Hi everyone,
I'm a 42M married to a 38F with two lovely daughters of 9 and 4 yo.
I'll be honest immediately, I made big mistakes in my life. We bot have successful jobs, are financially well off and have everything a family desires (good house, good jobs, ...).
In 2018 we had a major marriage crisis when my wife admitted to having an affair with a colleague. Needless to say my world crashed. But we went to counseling, worked on ourselves and I forgave her and had our second daughter.
I was not the perfect husband either, I worked hard and was always tired in the evening so I didn't do the amount of chores or appreciated her in the way she deserved. She's not a bad person and she's a lovely mom.
Sadly, I had unresolved childhood trauma (was abused physically by my father) and I only learned to be happy about myself in life when 'I achieved something'. It was terrible to realize then that you could feel so unfulfilled when eventually you reached all your life goals at the age of 38 and so I had a severe midlife crisis. I wondered what the sense of life was, how I should be happy with what I have and try to enjoy the family life and time spent with my children.
I talked about this with my wife but she didn't support me during this period and wasn't there for me emotionally when I needed it the most. I am also to blame in a way that I didn't communicate my needs clearly.
Fast forward 2021 and I made the biggest mistake in my life and destroyed every morals I had. Everyday when I look in the mirror I resent myself for what I did then which was cheating on my wife.
I will make no excuses about this, I am a horrible person and I deserve all the self-guilt I have been feeling. I have been to a dark place but am feeling much better now.
Off course, being the coward I am, I never deared to confess to my wife.
Fast forward this year, and my wife had a work promotion and became less available every day to spend time with the children or me. We grew further apart and we didn't have any more intimacy. She resents me for this and became more and more passive-aggressive.
I, on the other hand still feel so guilty and I deserve the divorce which is surely upon us in short time.
But when i look at my two daughters and when I think about the good times we had in the beginning as a couple I don't want to let this end like this.
Despite everything, I still love and care about her. (And yes, I know that 95% of the comments will probably say that 'you stopped loving her when you cheated on her')
I want to make this work and I'm ready to take all the blame I deserve.
I don't want to be the person I see in the mirror now and I want to save my mariage.
Any advice?
Thx for the help and feedback
