because these two companies have ~400GB of data amassed in no comprehensible folder structure and assigned NTFS ACLs individually rather than by group, and that just sounds fucking painful to manage.

So I browse reddit, interspersed with spurts of effort.

Because I firmly believe that you pay either way - in your own time, or your own money

I can pay people to do the stuff I don't want to do (clean my house, yard work, cook food/pour drinks, etc) so that I have the time to do what I want to do/know I should focus on - exercising, my career, volunteering

It's just priorities, and figuring out where to put my resources

Mostly that being too worn out to feel good from the things that require the work & focus to accomplish happens to me all the time makes me second guess effort quite a bit.

The things I should be doing are boring compared to the things that I want to do.

I therefore lack the motivation to do the things that I should be doing.

I also recognise that I am mortal, and whatever I achieve, whatever I accumulate, I will still die.

At this point, everything that I've achieved and accumulated from a material and achievement perspective will be worthless, even though we're continually told on an almost perpetual basis that self-improvement and ambition is really important.

Once I die, either life is entirely materialistic, and consciousness is only a vehicle of this existence, in which case everything I do is meaningless.

Or the universe is infinite, and my consciousness will live on in a different expression, in which case all that matters in this life is experience, information-gathering, self-knowledge and the acquisition of wisdom.

Either way, everything you achieve is meaningless.

From a personal point-of-view, I am quite proud of what I've achieved in my career, and I want to write more books, which I will be doing next year. However, if it wasn't for the monetary paradigm, if my basic needs were satiated and I was financially secure, then I would still write because I enjoy it, but my absolute priority would be to enjoy life, as it is now.

Because I'm just going to end up fertilising mushrooms whatever happens.

Also, once you have experienced a small amount of success, if you are an evolved person then you realise the essential pointlessness in chasing more and more success, and the trinkets associated with it.

Once you've got a place to live, and it's located somewhere that suits your needs, and you have good people in your life, and you don't want for anything, then there is nothing you're going to achieve or acquire that will make you happier.

Things I should be doing: more research and planning for the things I ultimately want to do. Right now, that’s mainly getting prepped for Christmas, booking things for my upcoming honeymoon, and figuring out what to get for my makeshift garden.

Two reasons I’m not actually doing it: one is because I very easily fall into YouTube holes where I just watch hours of makeup tutorials and Sortedfood battles.

But more of an impact is that I’m kind of saving these things. I’m not used to having such an empty social calendar. Before I moved to Australia, I had stuff going on 5-6 evenings a week. Now I have plans 2-3. So I feel like I need to stretch out the few activities I do have. It’s not entirely sensical.

Because I am semi-trash at managing time, and career development takes time and effort. But I've also managed to increase my pay by 40% in the last year, so meh. This also extends to getting my SO her Christmas presents though, I could do that. Mostly I just dislike my commute now, because it takes up to two and a half hours out of my day :(

Overall I am doing alright though, the things I need to be doing are all things that aren't absolutely pressing right now.

When I was very young, my dad brought me to Walmart and let me pick out some clothes for 'back to school' shopping. While I was taking out a shirt I wanted, I dropped another shirt - and if you've ever seen Walmart clothing areas during the back to school frenzy, it was not the only shirt on the ground. I brought the shirt I wanted over to my dad and asked if I could go try it on.

"What about the shirt you dropped?" he said.

"Sorry!" I said, and went to go put it back.

"No," he said, "you stay right here."

And then he asked me why I hadn't picked up the shirt. It would have been easy, I was short and very close to the ground. I said there was a pile of shirts, and I figured it was okay, and that someone who worked there would pick up all of the shirts at the end of the day.

He said "everybody else thought that too, and that's why it's been a nightmare trying to find shirts in your size. Did you realize that you were part of the problem? Do you remember how frustrated you were trying to find shirts a moment ago? Do you realize that was your fault? Do you not feel any responsibility to the next little girl looking for a shirt in that size? Do you think it will be easier for her to pick up the shirt than it would have been for you?"

At this point I was bawling in Walmart, begging to be allowed to go back and pick up the shirt, promising to pick up all the other shirts and that I'd never do it again, and he was getting a lot of angry looks from passersby. He did not care. He kneeled down and looked at me and told me that the distress that I was feeling was a lesson. That I should feel this way every time I had a small opportunity to make the world better, and failed to take it, for no good reason but my own convenience, I should remember how ashamed I felt right then. I went and tried on the clothes, we bought what fit, and I was sullen the whole way home. It was a near-traumatizing and unforgettable lesson.

I pick up trash when I see it, pick up shirts when they fall, and wash my dishes and put them away without letting them languish in a common kitchen. Most of the time. When I don't, I feel like shit - but sometimes the other thing I want to or need to be doing is compelling, sometimes my hands are full, sometimes the piece of trash is too big and there's no bin for a mile.

I'm mostly grateful for the way my dad raised me, but the guilt I feel when I don't do what I know I'm supposed to isn't very pleasant, and I wish there was a way to motivate myself to do it other than the fear of guilt.

I’m tired...

There are a metric fuckton of stuff I “should” be doing. I know. Most of it is not even that hard or difficult.

But! 2 kids under 5, full days at work, running a business on the side after work, keeping a home. I can usually “wind down” at around 10pm, and then I am so tired I just want to sit in a chair and mindlessly browse or go to bed early.

Cause I'm a fucking idiot and I can't for the life of me (literally lol) think ahead to the fact that I'm going to die early in a horrible way.

I'm trying to quit smoking and it's fucking hard lol. It's not even the physical addiction part, like that's not easy either, but it's just the habit of it. But I've only had 3 today, so let's hope tomorrow is better.

I feel fatigued and pressed for time. I work 10 hour days 5 days a week and will continue to do so for a few more months till I’m totally out of debt. Then I’m going down to part time/on call and getting back to the gym and grinding on job applications.

I have met a lot of goals this year too. Paid off credit cards, student loans, working on paying my parents back the legal fees from my false DV accusation. Started a Roth IRA and will be maxing it for the year .

Habits take a while to build. Also the brain can only take on one or two new things at a time.

At the moment I am succeeding in getting study and exercise into a habit (I also work full time).

Come the new year, I will be adding meditation back in.

Then once I have a few things paid off (May - June time) I will be rebuilding my social life.

If I try and do everything at once, nothing will be permanent and I will give up. So just taking baby steps.
