Ideally, nobody gets drafted. Only volunteers of both sexes should serve in the military.

However, if there is a draft, it should be applied equally to men and women. Women have more rights than men, so should be subject to equal responsibilities under the law too.

I know one leading men’s rights group has filed lawsuits claiming that if we are are to have selective service, it should equally apply to both men and women. Given the various roles in today’s military, I see no reason women shouldn’t be required to equally serve or equally register for potential service in the event a draft is ever required.

That said, while I feel both women and men should be equally subject to selective service, I think the best solution is voluntary service, with pay and other perks necessary to attract good people.

Related, while I am overall opposed to advantaging any segment of the population above others, I have no problem giving current military and vets some job perks for their service. Feminists advocate women be given perks just for being women. I’d far rather perks be given based on service to our country.

Here's my take. If men are biologically the best of the best and should be drafted in times of need to fulfill their gender roles to go to war, then women should be drafted to keep up the population of men as that is their gender role and they are the best at it. Women would be abducted away from their loved ones, their children, their families, their careers, everything they've ever known. They would then be placed in birthing units. They'd be put through a rigorous basic training to make sure their body is in the best shape possible, and then forced to get pregnant and have children repeatedly until the war is over. The healthcare available would mirror the men's healthcare on the frontlines so that equal numbers of men and women die as resources are limited. All women, upon turning 18 years old need to either sign up for selective birthing service or be ineligible for federal programs and possibly face fines or even prison.

If you don't think that's acceptable then why on earth do you think it's acceptable to do the same to men?

Equality means either no one is forced to give up all of their basic rights, or everyone is.

Not all military service is combat, even during active conflicts. You are saying that women are inferior to men even for non-combat work (presumably outside the military as well), is that correct?

Any government that is strong enough to compel labor like this is inherently a threat to its population. (Of course we can argue what are the lesser evils, though)

Over the past 15 years, life expectancy has dropped. Why don't we "draft" multimillionaires and health experts to contribute their resources and energy to save our society? (They need to stop what they are working on, leave their family and go win the mission at whatever personal cost)

Fertility rates are at crisis levels among native populations in Europe and North America. Should these governments just "draft" women to be inseminated and carry pregnancies to term? For the greater good? (Patriotism and so on)

Maybe you can clarify where you believe the line is when someone (such as a government staffer) should not be able to force someone else to do something they don't want.

Maybe you can also let us know how you think we should pick the winners and losers in each collective scheme for "the greater good." You already explained how men are superior to women and therefore must absorb the brunt for the military draft.

Also, is it necessary for military conscription to disproportionately affect poor people? Or are they just more patriotic?

Also who decides which (often illegal) wars are worth fighting with compelled labor? You just said "patriotism" something or other without considering the validity of the conflict in the first place (like how many weapons of mass destruction need to be reported in the new York times for you to say that people should be forced into fighting based on their sex? I'm assuming the answer is somewhere around zero, but I'd like to understand)

But maybe you're right and we need compelled labor (even if it results in death, injury or coming home to find out your family moved on without you). I'm which case we can start a draft for eradicating child slavery or writing better reddit posts.

The draft is completely immoral. I would only give one caveat :

If the system is an actual democracy (not a republic) : the various assemblies are selected through sortition, the few offices that require election use imperative and revocable mandate, with account rendition to the public, the medias are forbidden to be owned by big money and fonction only as cooperative or something similar to limit heavily propaganda by a given class, with various commissions of randomly selected citizens working as oversight of government, and war being impossible to declare without a referendum where the vote is not anonymous and the people who voted for the war have to go fight it, then I might be ok with a draft of the general population, as in such a democratic system. If there is a war, it shouldn't be a war to benefit the private interests of an elite few.

There are biological differences between men as a group and women as a group, and obviously it makes sense to take advantage of them not just in defence but in every aspect of life.

But often the biological differences between men and women as individuals are more important, and any society that ignores the individual will not succeed. Restricting people to one role or another is not a good idea, and individuals should make their way to the roles that best make use of their skills, abilities and attributes. The end result will not be a 50/50 split, but it will also not be a 0/100 split, and any society that succeeds will allow for that flexibility.

When people think about the draft in the US, they think about the Vietnam war, not WWII. Men were conscripted in both wars, in fact it was during WWII that the age of conscription was lowered from 21 to 18. But it wasn’t until the Vietnam war that people really cared about the fact that we were conscripting 18 year old men who didn’t have the vote and wouldn’t until they turned 21. It wasn’t until the Vietnam war that there was this big push to also lower the voting age to 18 as well, and with the slogan “old enough to fight, old enough to vote.”

It turns out, conscription isn’t as necessary or as controversial when the people support the war effort as strongly as they did in WWII. Young men will voluntarily enlist, and will Even lie about their age to do so when they feel that the war and our involvement in it is justified. And those young men won‘t be too worried about things like their voting rights in such times, they’ll see their voluntary service as a more important expression of agency, and they‘ll worry about their rights later.

Contrast this with the Vietnam War. It is now the more popular consensus that our involvement was not justified and that sending our young men to die their against their will was unjust, and it’s not like it ever had the same public support as WWII did after Pearl Harbor.

The draft isn’t an expression of patriotism. I think it’s actually best for a country to only be able to engage in war at the scale where countless young men need to die IF they have enough support from the people that young men are signing up voluntarily. If our government can’t sufficiently justify its wars to the people, they shouldn’t be able to override the will of the people and take their young men to send off to die. Let our governments earn patriotism.

If the draft is necessary at times for national defense and survival, then so be it.

Just make sure to create a parallel Reproductive Registry that states that in times of need, when the US needs to repopulate (particularly immediately after men have been drafted and killed in war), women can be called upon to be mandatorily inseminated and forced to bear and raise a child for 4-8 years.

I don't see why people are so upset that women's constitutionally guaranteed rights can be permanently revoked and they can be imprisoned and fined for refusal. It's still 'voluntary,' after all! And besides, obviously we'll never use that Reproductive Registry, which is why we need to safeguard the option in case we ever do.

It's just to make sure that in the worst case scenario, the American people are ready and able to survive. Think of national security, who will fight the next war if we don't force all medically qualified women between 18-35 to have children at gunpoint?

Now, let's hear your bodily autonomy, personal freedoms, and tyranny of the state arguments again. I'm sure you can set aside biases and acknowledge that being raped by and for your country is an honor and a privilege, something women should be shamed and attacked for not volunteering for, not a capricious and monstrous evil justified by the false means of "temporary security."

Hell, we can even throw in free college for the women who survive their tour of service, just to sweeten the pot further.

As a veteran of the US Navy, there are 6 things I would like to say on this matter.

1: Most MRAs, including me, want full abolition of the draft.

2: It's mostly a common myth that men's voting rights are tied to the draft, in the US at least. This is a common myth because when you go to register to vote after your 18th birthday, you do so at the post office, and that's also where you sign up for the draft, so you just killed two birds with one stone.

(Edit:) This is how it works prior to the internet, with the internet you have to go to two separate websites to register for both. But there are some privileges that you directly lose if you don't sign up for the draft such as the inability to work for the federal government. (End edit)

It's only mostly a myth though because technically it is a crime to not sign up, and you can lose your right to vote if you are convicted with said crime, though most states will grant that right back automatically when you have fully served your sentence.

3: This is the most important one in my opinion. Draftees make shit soldiers. You have fallen into a common pitfall when talking about the draft in thinking that most men who are signed up for it but not the military never want to join the military. This isn't the case. A lot of people who volunteer for the military are turned away at the door or sent home from basic. These rejects can also be drafted.

So draftees are people who didn't want to join in the first place, and people who couldn't join previously for one reason or another. This makes for lower quality soldiers.

4: You are just flat out wrong about there not being any women in Spec Ops. While the US military does not have women in some of the spec ops teams, such as the Navy SEALs, we most certainly do have women in the Army Rangers, Green Berets, Air Force STOs and Navy SWCC.

And before anyone comments, the spec ops teams have always required women to be held to the same standard as men as far as physical training requirements go, and DOD this year has extended gender-neutral requirements to all combat roles. Yes I'm calling it the DOD and not the DOW. I don't care what the executive branch says, they don't have the authorization to change the name without Congress approval.

5: Even if women were not authorized to join combat roles, they could still do logistical and other support rules. You've even commented on this being a thing that would be fair. One of the things that makes the US military one of the most effective fighting forces in the world is our logistical superiority. One of the things that both Nazi Germany as well as Imperial Japan found out was that while they were struggling to feed their military, in their home land, We were able to fully feed and supply our military with the equipment to get the job done from across the fucking world.

6: My final point is to address your word on patriotism, and in doing so I'm going to be providing a quote from 18th century English poet William Cowper. "No man can be a patriot on an empty stomach." When our needs aren't being met, why should we support a country that is treating us like secondhand citizens?

Mandatory draft for everyone. If you have a right to get up one day, go to the voting booth, and decide if the country is going to be run by someone who will start a war, you have an obligation to face the consequences of your choices.

Sure, women may not be physically fit for all combat roles, but they have to stay and do war supportive things, just like in WW2. Noone gets the option to leave or live a life like the war isn't happening.

It's an unfortunate necessity. In a perfect world, war doesn't exist, but that world is not this one. If you do not go out to war and scare people into leaving your country alone, you'll be on the receiving end, and if history is any indicator, the winner is the one who decides who did the war crimes and who didn't.

I would love for us not to need a draft, but it's unrealistic. Thank people who serve in the military voluntarily, they are the only thing standing between us and a draft. Also, the only thing that would pull us all is a major ground war where we're losing. If a draft gets called, it's because we've exhausted all of our other options. Ukraine is a great example of this. They are fighting a larger enemy, exhausted all other options, and are now drafting men.

- it’s not fair if women don’t get drafted (so let’s make things worse for men by burdening them with useless fighters that will get killed and raped by the enemy. Let’s send the blind, paraplegic and 80 year old men too)

- it’s slavery (to believe this you also have to believe that putting people in prison for crimes is also slavery. It’s a lazy argument. Democratic societies require rules. Make choices that harm your fellow citizens and you have to face the consequences)

If you don’t want to be drafted then the best thing you can do is support development of technology that ensures that just throwing large numbers of human beings at the enemy is ineffective. Then it will never be needed.
