this case. Because the dude is a dude, and the girl is the "Slane" girl?

If you don't believe she deserved it in some way, how do you figure she deserves less sympathy?

[–]pocketknifeMT 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

sympathy is greater for the truely random and unfortunate.

Take the Tiger example. If you are on a photo safari and a tiger mauls you without warning, etc everyone is going to be naturally sympathetic. "That could've been me, and I wouldn't of been able to do anything about it!" people think.

Jumping into the Tiger pit at the zoo on purpose though garners next to no sympathy. "This couldn't happen accidentally, and I certainly wouldn't of made the same decisions, and neither would any other rational person." people think.

Sympathy begins with Empathy, and situation is going to greatly affect this.

Most humans, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or creed, tend to be fairly stupid. It is not so that this forum's intelligence has increased or decreased, but, more so that your preconceptions about this particular place, in relation to places you inhabited before coming here, has had time to fade away.

I've been here since near the beginning and been in the movement itself longer than this place has been around. I've seen this forum through various phases.
