The most loving relationships I see exist where both partners see each other as the prize and hold each other up to standards of excellence where they impress each other. Seeing your partner as a superior to be served all the time without reciprocation may seem nice at first but generally leads to insecurity and resentment. Also, you generally stop seeing them as superior if they don't even act as caring towards you as you do towards them.

or...when people love each other they're inspired to generosity, they desire to care for one another, and they tend to be aroused by their love interest. those are generally all natural extensions of romantic and sexual attraction more than stratagems for 'winning' the object of one's affections (barring e.g. lovebombing).

we do tend to want to make a good impression, but often focus on the quality and specificity of gifts, sex, etc-- it's not that we decide to give or make love, in and of itself, to impress, but that we're nigh impelled to and make a conscious effort to do well at it.

similarly, as someone else said-- successful relationships often have each partner rating the other more highly than their self and desiring to put forth the greater amount of effort.

I think you raise an interesting point. I wouldn’t say I think my husband is more attractive than me, but I find him very attractive (and generally high value), and I like to do what I can to keep him feeling cared for and satisfied. So yes, I definitely see him as a prize but I prize that I won and get to hold on to fair and square.

But that’s the whole point of love right? You get to be eachother’s prizes

she’ll probably be willing to do a lot, but if you don’t in her eyes do the same for her, she’ll eventually grow resentful and either leave you or get get toxic. you can’t just take advantage of that willingness forever without reciprocation.

Hmm, I did notice my ex wife at the start of the relationship constantly talked about how much better looking I was than her, and did go out of her way to try and impress me, so I guess it holds up?
