Martial arts lessons. Judo, Karate, Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, whatever.

[–]IIHotelYorbatreats objects like women3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And don't just let them quit when things get kind of boring or challenging.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is really good advice. I started and quit a few different sports/hobbies as a kid. Kinda wish my parents had forced me to stick it out sometimes when I lost motivation.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Seconded. I wish I'd done real martial arts training from a young age (did some bs taekwondo for 8 months). Would have helped my confidence as the small guy who got picked on in school. I train Jiu Jitsu casually now, so I'd probably put my kid in those classes. It's fun and practical.

[–]horsefartsineyes0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Taekwondo is definitely not bullshit, just takes a long time to get good at

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not bullshit if you train at a good place, but where I trained was very commercialized and watered down. Learned two short forms in 8 months, never sparred once.

[–]horsefartsineyes1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh okay yeah that's total bullshit lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

And can you elaborate on what those things are good for from your perspective?

And at what age should that start?

[–]BiggerDthanYouBluetopia4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Motivation, determination, physical fitness, control over his body, balance, learning how to take a punch and how to fall in a controlled way, being able to stand up against bullies, etc

[–]alreadyredschoolRational egoism < Toxic idealism0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Humility?

What martial art do you do?

[–]Offhisgame0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Those are gained from any sport. If anything i found many of the kids that took martial arts got a sense of entitlement from it. Team sports>individual. SOCIAL skills are the key to any man.

[–]PurpleBanner0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I recommend Judo because its a little like wrestling.

In addition the excellent answers given, martial arts is also good at teaching young minds to encounter, interact with and cope with the unpredictable nature of life.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Spend time outside fishing, hunting, and playing sports. The sun is good for bone strength and testosterone production. Good habits start early

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do they find that people who grow up in sunny California have better bones/testosterone or anything?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The science on vitimin d and Bone strength has been well researched by now

Don't homeschool your children. Good god people...

It's great to get the kid involved with stuff, but leave him some alone time to just chill, play with his toys, watch cartoons, have friends over without it being scheduled, etc. Too much structure can be a bad thing sometimes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I used to think it was for fundies to brainwash their kids.

then I start hearing from other dads talk about what teachers are telling them.

Now, I'm open to listen.

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

School is about socialization, not actually learning anything. That's why you go to college.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Then join the military, you get paid, and learn how to do shit in life

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

you won't make it in the military if you've never been socialized by your peers outside of your family

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They train that too

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or you could just do it the normal way like everyone else and send your kid to school.

[–]erileighBlue Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I intend to homeschool my kids because public school was hell for me on an academic level, and private school is extremely overpriced for what you get.

This is probably just a Southern thing, but people, particularly teachers, superimpose their beliefs on a young mind, particularly if they don't understand and know the person they're teaching. I would presumably know the child that came out of my body, therefore I would be better-equipped to fill in the gaps that my child would have. If I couldn't do that, I would recruit help (probably in the form of my husband/wife, who will probably be a STEM-y person because that's what I'm attracted to, God help me) and go from there.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Why can structure be bad?

[–]HawanjaAncient Deadly Ninja Baby0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Too much structure, is what I meant. Sometimes kids should just be allowed to run around and be kids, use their imaginations, etc.

[–]trpobservereats ass6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Spanking is hitting. DON'T HIT YOUR KIDS. Take it off the table and you will immediately improve as a parent, at least a little.

[–]SiahsargusThe Bi Guys2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'll spank my wife, I won't spank my kids.

[–]Eastuss༼ つ ▀̿_▀̿ ༽つ2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I've been spanked as a kid, it was measured and moderated, didn't lived it bad. I don't get why people are so nazi on this, I'm not against the idea of never hitting your children and never humiliate them. (because spanks were more humiliation and domination induced than actual pain)

But why so much care about it?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Short of kids who got belt buckles in the face, I don't see many spanked kids speaking ill of it.

Granted, it shouldn't be the first response, but at some point, realize kids respond well to being powerless. They need to learn some battles aren't winnable, or else they grow up to think they are invincible, and try fighting proud boys on campus with soy fed bodies

[–]trpobservereats ass1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've been spanked as a kid, it was measured and moderated, didn't lived it bad

Thats the response everybody gives. "I was spanked, I turned out fine/I was spanked, it made me a good person" etc. But there are a lot of assumptions and a LOT of biases built in to those anecdotal statements. Actual statistics and science on the matter only show that it is a net negative on human development.

because spanks were more humiliation and domination induced than actual pain

Its about fear, fundamentally. You're hitting somebody in such a way that they feel both scared and ashamed. That is why its such an immediately effective tool. That does not make it a good tool though.

But why so much care about it?

For me personally, I'm bothered by the ethics of it. We even think hitting a dog is bad, but doing it to a child is ok. I think hitting with the intent to cause fear and thus change behavior is inherently abusive. If you wouldn't do it to your spouse, I don't understand at all why you can make an exception for children. "Oh but its not hitting when its on this certain part of the body" say people desperate to avoid the possibility that they might be wrong, because that would mean dropping a lot of pride and reevaluating onesself on a very deep level.

Asking "why care?" is an odd question when you can at least understand that from some people's perspective this is violence.

Don't watch TV, keep him away from technology, or ration it at the very least. Don't buy him an iPhone when he's 7. Keep him away from the media. Homeschool him if at all possible.

Let him make his own mind up about things. Don't pay any attention to all the people on here recommending kickboxing, weightlifting, or whatever. I never had any interest in those things, and we will naturally gravitate towards what we want to do. There is no fucker that ever lived that will make me do something that I don't want to do, and if my parents had pushed me towards something it would have been a reflex reaction for me to rebel against it.

[–]Atlas_B_Shruggin🔪Yeetus that Feetus🔪5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

isnt this a recipe for creating a no fun, out of touch with his generation nerd who cant relate to girls?

[–]wub12344 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a very valid question.

This is why I haven't got kids. But I do think you can strike a balance of guiding them while also not imposing your beliefs on them.

Is the generation growing up now who can't wipe their own arse without being glued to a smartphone 'fun'?

I couldn't just sit idly by and allow my child to become vacuous, conditioned, and the slave to fashion, trends, fads and media that most people are.

I'm sure there is a happy medium you can strike where they are socialised but also able to think for themselves. What I couldn't do is put an iPhone in front of them at 6 and just allow them to slide into the idiocracy.

I'm not likely to have kids anyway, so I won't have to deal with these issues. But I don't think it's right to just allow your child to follow the same patterns of behaviour as everyone else just because they are 'normal'.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Heres the dilema. I remember playing Oregon Trail in elementary school on my Mac classic 2.

Having said that, those games weren't designed as an intermittent reward factory.

[–]Atlas_B_Shruggin🔪Yeetus that Feetus🔪2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

what

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point is. A lot of us were raised on novelty tech at a kids age. It may not be as sophisticated as todays dopamene-games (ludology they call it) but it didn't cause long term damage.

But I also see guys who never were able to put the games down, and stunted their long term lives because of it. The point was, they don't even make games anymore, they actively design them with casino strategies, to make maximum addiction.

No different than one-click porn or social-media whoring.

No responsible person would suggest 100% abstain, or 100% laissez-faire.

[–]Princeso_Bubblegum☭ The real red pill ☭1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Don't watch TV, keep him away from technology, or ration it at the very least.

This is just going to end up with a kid who doesn't know anything in pop culture and as a result is always on the outside looking in in social circles.

Let him make his own mind up about things. Don't pay any attention to all the people on here recommending kickboxing, weightlifting, or whatever.

Alright, ballet!

[–]wub12340 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is a difficult balance, as I said in the previous post. I personally don't consider not knowing anything about pop culture to be a bad thing! And I've always been on the outside looking in. But I accept that you might not want to push your child in that direction, but equally you might not want to push them in the direction of being a conformist, braindead, consumerist sheep.

It's difficult to strike the right balance, but it would be very hard for me to send my child into the education system knowing that they're putting rubbish in his or her head every day, for example.

It is probably better that I don't have kids then I won't have to make these difficult decisions.

[–]erileighBlue Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay, have you -seen- male dancers? They're toned, romantic, artistic, strong, and creative. Most male ballet dancers are straight, and in my experience they're constantly exposed (and "exposed") to ballerinas.

[–]LittleWindowpane points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

This kind of sheltering can be bad for kids: you might raise an inhibited incel like this. Let 'em play with fire, but not more than a little.

[–]wub12340 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's hard to know what to do for the best. I definitely understand other people's comments about socialisation, but I couldn't bring any child of mine up the way I see a lot of people approaching the matter.

I'm not likely to have kids so it won't matter.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Mostly nonsense

Heavy intense power lifting and roids might. Normal resistance training is fine. Humans have always done labor in childhood

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Completely unrelated. Height is more related to nutrition and environment. I grew up in a farming community where many men look like Giants compared to the city.

[–]alreadyredschoolRational egoism < Toxic idealism0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

None, it stems from a nonexistent study.

And there are several studies which report no stunted growth.

[–]SiahsargusThe Bi Guys1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's the opposite of true. Growing and strengthening you muscles will grow and strengthen your body.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

nonsense. theres no correlation between bone plates and muscular development. Otherwise, kids who lay rough, and stress their bodies with non weightlifting activities would be stunted.

If anything, they grow larger

[–]exit_sandmanstill not the MGTOW sandman FFS0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/top-5-teen-bodybuilding-rules.htm

Many teens hear about the rumor that weight training at a young age can stunt growth and this is the reason that this rumor got started.

You should understand that weight training itself is not going to stunt growth, but if you are weight training so intensely that the body has no energy left to use for the natural growth process, that's when you will not reach your full height.

So the main message here is watch the total intensity of your workouts during the week and also make sure you're eating enough total calories so that you still have plenty of energy for the body to grow and function normally.

Get the son meditating as soon as possible. Gaining at least some control over your thoughts will ease a lot of life's suffering.

Also teach him that while drugs and women can be fun, they are also the fastest way to destroy your life.

[–]erileighBlue Pill Woman0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What if you have a daughter?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men need a good balance of suffering. They need to learn how to overcome hardship. It's why parents who built a life from nothing have shitty kids. It's fucking hard to teach them the lessons you learned when you have your life of earned comfort.

Here's the creepy RP parenting sub

In my opinion, the best way to raise kids is to raise them to be strong, so whatever they choose to do, they'll do it well and they'll be prepared for life.

My kin? Oh, how lovely... I'm not subscribed to the TBP sub, nor do I make a habit of posting there. The flair represents my disagreement with TRP, not the subs I frequent.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Quite...

So the difference is your posting habits. I do agree on one big issue with TRP.

Our cheerleaders are fucking horrible.

Thanks. What's creepy about it?

It's just weird to try to micromanage your kids lives, there's people on there asking about sending their daughters to RPW and how to not raise their daughters to be sluts. How to get damage your kids or make them rebellious 101.

My step dad drilled ideas like "work hard" and "the worlds tough, so you gotta be tough" kinda ideas into my head, he never told me what I should be doing or forced me into anything.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It sounds eminently rational to me that one would think about (A) what went wrong in my life and (B) how can I "micro-manage" my kid's life so that the opposite is true for his life so that my pain is his gain.

Are you glad that he did that? Did that lead to success for you?

and how to not raise their daughters to be sluts

I would have said that this shouldn't be that hard considering that it was pretty normal in the days of youre, but how goes the saying - it takes a whole village to raise a kid.

Though proper parenting (both parents being present and an active part in their children's lives, having boundaries set etc.) should do wonders.

[–]IckyStickyPoo1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

But how do you raise boys not be sluts? Does that take a village too?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Teach them to be alpha bucks

Where is the best description of what alpha bucks is?

And how do you teach it?

And what are the pros/cons of being AB versus being AF?

Yayyy alpha bucks for everyone. Come and git yer alfa buckeroonies.

If I wanted this, all I would have to do was telling the boys 24/7 that girls are better human beings and that they should be more like them, that they like nice guys and that one day they'll find one who will love them for who they are.

Raising boys like that is better than any contraceptive.

(but seriously: in my opinion, raising boys non-slutty is actually counterproductive due to the fact that both genders have a fundamentally different romantic experience while growing up)

But what if you happen to sire an intelligent kid who sees what's around him? Unless you plan to homeschool/ban any internet or TV and you are his only source of information?

but seriously: in my opinion, raising boys non-slutty is actually counterproductive due to the fact that both genders have a fundamentally different romantic experience while growing up

Yes boys are taught that getting sex from girls is paramount and girls are taught that a relationship is paramount. Which leads to a lot of disharmony.

[–]KrispyMcSockingtonPillar of the community1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You really should be honest with them. Telling them girls are special just won't work. If you teach him about how to be independent and that his own desires are normal and natural, he will kost likely not stifle his own masculinity in a bid to impress someone.

Yes boys are taught that getting sex from girls is paramount and girls are taught that a relationship is paramount. Which leads to a lot of disharmony.

I don't know if this is as true or if people just put up with the fact that boys are going to be hornier overall. Trying to control anyone's sexuality doesn't work. But people have used religion and morality to do so. We have pushed both men and women to focus on things like marriage and relationships, but men still desire sex more than women. I don't think we teach boys to want sex more. It's natural for them to want it more. What we, unfortunately, do is teach them that sexual success is important to masculinity. This motivates them to do ridiculous things lile listen to bad advice and ignore their own sexuality in a bid to make women happy.

This then leads to a lot of disharmony. Either give them the sex they need so they feel successful or teach them to love themselves first and not to compromise on their own views or beliefs for anyone else. Men will do anything for a chance to get laid (RP exists for a reason) but it is ironic that those men who stand resolute and refuse to change for anyone are also more attractive.

Put that kid to work outside. Our son loves helping his dad saw up the branches in the brush pile. My dad used to make me (a girl, but whatevs) help chop wood to heat our house (and I grew up in New England, so this was no joke). It helps boys burn off energy and learn physical competencies.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Co-signed. One of my top priorities as a (future) parent is that my kids, of either gender, will love the outdoors, know how to do physical labor and won't be afraid of getting their hands dirty. I'm not raising couch potatoes.

I'd put him on a swim team.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Why do you recommend swimming?

[–]purpleppparmchair evo psych0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

just one of the things where if you wanna be very competitive, starting young helps.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

But I mean why swimming as opposed to some other sport?

[–]purpleppparmchair evo psych0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

it can save you from drowning.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Other than that, though, does it have health benefits that other sports don't have?

[–]purpleppparmchair evo psych0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No. But swimmers are usually better looking On average. Gymnasts look buff but you have to be short and there's a high risk of injury.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

bloopers don't like you micromanaging your kids.

Dont set him up for long term success please, definitely don't write it down and talk to other dads

Not just martial arts but team sports too.

Kid martial arts is more like the kids play for 40 minutes, learn one technique, then play again or fight.

Teach him not to ego lift. The science isn't clear but some individuals did it and they didn't develop problems also Olympia athletes train much harder from an earlier age.

Your muscle can't differentiate between a 45 plate and 30. So do your reps nice, controlled, good form less weight.

And can you also break down what you meant here? I didn't follow.

Myth says that it fucks with your growth and everything, some kids did it and they turned out perfectly fine.

I'd second martial arts. Definitely best way to teach your kids not to be out of control aggressive. The sense of confidence and safety they give is great.

I'd also say to teach him skills from a fairly young age. Any DIY the father is doing just have the son shadow him and teach him.I wasn't that interested as a kid but did it and can say knowing how to build things, fix things and maintain things like a car is a great life skill.

I'd also say have the kid involved in something creative, like playing a musical instrument. Most people would admit to wanting to play an instrument if for nothing but the pleasure of it, yet they never had the opportunity or were shouted at for making noise when they tried.

I think in general encourage him in anything he wants to do and try and give him the opportunities to be himself. Don't fall into the trap of thinking nothing but academics and the prospect of a great job is all that matters.

[–]darla100 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sports. I have two boys. Teachers them camaraderie, sportsmanship, healthy competition and resilience. Also, lots of hugs.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You could get that boy a golden blanket and a diamond diaper for the amount of money his mom is gonna want to spend on clothes he'll grow out of every two weeks.

[–]DashneDK2King of LBFM0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In addition to the other things which have been said (more focus on the body and physical activities - boys are very physical beings) - he should have another child soon. Having siblings is one of the best thing for a child.

99% of the RP advice on parenting here boils down to what activities should be chosen for the kid.

No parents here obviously.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No parents here obviously.

Why do you say that?

[–]yehudia points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Because parenting is much more than a few after school activities.

You'd be better off asking actual parents, than a bunch of teenagers and twenty somethings having a tough time with life, angry at the world, and completely oblivious to what their parents went through (or are still going through).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Place career before wife, girlfriend, sweetheart, etc.

Do not home school the child; begin reading as soon as possible and emphasize writing as soon as humanly possible.

Engineering, science, medicine, business are all necessary but with out the ability to communicate through writing, ideas won't get flourish.

Coloring books at an early age are wonderful.

[–]Temperfuelmma0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No TV. No internet. No smartphone. Get him lots and lots of books and magazines to read.

Also, 1000 push ups a day should be the goal but adjust it according to age.

Raise him old school.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Raise him old school.

Can you elaborate on the aspects of "old school" parenting that you think are beneficial?

[–]Temperfuelmma0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My dad was especially tough with me. Being tough with boys works, testosterone will motivate him to do even better. He would beat the shit out of me if he caught me with something or if I did something stupid, so I never did anything stupid. He held me to high levels of standard. He was never a friend, he was a parental figure I respected that showed me how to live. He always encouraged me to be able to defend myself both physically and mentally. Internet, Pop culture, skinny jeans, faggot look was always a big no-no. One of the constant fears in my life was whether I would be able to make dad proud, it was also one of my biggest motivations.

If it's a boy and you're tough with him - it works.

Get him to do things like boxing and make a goal for him like 1000 push ups a day.

Of course, I had the sweetest woman on earth as my mother to balance out my dad.

From what I've seen, and what I've read of parenting studies and what not, the name you give your kid and the whether or not you put your kid in sports are the only 2 significant impacts parents have on their children. Children are almost entirely raised by society, and their personal sensibilities along with their particular social circle.
