Whenever you dig into the numbers of people claiming there's a pay gap, what they're looking at is the total earnings of all men versus the total earnings of all women (for a given country). Then they infer men are earning more than women for the same job & years experience which simply isn't the case and has been illegal in the US since 1963 (if I remember right).

There was a study into what young men and women considered when choosing a career. The top three considerations were the same for both - pay, how interested they were in the work, and making a difference in the world. The difference was men put more emphasis on careers that paid more (and the demand vs supply for that degree). If young women wanted to, they could go that route too, but it's their choice to get a bachelor's in an oversaturated major like psychology.

Women recently passed men as well (for the subset of the population that recently finished college and started their careers) in the US and are actually earning more now, mostly due to 2/3rds of college degrees being earned by women now. So if that trend continues, men aren't going to out earn women for much longer (once the current older generations in the workforce retire.)

There might actually be a pay gap in the fashion industry. Female models in general earn more than male models.

Tho Im not sure if its a skill issue or hours of work issue? I dont know. So for now I'll refrain from creating baseless conclusions. But its an area worth looking deeper into.

(Or maybe someone from fashion industry can correct me since I'm also curious on the actual number)

I've had plenty of jobs (mostly IT industry) where I've managed men and woman alike. The pay has always been the same and/or based on experience regardless of gender. "The GAP" in fields I'm familiar with don't exist from my perspective.

In most of the modern world it does not exist as a result of discrimination. There's just no data to support that and basically no economists argue that being born female is a curse to make less money. Once you control for variables like experience, job negotiations, field of work, etc these things go away.

Most of the talk about this issue is around the very much oversimplified math of averaging all women in say, the USA and all Men. Then they just point out the average for men is higher.

But it doesn't make any sense to believe this because labor is almost always the most expensive part of a business, by a lot. If it were true that you could pay women x% less for a job, every business would want this. It would be a huge savings.

Other things from my memory, but please find good sources if you need details:

Women are less likely to pursue the highest earning and high risk jobs like entrepreneur or CEO. So the average is all skewed, although I'd say the median is what matters to eliminate those tail ends.

Women are much more likely to stop career pursuits for family. Men are expected to increase income, if anything.

Men have been more likely to go into stem jobs which have had the high surge in value in recent decades.

Some of these things are changing as demographics change and family goals change, and so on. But I think there is a valid point that it is difficult to start a family and that is a drain on anyone. The problem is that nobody really cares if it's a man. If we're going to take single parenthood seriously, or just the strain a child brings to a double parent home, there's no reason to bring up the sex of anyone involved, in the laws or in the outrage people express over social issues.

The BLS is actually very tactful in what the “gender pay gap”. is and us not. It’s a measure of what men earn on average compared to women. It is not a comparison of equal work as often misrepresented. Men do in fact work more and earn more than women on average.

Another ingesting statistic is that despite working less and earning less, women actually spend more than men overall. In other words, men subsidize women’s spending.

If you’re talking about it in terms of the feminist interpretation of the gender pay gap- in America no. they believe that we still live in a time where women are legally allowed to be paid less than men while having identical, qualifications, identical, work histories, etc. that is not the case. women are not allowed legally to be discriminated against in workforce in terms of pay or anything else. Any discrepancies or variances in pay between a man and a woman at this point in America are primarily caused by either women taking time off more often taking advantage of sick days, more often working part-time versus full-time things of that nature that is what causes the discrepancy.

The biggest thing that isn’t understood by most women is that the year you are on maternity leave is not a year of experience, I had a good friend have Irish twins (kids within a year of each other, sorry if insensitive) and she was back for four months before going on leave again.

Here's one thing to think about. If a company could hire only women, and pay them less than men, and get the same output, there would be plenty of companies doing this because of greed. After all, companies love using cheap labor.

I think it’s really but primarily caused by the lack of rights fathers have. The pay gap occurs when women take a career break for children but they get to do this and men largely do not.

Women are more agreeable and tend not to ask for raises in the same manner men get.

Also women tend to do jobs that have less risk and therefore pay less which leads to the majority of the reported wage gap.

There is also some overlying sexism in play where some men can’t work for a woman so they tend not to get managerial roles even when they deserve them.

I don’t think it’s 100% equal but not because of misogyny. I think it depends on what job you do, if you do full or part time, and the way you negotiate. Men and women choose different jobs, women often work part time while men work full time and women don’t like to negotiate with their salary the way men do.

Giving your employees less money simply based on their gender is illegal as far as I’m aware of.

There's supposed to be a pay gap between people with more skill and people with less skill. People who work more hours and people who work less hours. People who pursue raises and people who don't.

It's not a targeted thing. Women just put less effort across the board and demand more money.

The Pay gap doesn’t exist in the way most people think. Woman and Men earn equally much Money everywhere. But what is true is that often they can earn money themselves because they have to do ALL the housework. This is one point wich actually needs to fixed. Like in Sweden where Fathers must do 50% of the housework. The theory men get generally paid more is complete bs.

Differences in pay between genders is a complex issue with a complex answer. I only know enough to know I don't know the whole story, but it's not as simple as "no pay gap exists", nor is it as simple as "men make x% more than women". It's highly variable across location and industry.

According to Google men work an average of 43 hours a week where as woman only work an average of 37 hours a week therefore woman should earn an average of 12.5% less then a man. (If working at the same job) Now naturally this doesn't mean the hourly wage is less or that the same position pays less it just means that a random 100,000 men's total wage should be a minimum 12% higher then 100,000 random womanm

In fact a lot of men don't mind as men participation in the workforce is steadily declining for decades.

And in fact why would men struggle? We need very little to be happy. In general women need expensive vacations, big houses, jewelry, cars, even men buy them to impress or atract women, not that they need it. Considering the above should't women work harder and earn more. So let them enjoy.

Anyway i hear women control 85% of consumer spending so they clearly need far more than equality.

I worked at a mortgage company who paid a brand new male underwriter significantly higher than a fully designated 30+ yr woman underwriter.

Where every position held by a man was paid significantly better than female counterparts.
