Some people might immediately say that this stat only illustrates or backs up the idea or notion that men are inherently more violent than women and more likely to commit serious crimes than women, but the reality — as we all know — is that it is well documented that men receive much more severe and harsh punishments for similar crimes as women. It's likely that it's much less socially acceptable to execute women than men and the stats back this up.

The justice system was only designed to punish criminal men. Which is why they are typically hesitant to give women harsher sentences or sentence them at all. Nuance comes into the equation when women are the perpetrators. Suddenly, things like killing your children whilst still tragic, becomes not so bad.

This would be more powerful if you showed it side by side with the fact that women commit 12% of murders, yet get only 1.5% of death penalties, while men commit 88% of murders, but get 98.%% of death penalties. It shows systemic bias, rather than men just committing more murders.

Can you normalize it by severity of crime? I think this poster would be more effective if you could see that the crime was the exactly the same. Maybe something like "premeditated murder of a single person in state X leads to a death sentence in Y% of the male cases, but only Z% of the female ones" ( but better worded :D )

No one deserves execution no matter the crime.

Beccaria not only believed it ineffective, but barbaric.

The punishment of death is pernicious to society, from the example of barbarity it affords. If the passions, or the necessity of war, have taught men to shed the blood of their fellow creatures, the laws, which are intended to moderate the ferocity of mankind, should not increase it by examples of barbarity, the more horrible as this punishment is usually attended with formal pageantry.

This percentage is not important.

Let's say the US were a democracy where more than two parties could be voted for. And let's say all is going well, but the only relevant topic for this election right now were this percentage. There are 6 parties to choose from:

Party A: We will keep this percentage at 98.5%.
Party B: We will change this percentage to be only 80%.
Party C: We will change this percentage to be only 60%.
Party D: We will change this percentage to be 50%.
Party E: We will change this percentage to be 10%.
Party F: We will change this percentage to be 1.5%.

Who should you vote for and why?

My point is: You can't take the status quo (98.5%) and then make policies so it becomes another number, and then call this change alone progress towards something better.

So you must admit: This percentage is not important.
