A patriarchal system puts men above women in the hierarchy, at the cost (usually) of absolutely everyone. Men, in this system, have to be strong, show no weakness and uphold their power and identity with violence or force if necessary, leaving men miserable and insecure if they (like all humans) have moments of weakness. Women tend to get shoved into the role of the weak, silly, sexual, hysterical, caretaker who simultaneously needs to be taken care of. It’s how our system has tended to operate on a large scale for millennia, and we make laws, norms, and expectations accordingly when existing ones go unquestioned, which perpetuates it.

It’s not that every man is an individual, violent, evil oppressor. It’s that we all live in a system that’s shoved us all unfairly into roles for so long that we don’t see all of the ways that we unconsciously (and sometimes consciously) uphold it. Yes, some men are violent and actively oppress others. Hopefully we can all avoid being hurt by them. Some men are amazing and wonderful and actively bringing good into the world. Many are somewhere in between, and will unconsciously uphold oppression sometimes and actively dismantle it at other times.

Personally, as a woman, I try to find a man knowing that he isn’t personally responsible for the fact that many car companies still don’t have crash test dummies that mimic female bodies, but who agrees that that shit is wrong and needs to be worked on. I try to improve the world that he faces too, so that he can get mental health help, live in a world where he doesn’t have to get drafted, etc.

If he tries to tell me that there don’t need to be female crash test dummies because women don’t need to drive anyway? Yeah, fuck that guy and his sexism individually and specifically.

Because not all men share the viewpoints of the men who are the oppressors. ALL men aren't bad, and this post assumes that feminists believe all men want all women to be subjugated. That's just ridiculous.

But if i would answer this in a good faith, because 1) i have my sexual needs 2) there are good men. We all still in the patriarchal system but there are more progressive views and less, and i can choose more progressive. Also women did not exist in vacuum all those centuries and supported the system too, just like now. And again the question is how much.
