Do you feel it's healthier for some one to have "A type" or is it more healthy to be attracted to cultural standards of attractiveness?

I don't think either is more healthy, but liking a type that isn't universally regarded as attractive makes it a lot easier to date

I don't think having a type by itself has an effect on mental health. Being able to obtain your type or not is probably the driver.

If you can't find someone beyond your type attractive, then you're going to have a harder time. And if who you're into type-wise isn't into you, you're gonna have a bad time. Basically, the more stringent and inflexible you are, the harder it will be to get a happy match.

Adaptability is pretty big in dating. Not the strongest or the fastest that survives, but those most able to adapt to change.

Its only unhealthy if the type they are stuck on causes them pain somehow. I'm pretty sure my having a type for guys with longer hair has never caused anyone pain... unless they steal my hair tires.

I don't think either is inherently more or less healthy. Both can be unhealthy if they come from a bad place (insecurity, seeking social approval, fetishization/objectification, obsession, idealization), but both can also be perfectly healthy and normal.

I think it's very healthy to be more flexible when it comes to physical attractiveness cause if you have just one single type and only one (like most women do) then you will never find that someone.

I don't think having a type is such a rigid construct, people fall for people outside of their type all the time. I'm not sure how that would affect your mental health either. Now being an unattractive nobody and holding out for a celebrity (fe)male supermodel type of partner is pure delusion and sign of mental illness in itself.

You should date the best of the people that gravitate towards you.

If you don't like the type you're attracting, then you need to change yourself.

The pivotal factor to this is outcomes. It’s okay to desire a type. Or a cultural standard. Is that outcome however a reasonably attainable expectation, based on one own’s status? In context to mental health, that’s what matters.

Having a "type" usually just refers to the initial attraction, so it's relatively shallow factors like being thin or having long hair.

In the longer term, other factors would be more dominant. For example, if thinness is important to you, healthy attitudes towards eating and exercise is more predictive than current thinness.

More than anything, I think a common outlook and philosophy of life is what I look for in a potential partner. I'm not sure how that fits in your categories.

I have a type, but they seem rare in real life. I like dark-haired women. Quirky. Teacher-types. Almost like New Girl, but not quite Manic-Pixie Dream Girl. I'm not into blondes. I don't get the Asian fetish.

Why even analyse it?

If someone makes you think "Hmmm. They're pretty." or "Hmmm. Hes a hunk." then go with that.

The last thing you want is to lay your preferences down before the altar of public opinion, or worse, the altar of woke, to find out how wrong you are to have those specific preferences, or just preferences at all. Invariably, today, what you get is:

"I like vanilla iced cream."

"So what you're saying is, you're uncomfortable with diversity."

I used to find Asian women very attractive for some reason. They just looked, on average, prettier to me than other woman. I do prefer smaller women, and never was into "hourglass shapes" or big butts, or big boobs.

Now, that preference has waned quite a bit.

I do find I find far more non-white women attractive than white women. Darker hair, darker skin, and big, dark eyes - for some reason - catch my eye more. And the "blue-eyed-blonde" thing many guys swoon about is lost on me.

But as a person who is practically asexual, none of this really matters anyways.

But my "Oh, she's attractive" program still runs. It's the "do something about it" algorithm that is gone.
