I’m surprised that the article called it out for what it is: financial abuse. And provided him with contact info for a support group for surviving economic abuse. That is at least a step in the right direction to publically acknowledge that a man can be the abused by his wife.

Never hand over your total finances to your wife. If she is handling the bills, only hand over what is required. But in reality, if you are the breadwinner then you should be the one handling the finances and the bills. That is your hard earned money. I have heard of friends who had services shut down because they gave their partner money for bills that never got paid. Don’t be the sucker who gets the electricity shut off and you find out you owe 6 months of payments all because you blindly trusted your partner to handle it.

Take their own advice to eachother and have your own separate savings account and escape fund. They tend to want everything from you after a breakup and they want to see you fail, even if you’re leaving because of their wrongdoings. It’s so expensive to rebuild from nothing, get ahead of it.

This guy is fuuuuuuucked. Or rather, financially fucked, she's certainly using her free time to find a new man. We all know, she has to put out in order to get out. I'm sure she's been putting out a lot.

The human pair bond is asymmetrical. The basic paradigm is that men provide and women receive. Women have been conditioned to expect this, through eons of evolution.

And avoid living in states with common law marriage. If you’re outside the U.S., look at your own local laws on common law marriage and adjust accordingly.

You should be with someone you love and can trust. However, you also need to understand and prepare for them changing once time passes. Even you as a man can change, but stick to your word until they make it impossible to.

That was a hard lesson I had to learn. Never give control of finances. Unless you can trust her with money (extremely rare). I used to be in that exact position. I'd work, then she'd have control of finances. It was too convenient, to assume she had free time and therefore could be responsible for it.

Instead, I learned that she had free reign to do whatever she wanted. And what she wanted was to be irresponsible. When I had control, we had some debt. But it was manageable. Car loan and school loans. Making minimum payments. But it was still doable.

After she got control, we went further into debt each month. By the end, we were about 20k more in debt (she insisted on opening a credit card in her name to "cover the difference"). She left, I stopped her having control. She threatened all kinds of stuff. Got a divorce attorney. I ended up having to pay another 10k to cover that attorney that was used against me.

In the end, it was absolutely a devastating experience, and hard lesson learned.

After taxes my paycheck is split 2/3rds checking and 1/3rd investment account. All my bills are paid out of my checking account. I have a nice nest egg in my investment account.

If I was sharing an account with a woman she would think I only had the checking account because the investment account is all online.
