I recently did that, i asked her if she went to [insert high school], because i recognized her face. It allowed me to talk to her more at work, as long as you seem sincere i don't think it's creepy.

agree with whoever said that it's only creepy if the girl gets creeped out. otherwise, i'd say it's creepy if you blindside them with it. not creepy if there's been ioi eye contact/smiles/etc.

if it's the only opener you have with a girl, use it. if you find yourself getting weird looks more often than not, think about trying something else.

As long as it's clear from context that you just spotted her and decided to come up because you recognized her, as opposed to follow her to say it, then I don't see what's creepy about it.

On the other hand, if you give her reason to think that you followed her or that it's otherwise not just a chance encounter, then, yeah, creepy as hell.

We had the neighbours daughter stay with us for a few hours Saturday night because the electricity went and she was freaked out as hell as a result of some guy the night before having followed her from town, onto the bus and gotten off with her, and then opened her by telling her that he did so because he thought she was cute... That is what creepy looks like.

If you want to mitigate any risk of her misunderstanding, make sure your reason for being where you open her and/or for being where you recognize her from is clear.

E.g. for example "Hey, do you go to (school name)? I think I saw you there when I was hanging around there waiting for some friends the other day".

You only come off creepy if you use it to masquerade the fact that you just want to talk to her.

Hell, my most used opener is just "sup", smile, followed by an innocuous comment.

It could be creepy, just depends on the context.

Very creepy: "Hi, have I seen you before?" Moderate creepy: "Hi, you go to X school right?" Less creepy: "Hi, you go to X school and are in Y course right?"

Not creepy: "Hi, I saw you in Professor Z's course, just wanted to come up to you and say hi. I'm (legallyunderage)." And then launch into a conversation from there.

disregard your friends. If you were an afc, and they are afc's, you're on the cusp of breaking thru and changing your personality, this - they find very threatening on a very deep subconscious level. Humans seek status quo.

EDIT: furthermore - commit to doing some creepy things. You're not fulfilling your potential unless you're pushing boundaries.

I wish I had the memory for faces. A friend of mine who does very well for himself uses this as a opener if he recognizes a girl at the bar. Why the hell would it be creepy to recognize someone and comment on it? I mean, it might be creepy if it was more like, "Hey, I've seen you on campus before, don't you go to [school name], major in English, take these classes, and always leave your polka-dotted panties to air dry in the laundry room?"

Doesn't strike me as particularly creepy. Of course every girl's threshold for what she considers "creepy" is different, but you could do worse. You can always open with something else though, then go "hey, wait a minute <sideways look> ... oh yeah, you go to <school name> right? I've seen you around before," blah, blah.

Another point to consider... a little bit creepy isn't necessarily bad. 60 Years of Challenge talks a lot about how you sometimes have to risk "creepy." Read his stuff, it's gold.

I think you could pull it off if you do it casually and confidently enough. Be aware, however, that pulling off day game usually requires a false time constraint. If you don't let the girl know that you're not trapping her, she'll act like an animal backed into a corner and be creeped the hell out. Learned that lesson the awkward way.

Chances are, if you recognize her face she will recognize your face. I had a similar incident but I didn't want to mention why her face seemed familiar for the same reasons. Ultimately she brought up the familiarity anyways (she thought I looked familiar) and we segued into a related conversation.

Ignore your friends, what do they know unless they are getting tail.

It's not creepy, but it's an obvious tell that you are hitting on her. I would not use "Don't I know you from somewhere" etc. as an opener in most situations - start out with something else and use it to follow up. Those type of lines like "You look familiar" are abused by other guys just to start conversations so it raises her alert level.
