You can be sexual with someone via flirting and not have sex with them for a myriad of reasons.

'Flirting for tips' is still flirting, but it's with an ulterior motive. Just like any kind of socializing could have ulterior motives.

Sure, flirting for many people is just another way of saying “bantering”. But this is one of those things MANY people disagree on. I get accused of flirting all the damn time when I’m just being sociable lol.

Yes. You can say, "I find you attractive", while maintaining the understanding that nothing will come of it in flirtatious language / behavior / tone. There's always the risk you'll be misunderstood, though.

I’ve been at a restaurant where a girl I know works at. Her and her coworkers call customers “lovelies.” They’ll walk up to a table and say “Hello, my lovelies. Can I start you off with something to drink?”

It’s blatantly obvious that they’re acting cutesy for better tips, which takes away the “flirting” aspect of the interaction.

There is a difference when someone is flirting because they’re interested, and someone acting cutesy because they want something from you. Some just do it better than others (i.e., if a girl that was ever interested in me referred to me as though my name was “lovely,” she would be the first).

Yes. If an incorporeal but visible angel came down from heaven, it would be possible to flirt with it although not to have sex. Therefore, one can flirt without the possibility of sex.

Sure? I mean, I flirt with my friends all the time, and that's when our orientations aren't even compatible, so we know there will be no sex. I do think it's icky for partnered (mono) people to flirt though, unless they know the person will take it in a friendly way. Some flirting can just be done in good fun.

I'm not sure where I'd draw the line. I don't think it's flirting when it's just for tips or free drinks, especially if the other party is aware of the motive. But if it's for attention/validation, maybe, but it's a grey area, maybe it depends on if they find the other person attractive...

you can have sexual undertones without any actual intent for things to progress past mere flirting.

it's normal and common for people to flirt for fun. i play flirt with female friends and acquaintances all the time.

One thing I’ve realized is that people have wildly differing views of flirting. I always viewed it as having sexual or romantic undertones but apparently lots of people view it as more “casual” or friendly or something.

I remember this babe I was talking to and she said “customer service is easy, just flirt with men, women and children”
