It's encouraging to see a women's abuse organization speak out for men.

"Violence is a serious topic. As women, as mothers, we have the duty and the responsibility to educate our sons and daughters, that's to say, the Future Generation, in the light of the values of dialogue, respect and compassion between men and women, without any gender distinction, in order to prevent violence with the weapons of love and education.

"MISSION NGO women from all over the world stand against domestic violence, regardless of gender, age or race. Our mission is to educate men and women, with no gender differences, to keep talking and living in the values of love, mutual comprehension and sensitivity in order to prevent all kinds of violence, against women against men, against children."

I hope that this case will spark a wider debate about men as DV victims. Is the tide turning?

[–]Embarrassed-Tune9038 32 points33 points34 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It isn't about the Gender. It is about the individual. How they were raised, their experience, their situation and whatever mental health issues or personality disorders they have.

This, more than gender, determines actions.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate[S] 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Absolutely. But tell that to the feminist organizations, lobbyists, and politicians who have made it about gender.

[–]Embarrassed-Tune9038 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fight the faith and orthodoxy with facts.

[–]Aimless-Nomad 54 points55 points56 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Nah i don't think so. The feminists tried damage control by churning article after article on how she really was the victim but nobody were buying it. Both men and women can see through Amber's bullshit. Now they just want throw Amber like a scapegoat or like a bone to hungry dogs allowing the main problem to never be addressed.

Same thing with George Floyd. Arrest that one cop instead of addressing the police system as a whole.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate[S] 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Changing the system is usually a rather difficult and lengthy process. But there certainly is more awareness about the issues now. I'd think that is a step forward.

Changing the system is usually a rather difficult and lengthy process.

How do you eat a horse? One bite at a time

How do you change a system? One awareness at a time.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate[S] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

My point exactly.

[–]Aimless-Nomad 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I gave up honestly. Its been the good part of two decades of people trying to bring awareness to this to no effect.

[–]a-man-from-earthleft-wing male advocate[S] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We just keep raising awareness and lobbying for fair laws.

And a major mainstream publication like Newsweek giving attention to male victims of DV is a win in my book. The fight ain't over. But this is now an issue that people can no longer ignore or deny.

[–]Aimless-Nomad 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps

[–]helloiseeyou2020 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm honestly shocked at what I am reading and I mean that in the best possible way. I sincerely didn't think I would live to read words like that from such an organization.

This is such an eloquent and inclusive message, and we should all try our best to amplify it.

[–]Ornery-Surround3491 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"In deep respect of the victims of domestic abuses that we have to affirm for intellectual honesty are, generally, WOMEN, we feel to express, as women, as mothers, as free thinkers, our compassion for Johnny Depp in this bad page of his personal history."

Still had to slip that in, I see, despite all the pesky evidence to the contrary.

[–]TisIChenoir 48 points49 points50 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You know what bothers me? If a man is harassed by his wife. She is consistently insulting him, diminishing him, destroying his self-confidence, isolating him from his friends and family, telling him that he is worthless, that he is not a man. Stuff we can easily imagine happening.

If, after years of abuse, that man snaps and slap her? He is the abuser, she gets to be seen as the victim.

If he takes his own life out of desperation? Well, then he's just another statistic.

Now, I'm not excusing beating your wife for any kind of reason. But I'd really like to see those factored into domestic abuse statistics. How many men end up beating their spouses due to reaching a breaking point? And how many of the overwhelming majority of suicide victims that are men, did it because they reached said breaking point.

[–]Oncefa2left-wing male advocate 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's research showing that the biggest predictor of male violence against women is whether or not a woman is violent towards men.

This is a little different than what you're talking about but these types of findings are published and talked about. Usually with a bit of care to avoid victim blaming and to try to placate feminists. But facts are facts and I think stuff like this will always be obvious to anyone with an open mind who thinks critically about this stuff.

Consequently, a fourth argument for acknowledging and addressing the abuse of men by women is that it will ultimately work to end the abuse of women by men. Put in blunt utilitarian terms, female violence must be addressed in order to protect women as a man provoked by a violent female has the potential to inflict greater injury.95

This argument is somewhat controversial because the demand for self-control is placed solely on the female and seems tantamount to victim-blaming.96 Such an objection may legitimately refute any argument raised to look at female violence in order to protect women. However, this type of controversy does not prevent recognizing the effect of husband-beating on children. Regardless of the gender of the child or the violent parent, children who witness the violence of one parent on another are more likely to be violent in their adult relationships.97 These findings therefore provide the basis for a fifth reason for supporting a gender-neutral effort to address spousal violence... Acknowledging female violence arguably not only will protect men, but it will ultimately work to protect women and children.

[–]SpicyMarshmellow 25 points26 points27 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course. The majority of abuse victims are women. Nevermind that the very core of this case is a demonstration of how society sees women as the victim in domestic conflict by default, and one of the richest, most beloved cultural icons in the world still has to provide overwhelming evidence and go through years of shit to prove otherwise. But yeah. We're still supposed to just blindly believe that there couldn't possibly be anything wrong with the stats.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Especially given that in another TinMan post, it linked statistics which show that in 70% of non-reciprocal abuse relationships, women were actually the aggressor

[–]TheLWMA 71 points72 points73 points 4 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

I guarantee that in the next few years, feminists are going to use this trial as an example of "the patriarchy not caring about male victims".

They'll downplay the amount of support that Heard had from feminists. They'll claim "the feminists who supported Amber Heard were not real feminists".

Just watch.

[–]DekajaSukunda 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Did you read the verdict for his British case? Feminism was the entire reason he lost that case. Look, defamation is hard to win, idk if Johnny deserved to win that. But that judge was obviously a feminist who took the "believe women" slogan very at heart.

The judge would literally admit there was zero evidence of an incident occuring but then accept it anyway based on nothing but Amber's word.

[–]TheLWMA 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

What I'm saying is that feminists are suddenly going to change their view. If you ever read 1984, it'll be similar to how The Party seemingly goes from being at war with Eurasia to being at war with Eastasia.

"Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia."

"Feminists have always supported Johnny Depp."

[–]DekajaSukunda 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

For all they complain about society invisibilizing women, feminists do a lot to invisibilize themselves.

I can imagine there's some feminists that are pro-Johnny... But I can guarantee you every pro-Amber space you'll find is very, very evidently feminist.

[–]TheLWMA 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that FDS was pro-Amber until it went private. I've also seen some pro-Amber sentiment in places like TwoX.

[–]DekajaSukunda 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most celeb gossip blogs I know are pro-Amber and very feminist.

[–]Mirisme 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

Just watch.

Do you think there's another option than watching things unfold?

My view is that I try to have discussions that further an actionable discourse so I find watching other people narratives isn't that useful as long as they accept to write one with me that we find acceptable.

[–]TheLWMA 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

I mean it in a "mark my words" kind of way.

Feminists rode the "believe all women" wave to its natural conclusion. But now that supporting Amber Heard is a very unpopular position, they'll try to do damage control.

[–]Mirisme 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Wouldn't that damage control be an opportunity to get what we want tho? Feminist might be forced to open up their discourse to at least pay lip service to leftist men's discourse and that might be an opportunity to find common ground against reactionaries and traditionalists.

[–]Punder_man 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Given the history of how feminists work... that's not going to happen.
They will go into full on damage control with phrases like "Yes, Amber Heard was an abuser, but the majority of abuse still comes from men"

In this way they can claim they 'owned up to it' but at the same time they still spin the narrative in the direction they want.

You know, just like they did when UK MP Layla Moran tweated that she had slapped her at the time current partner.

Or when #Metoo Leader Asia Argento One of the people who accused Harvey Weinsten of Sexual Assault was busy paying money to 17 year old Jimmy Bennett whom she slept with.

In both cases feminists did not accept these as examples of women being equally guilty of the heinous crimes of which they routinely accuse men of but fought tooth and nail to downplay both examples as being 'minor' or 'taken out of context'

So, just like in the examples above, feminists wont be receptive to opening up to the idea that yes, men can be victims too! they will instead do everything they can to deny this and spin the narrative back on track of "Women being the victims"

[–]DekajaSukunda 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've spent enough time in feminist circles to assert this, this is one of their main hipocrisies.

When something bad happens to a woman, it's because of misogyny. Always. Feminists claim that misogyny is pervasive in society and omnipresent in every facet of life. Women are oppressed by men by simply going out to the streets. But when you call them out on this, you're exaggerating. It's nuanced.

When something bad happens to men, it's mere happenstance, or it's because of patriarchy. Male privilege is pervasive in society and despite the seemingly many instances of it not accounting to anything, that's just exceptional.

[–]Mirisme 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If I agree with you that it's impossible to discuss with feminist, what would you propose I do in place of trying to engage in discussions with feminists? That's my main concern.

I had discussion with people were I reached a mutual understanding, even feminist. I have, of course, plenty of discussions that did not reach such mutual understanding but I have yet to see another course of action that I find agreeable.

[–]Punder_man 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I wish I had the answer but from my own experience trying to discuss this subject with feminists is like trying to knock down a wall using only your words.

You are welcome to try all you like but don't be surprised when said discussions turn into "Yes, that's bad but women still have it worse" or "Those examples are outliers and not representative of the 'true' picture"

Or any other excuse they can come up with to dismiss the actions of women like Amber Heard, Layla Moran or Asia Argento..

It doesn't even matter how much you agree with them, they refuse to acknowledge that men can equally be victims of women because feminist dogma has brainwashed them into the black and white view of "Men are the victimizers, women are the victims"

In my experience, even if you do your best to 'find common ground' you will at most expose a flimsy layer of shale which will quickly crack, then break and your discussion will devolve into the usual accusations of downplaying the harm done to women or they will simply say that they don't have to listen to anything a filthy misogynist has to say before storming off.

At least, that's been my experience..
As I said feel free to try but don't expect to get much if any success...

[–]Mirisme 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not expecting much, especially online, it tends to reinforce the cultural bad habits of discussion. My goal is more to experiment with different discussions parameters to see how I can allow for a discussion to happen than focusing on the content I want to discuss first.

I have observed that there's so much assumption of bad faith that it becomes practically impossible to discuss without addressing that first. The issue is that while I'm open to compromise, I don't want to compromise my perspective, this is hard to do.

I do understand being jaded to discussion but as a leftist, I see no other fully valid tool for praxis.

My analysis of your position is that you're in a safe space that allows you to heal from the violence you have been subjected to, in that space, you aim to share your perspective with people you expect not to hurt you when you do. Would that be accurate? I'm trying to understand the dynamic you seem to embody but I'm unsure my analysis maps to your lived experience.

[–]Punder_man 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Would that be accurate? I'm trying to understand the dynamic you seem to embody but I'm unsure my analysis maps to your lived experience.

As far as things go your analysis is fairly accurateAnd yes, I would describe myself as being jaded when it comes to discussing anything with feminists. Not getting to heavily into it but from the ages of 5 - 18 I was abused (Physically, Emotionally and Psychologically) by a number of women. Especially women who were in positions that gave them power over me.

What hurts the most for me as a survivor of violence from women is hearing feminists downplay my experience because of my gender. Because i'm a man the pain, humiliation and suffering i endured is considered to be less important or relevant to that of what women go through.

Despite all of this I do not hate women as I know that it wasn't some sort of conspiracy organized by a cabal of women to specifically target me. But I still do lament the fact that NONE of my abusers did or ever will face any sort of justice for the harm they inflicted on me.

As a relevant example here, I was embroiled in an argument with feminists over the use of #KillAllMen Where in they were trying to defend its origin / use as 'satire' or 'a joke'
Yet when I and other men spoke up and said "As victims of violence from women we find that hashtag to be triggering to us' we were brushed aside and essentially told that our suffering does not matter. Or that it was only a small 'minority of trolls' who were using that hashtag.
But instead of doing the right thing in agreeing that the hashtag is problematic and agreeing that people who use it should be called out they instead fought tooth and nail to defend its use.

These are the same feminists who will also fight against dropping the term 'Toxic Masculinity' for something more neutral like 'Toxic Gender Roles / Norms' because to them its "Not as effective a term"
I am just tired of having my attempts to bring to light the fact that the male lived experience is more nuanced than feminists have been led to believe fail because the moment you so much as question the dogmatic beliefs of feminism you highlight yourself as 'the enemy' and thus they must resort to shutting down the conversation and / or ensuring the narrative that feminism has proposed remains intact.

Over time this will make anyone jaded.

[–]Mirisme 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Especially women who were in positions that gave them power over me.

I'm not surprised at that. There's a tendency in feminist space to discount experience if they're not framed in the correct vocabulary, it's particularly visible in feminist space as it's contradictory with its stated goals. A damning example I came across was in an article a testimony of an individual who witnessed a feminist space devoted to helping single mother in distress rebuke a single mother in distress because she did not use the prescribed vocabulary concerning gender (it's in a french context so it was about using specific punctuation/word ending to signal inclusion which is used in feminist circles).

In your case, it's even easier since feminism do not develop a narrative for women abuser and signifying a woman abuser is in itself outside the feminist vocabulary or common narrative.

What hurts the most for me as a survivor of violence from women is hearing feminists downplay my experience because of my gender. Because i'm a man the pain, humiliation and suffering i endured is considered to be less important or relevant to that of what women go through.

Having your own perspective directly negated that way has to hurt like hell. I'd wager it's borderline retraumatising as the situation can very well symbolise the abuse you suffered through.

Well I'm sure I'd be jaded were I in your situation, that I can agree with. As I still am not jaded, I'll still try to discuss with feminist in the hope I can reach an understanding with them that could include narrative like yours and mine. However my situation is much less threatening to the feminist status quo as the catalyst of my questioning the status quo stems from the suicide of my father that resulted from his inability to be monetarily successful as he told me himself. I do believe feminist are the social group that has the best potential to be allies in upturning that status quo even if it's obvious that alliance isn't currently existing and would need a lot of work to exist in any capacity. I'm however hopeful because the news that started this thread allude to that possibility.

[–]excess_inquisitivity 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. This was in their note of support:

"In deep respect of the victims of domestic abuses that we have to affirm for intellectual honesty are, generally, WOMEN, we feel to express, as women, as mothers, as free thinkers, our compassion for Johnny Depp in this bad page of his personal history."

[–]MelissaMiranti 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Or when

#Metoo Leader Asia Argento

One of the people who accused Harvey Weinsten of Sexual Assault was busy paying money to 17 year old Jimmy Bennett whom she slept with.

I also believe that it was her that drove Anthony Bourdain to suicide.

[–]Punder_man 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't want to mention it because its only conjecture but yes.. this could very well be the case...

[–]MelissaMiranti 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She showed the world she was cheating on him openly the day (or day before, time zones) that he killed himself.

[–]TheLWMA 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Sure. But feminists will only acknowledge their view on male victims.

As in, they'll say that patriarchy and toxic masculinity are the reasons why male victims aren't believed.

[–]Mirisme 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

If you believe that discussion is impossible, how do you envision we should act? I do believe that discussion is possible so I'll try but I'm curious about how you'll proceed from that point on. I worry that you might be trapped in a self defeating process. You proposed to just watch and said that discourse is impossible, your view is assured to be unheard with those expectations. Not that there's any guarantee that your view will be heard if you discuss it tho, it might be instantly shutdown as anything suspect often is in feminist circles so I understand where you're coming from.

[–]TheLWMA 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I am admittedly being cynical. I once believe that MRAs and feminists could have a common understanding, but unfortunately I was incorrect in that assumption. I've learned that no matter how hard you try, you cannot convince feminists that concepts such as toxic masculinity and patriarchy are flawed or that men suffer from misandry.

[–]Mirisme 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I once believe that MRAs and feminists could have a common understanding, but unfortunately I was incorrect in that assumption.

You seem to assume that it's a fixed truth of the universe. I get that people can be very opposed to discussion but some are open to it and that can change the average discourse. Feminism is a good example of such actions but you could say that capitalism had such an effect against the discourse of aristocracy.

Do you think it's an universal truth or do you wish not to take further risks as you were hurt plenty? (or any other possibilities, that's the one I can think of right now)

[–]TheLWMA 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Debating feminists would be fine if they and MRAs were on equal ground and power.

Until then....

[–]Mirisme 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What would constitute equal ground and power to you? And how do you wish to achieve that?

Also, I'm not planning to debate anyone, I'm planning to discuss.

[–]Talik1978 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They commented that Mission NGO are "heroes" for finally standing up for Depp

I don't know. This case is so blatantly clear that supporting Depp as an abuse victim isn't a "hero" take. It's a "decent human being" take.

So I guess congratulations to Mission NGO for being one of the first abuse advocacy groups to graduate to acknowledging half the population as potential victims. Congratulations for doing what should have been done for the last 50 years.

[–]excess_inquisitivity 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

"In deep respect of the victims of domestic abuses that we have to affirm for intellectual honesty are, generally, WOMEN, we feel to express, as women, as mothers, as free thinkers, our compassion for Johnny Depp in this bad page of his personal history."

Had to get that bigotry in there.

"We grudgingly admit that sometimes women are wrong."

Well, it's a start. I'll take it as a sign of progress.

It's a start in the same way "feminism helps men too" is a start: It's a meaningless statement that holds little to no weight and is only said to make themselves look like actual egalitarians. They just had to re-assure the reader that they aren't making the "horrendous" claim that men can and are also frequent victims of domestic abuse.

Nope. It's the shit in the sandwich. It's a reminder to the press to stay on message: women, not men, are worthy of being called victims.

Herd may lose status, but feminism will not. She's an outsider now, no true feminist.

This reads a lot like a publicity grab. The released statement is anti-male, as well as their stated goals.

MISSION NGO, a nonprofit international organization supporting women and children from physical, sexual, and psychological abuse

"In deep respect of the victims of domestic abuses that we have to affirm for intellectual honesty are, generally, WOMEN,

Some people have apparently congratulated them for this statement. I'd say well done Johnny for being so visible that it's forced organisations that previously wouldn't give men the time of day to actually come out and admit that men can be abused.

The founder appears to be a friend of Depp's and doesn't appear to have done much - no activism and no lobbying, no charity fund raising, no awareness campaigns, nothing. Just plans for a music video.

Here's the founder pictured with Depp https://i.pinimg.com/236x/bb/4f/7d/bb4f7d7ba24b3c9db02af36685b51179.jpg

Here's the website: http://www.mission-ngo.org/im-standing-with-you/

An interesting gender ratio of the controlling board and contributing members seem to be just beauty queens. One might think this is a vanity project and not a genuine charity or abuse organisation. I went to the donate button but it leads to a broken link with a list of links that lead to incomplete site template pages. Amazing.

Perhaps hold back the applause.

Yeah, this seems like it has more to do with virtual signaling and the founder's personal relationship with Johnny deep then actual support for Johnny deep and male victims in general from this organization. In the statement they made towards johnny deep they seemed to be supporting men who are victims, but on their website they only mention support for women and children. This does not seem genuine.

In other words, they watched the cross examination and the obvious truth right before their eyes.. But still, good for them for going against the woke mafia, they're going to get a ton of grief from their peers.

Not impressed, I can virtue signal too, and better than this

Someone should make a list of all feminist or women's organizations, and well-known feminists and how they excused DV against Depp.
