I mean, if you want to go there, more societally enforced religion, but that shit is really fucking wack. That style of religious enforcement of social norms can fuck off back to the 12th century.

Edit: Worth adding that re-defining what family means in the modern age would be beneficial in some ways. In a lot of traditional communities (including the Armenian community which I grew up in), a lot of parenting type responsibilities are spread among the extended family, and families are very tightly knit. I don't quite see the same within traditional American culture.

There is also a huge gap in productivity gains and wage gains since 1970, so workers are more productive now, but make comparatively less. Finances play a huge role in familial stability. There is a very large economic component to this as well.

This is a multifaceted issue that needs to be solved using a variety of both economic and social solutions.

The nuclear family is very much a temporary unit that we now see as the norm. In reality, the extended family where children were either sometimes raised either by other adults within the family or by Aunts and Uncles who either have better resources or their children are grown. "Single" mothers were shipped off to the convent or everybody had a shotgun marriage. I asked an elderly family member about the pre marital sex thing before reliable BC was invented and she said "good" girls did in fact have sex with the men they all eventually married. A decent chunk of them were pregnant at their hastily thrown together weddings.

Most of human history we were agricultural or semi agricultural and that required a more collectivist mindset, the harvest under non modern agro technology required many hands.

Children and young adults died all the time from common diseases, war, starvation, the plague, child birth, families were "stable" in the sense that people were not getting divorced by folks were always dying and not in a pleasant way dying from an infection or cancer prior to the 20th century was pretty not awesome. Families were "stable" but that does not mean life itself was stable or there was not quite a bit of social and political disruption and chaos.

I have a lot of people claiming that marriages back then were hot grabage & families were just as unstable. Is there any data to support this? The rise of cohabitation breeds much more instability (interpartner violence particularly) than marriage.

You misunderstand, before the pill, women which were single and had a child were unable to work for themselves, so they just married another guy. Women now can live off the system and of menial work.

The nuclear family unit was a breif and mostly American invention, brought about mostly by the post war economy and explosion of suburbia. Like the 1950s style housewife relationship, it is neither long lived, nor as stable as tradcons like to suggest.

An extended family unit, with grandparents, aunts, and uncles has worked for thousands of years and is far easier on the parents than a 'traditional' nuclear family. Your source makes it seem like there has been an explosion of single parents, and while that number has greatly increased for various reasons, the disclaimer in the graph also highlights that they dumped a large amount of other family units in that category, over inflating it.

A child having two parents will grow up more stable on average than a child go a single parent. But a child in a happy non traditional household will be vastly more stable on average than one growing up in a dysfunctional and abusive two parent household. I.e. better the child be with a stable non traditional family, than a non stable traditional one.

As I've said before - there's more opportunities for mothers to not tolerate bad relationships and they are now empowered to up and leave. Without subjecting themselves and their children to poverty. Likewise, father's can be safely in the Knowledge that if they leave their toxic relationships - the children would be OK.

It's not like before this all the traditional 'intact' families were happy and healthy. They had problems, many problems - but they reluctantly stuck through with them. Some of these parents endured their partner having an affairs, slept in seperate bedrooms, domestic abuse and so on. This in itself is bad for children. Children living in a toxic household are worse of than with seperated parents that are happy. My boomer grandparents slept in seperate beds for a good chunk of their marriage and my other grandma stayed with her husband who cheated regularly.

What's the solution? People need to stop rushing into starting families and have better skills in vetting each other. They also need to actually maintain their relationship.

Very anacdotal but I left a previous boyfriend and was a single mother for two years or so. It fell apart because I met him when I was 18 and had a child at 19. And the tender age of 18 I did not understand men, and all that dating them entailed. Things for me turned out fine, myself and my daughter are happy as clams. My ex met someone better suited to him and from what I can see they are also very happy.

Lastly I think the best place to post this question would be on a sociology sub or a history sub. I don't think this sub is going to understand the societal, political and historical factors behind this post.

What is the problem?

The Nuclear Family is a phenomenon of a certain time and place in history. It is not the default or normal state of affairs, however obvious it may seem at first.

Now, there are a lot of surrounding issues, such as fatherlessness, which are related, but notice how none of your links want to talk about the role the criminal justice system plays in contributing to that.

If you want to talk about the real issues, I'd be happy to, but your disingenuous comment about comparing single motherhood in relation to access to birth control makes me doubt your sincerity.
