So my soon to be ex wife and I have been separated since fall 2020 after she asked me to move out. mid- covid she went on a month long road trip paid for by our stimulus check which I gave her because she was not working. Since then she has managed to max out 4 credit cards and bought a brand new jeep cherokee. She got in an accident last month and cannot afford the repair costs. She cannot afford the insurance which i have been paying and now cannot afford the car payments. In the past 3 months she has "borrowed" money from me 3 times, once was a draw on our heloc. She is a photographer and works on a contract basis with various companies and has an airbnb which should cover her rent except for Jan, Feb, and part of March. She has 0 savings and no health ins.

I have full time employment with full benefits and significant savings and retirement.

I feel like I would be obligated to some sort of spousal support in a divorce and have consequently chosen to stay separated and help her with "loans" until she can get on her feet. I am very concerned at her amount if debt which she had not disclosed to me until recently am hesistant to loan her more money. She recently asked me to apply for a low interest credit card so she can consolidate her debts.

I am also afraid she may lawyer up and go after me for all I have and suck up additional money in attorney fees.

I want her to be financially sound be fore we proceed into divorce and I do not want to see her suffer under crippling debt, but to what extent are my financial responsibilities here? I need to protect my assets and savings and house and why should I be paying for her gross financial negligence?

Open to thoughts. I have consulted a lawyer, but just wanna throw this out there for discussion. Thanks.
