"something something don't take fishing advice from fish"

"watch what they do, not what they say"

You can ignore this post if you like, this is mainly for the guys who complain BPers only criticize and don't give helpful advice or want to know what I actually did. Well here's my one anecdote about my time on OK Cupid and what worked to peak my interest and get me to respond and what did not.

Disclaimer: This was way back in the day of 2008, I have no idea what OKC is like these days. Yes I'm old lol.

Age: 18

Length of time: ~3 months

Preferences: men or women 18-25, 420 friendly, no kids, no religious

Looking for: Casual Dating or hook ups only

Other stuff: can't remember

Initiating

I messaged about 10 people in all, mostly women and a few guys. Only 2 or 3 responded and they were all women.

My messages were mainly trying to strike up a conversation about something I read on their profile that we had in common: music, movies, games, fashion, whatever. If I couldn't think of anything to say I just didn't message them, even if I found them attractive.

Receiving Messages

I don't recall how many I received, several or more each day I think. 99% from men.

It would be easier to just list what I did and did not respond to here and I'll add a reason if possible.

Did not respond

  • one word messages like hey, sup or yo : lazy (these were the bulk of the messages)

  • couldn't distinguish between you're, your or their, there, they're

  • they lived too far away

  • unsolicited dick pics : pretty much virtual flashers

  • old guys (older than 25)

  • profile picture was mostly abs, sunglasses, sports type stuff or had too much Ed Hardy : wrong social group

  • essay-length autobiography telling me every detail of his life : tmi

Did respond

  • Messages where they had at least glanced at my profile to talk about something we had in common

  • Messages with jokes or funny comments

There were maybe a dozen guys who fell into the second category and chatted with a bit but I ended up rejecting anyway because

  • We had nothing in common or talking with them was boring and felt like a weird interview

  • Nothing wrong with them other than being at the wrong stage of life, they wanted to settle down and start a family and I wasn't anywhere near ready for that yet

  • Didn't drink or smoke weed (how??)

After about 3 months I was ready to call it quits with OKC when I logged in a saw the message from the guy who would become my SO. The contents are private, but I will say his message showed a playful side and sense of humor that most of the other messages had not. He didn't go overboard with details about himself, but he didn't put as little effort into it as possible either. I could tell he had at least looked at my profile.

We scheduled a date and have been together since. :)

So what do you think, does my experience help you get a better understanding of what women like or will respond to?
