I've learned a good trick for when you're taking a number from a girl and figuring out if its fake or not. After you put it in your phone, repeat the number to her, except say one or two numbers incorrectly.

If she corrects you, it's her real number. However, if she doesn't correct you, then she's given you a fake number.

I don't know about others but my girlfriend gives out her old number to guys who try to hit on her cause shes non-confrontational and feels vulnerable, kinda doesn't help when dudes literally sit next to her in the subway, take her earphones off and chatterbox her trying to get a date.

FWIW, when a girl gives you a fake number, its because she's not interested and trying to avoid you being unpleasant when she says she wants nothing to do with you.

I don't know why girls think they are so clever by giving out a fake.

This is hiding another issue, though. You shouldn't have to deal with this, really. I mean, it's cool to have a trick to reveal if the girl is giving a fake number, but it's not as efficient because it's reactionary, as opposed to preventative action. If you are doing what you need to in order to connect with a girl, you can preempt most or all of this fake number stuff because she'll give her real number and show obvious enthusiasm to see you again.

Plus, don't just get or give a number, whenever possible. Always number exchange. Get or give the number and then make sure you call them on the spot or direct them to call you if it's going into their phone. Then help them to create a new contact for the missed call.

Helpful hint for the future when a girl gives you her number repeat it back to her changing 1 or 2 digits if she agrees that it is the right number just walk away and save yourself the wasted energy.

When it's time to ask for the number, I always say "do you have a cellphone?" with my hands out. Then when they give me their phone I call my number with it and save the number off the caller id.

This works for me, but I usually build enough rapport first before asking.

The mistake is on your part. I only ask for number when I know there is a good chance for it working out. But to get there I had to collect lots of nonsense numbers. So keep going, just dont blame it on her.

If you are getting fake numbers you are doing something wrong... I've never gotten a fake number in my life, and I always get confused when guys tell me they have. If she is interested even a little bit and not involved most girls will at least give you a shot...

Next time when you grab her number, don't run off. Keep talking and test the number, it gets mad awkward if it's fake ;)

Just call it real quick, and if her phone doesn't do anything, ask her for her phone, then text your phone. If she says it's in her car or something, chances are she's not into you enough to get together, don't get attached, just find another girl more intro you.

It's actually pretty easy to spot a fake number. Just check her whatsapp profile picture. If she doesn't have whatsapp or the photo isn't her, it's fake.

Edit: Apparently you Americans don't use it so much. Everyone uses it where I live, and almost everywhere else in Europe.
