To not to take them seriously too often, especially when a woman says something absurd or outrageous.

That sounds misogynistic to me. Why wouldn't they have something serious to say? Why wouldn't it be worth taking seriously? Maybe she's making an important point and something good will come out of it.

Most 12-year-old girls are NOT capable of giving birth safely or of raising a baby. the extreme high birth fatality/birth injury rate of girls who give birth in developing countries is testament to that.

they don't have the necessary body size to carry a pregnancy safely
they are children themselves in the mind and are totally unready to care for a baby

And, both boys and girls babysit younger siblings. No one sensible leaves their baby/toddler with a 12-year-old babysitter if she/he is not their sibling, so again - false.

One can be hateful and/or dismissive without intending to be so.

This statement and line of thinking accomplishes both.

It is also only based in reality insofar as it applies to both genders. Men and women both bloviate, exaggerate and act defensively or childishly at times. It would be foolish to take anyone on Earth seriously all the time.

Women employ more emotional modes of communication, but they do not preclude them from acting rationally. I would compare a woman's irrational emotionality to a man's irrational pride or aggression. Each serves its own purpose, but neither sex is a slave to them entirely and both sexes benefit from these features in the opposite sex. I would add, also, that all of these things can be rationally and effectively employed when necessary.

So, I agree that this is sexist. I wouldn't call it misogynist, as I think the people who use it are mostly trying to be benevolent to creatures they view as beneath them. That plays into the irrational pride I mentioned earlier.

Belittling would be a better term for this, honestly.

Its sexist in the way it's presented, but it's not bad advice in and of itself. I've had good results buy treating men like children, I can imagine that it would work on some women too

When you worship/fear something and make it your locus, that's a terrifying position to be in, as you're entirely at the mercy of that entity. One way to cope with your insecurity is to try to shrink your 'god' down to a size and form that isn't so threatening. And what is less threatening than a child?

To understand what I mean, consider the way men shrunk the God of the Universe down to a much less threatening form -- a man who ultimately could be controlled, as in "executed."

A god who has been reduced to an infant in a manger is a god we can grapple with.

A woman who has been reduced to a child is one we need not fear.

In reality, people are often silly and there's an art to intuiting when and how to take them seriously.

No because it's correct. Effeminacy is in many ways neoteny. Women have evolved to be able to influence people and gain their protection through neoteny: having traits of the young/juveniles. To do this effectively they really do think like kids part of the time.

People love to fight against this but this is what neoteny is FOR. Baby animals aren't just small, they look the way they do to signal youth and elicit pity (which defuses aggression) or even help. Think about it. You can either do things yourself or cooperate. Being helped is a high form of cooperation, hence much more survival ability.

Men also do this- politicians and businessmen shave their faces to appear more young/effeminate so that they can be less threatening and gain cooperation easier. This has been true going back to Ancient Rome.

The reason people hate this is society has somewhat demonized femininity and children, calling then useless (which in truth is a conceptual variant on hypoagency.) But it's like saying a deer is useless because it runs and doesn't have big claws and teeth. It's just a different evolutionary strategy.

1) A certain amount of hatred toward women is probably necessary in order to distort reality such that you get to "women are children."

2) Hateful or not is beside the point, the problem is really what results from people thinking that "women are children."

Most of those quotes are from dude largely considered a misogynist himself. Ol' Artie Schopenhauer went on to make such hallmark claims about women as:

"woman is by nature meant to obey".
"there would be more warrant for describing women as the unaesthetic sex."
"under-sized, narrow-shouldered, broad-hipped, and short-legged race"
"One need only look at a woman’s shape to discover that she is not intended for either too much mental or too much physical work"

Basically, fuck that old dead nerd.

I get the idea of not putting women on a pedastal, but misogynistic condescention isn't the best cure for mindless worship. Holding adults to a reasonable standard should always be the default.

I don't find it misogynistic, I would find that statement to be interesting if a man said that to me, it would definitely form the way I interacted with him and how seriously I took him. It would also depend on the context in which it was presented to me.
