Edit: My mum is actually a driving instructor, and the stories she tells me puts me off the idea of teaching someone how to drive.

9 – Teach Her to Drive Stick

I did this once. She ended up crashing my car into the only other car that was in this big open area. The other car was also parked and had people sitting in it. Up until then it was pretty fun and definitely a more memorable date.

My poor car had to get resprayed on the side and had some damage to the wheel alignment as well as a huge dent :'(.

#3 - Exploring

^So much this. If you're in a large city, just walking around and exploring is the ultimate cheap date, IMO. (Though, I guess that's not exactly what the article's author had in mind, considering he talks about bringing a flashlight and map.)

I live in NYC, and during good weather, we just walk around and chat. Eventually we get food/coffee/whatever if we feel like it. Or to my place depending on how it went. :)

Walking beside the girl creates a large number of opportunities for playful touching. And moving around and seeing new things is mentally stimulating, which helps come up with new topics of discussion, and generally makes the date exciting. I find it's much harder to be entertaining and fun when I'm trapped in a restaurant interview-style.

I feel like most of these are actually pretty lame and standard.

Some ones I can also think of: Going to a big furniture store just to sit on a huge comfy couch and talk. Plenty of things to talk about when at a furniture store. Don't buy anything.

Go to abandoned factory.

Walk across train track bridge (scary)

Go on a random historic house tour.

Go to trade show.

My style is more for the memorable aspect rather than "romantic". Both of you are like WTF are we doing at an antique radio trade show but you'll remember it forever.

Good post. I could argue that all your dates should be cheap, since expensive places tend to put too much pressure on her and might make you look too try-hard.

Not to say this article doesn't imply it anyway but as a guy I always appreciate it if the girl pays/offers to pay for a date. We all work and have our own money, it shouldn't only be one side who always reaches into their wallet/purse.

Typically you'd think this subreddit would be much more focussed on the first few dates, not relationship activities. Which, at least for me, don't seem like the sort of thing you need to get creative with unless you're under 21..

Want to have a classy first date? Grab a couple drinks at a nice bar, or a decent looking restaurant's bar.

Want to have a normal first date? Grab a couple drinks at an ordinary bar.

Opposed to alcohol? Grab coffee.. I think I did this once or twice. IMO coffee dates are kind of a red flag for me. It just seems somewhere between extraordinarily dull and extraordinarily uptight.

When I first started dating the woman who is now my wife, she was working at a spa. She didn't know when she would be able to leave work on valentine's day so I planned a picnic at a local park that doesn't close until 11pm. At the park I made filet mignon on the charcoal grill and various yummy things along with wine and some dessert. It saved me a fortune as well as headaches getting reservations. We do this every year now. Inexpensive dates don't have to be cheap.

Lol at the teaching her how to drive a stick part. I've offered my gf sooo many times to teach her to drive a stick, you know so she cab drive my car in a pinch, but noooooooo she won't go for it. She told me she has absolutely no interest in learning and she's confused as to why I drive a stick. She doesn't get it. And in all of my experience I've met all of one girl who was interested in learning to drive stick (she was a friend and asked me to teach her). The learning to drive stick as a "date" is so bad. Not to mention the possibilities of damaging your transmission, wearing out your clutch, and grinding your gears would probably press this into a no longer "cheap" date.

My gf and I will have indoor picnics in the living room which is perfect for reading days. We'll break out a bottle of wine, the nice flatware and plates, wine glasses, tealights (putting a dozen of them in a transparent glass bowl for that improvised, spontaneous shabby chic feel). Everything goes on top of a nice traditional red gingham patterned cloth (you can get two yards for cheap at IKEA or a fabric store).

To make things easier, we'll order takeout from a decent restaurant like the Cheesecake Factory so no one has to cook (I'll end up doing the dishes of course),

Then after a few glasses of wine, a little sexy time in the living room bathed in the flickering candlelight. We've done this for Valentine's Day and it's been a hit. Who wants to deal with the crowds and nonsense anyway?
