Also, women did not appear to have rape fantasies before recent decades. That ties in with rape fantasies being tied to women's increasing self-autonomy and self-reliance.

I think it also ties to porn and romanticizing rape/rapey behavior in books, films etc. Our preferences grow from what we see and consume day to day life.

I once read that fetishising something can be a way to cope with something difficult you experienced or find hard to comprehend mentally. So for example, if a guy can't deal with the idea of his wife cheating and he worries about it he might fetishise it in a cuckold fantasy. A guy who has to be in charge all the time worries about losing control so he fetishises losing control. Perhaps a feminist worries about being used as a sex object and so fetishises it to make the thought more bearable.

A feminist might read a book about sexual assault and one day the thought pops into her head while she is masturbating and she enjoys it. This then creates a source of pleasure she can return to in the future.

I don't know though, i am not sure how much I really think we can analyse this stuff. I fantasize about certain things which I have no idea about where they come from.

I suspect that there is a bit of a rich tapestry involved, you might not be able to definitely pinpoint the original of a fetish without closely analysing a person .

Have you considered that they don't? That the "correlation" you are observing is the result of selection bias? Basically the idea is that people lie sometimes. Moreover, people who admit to having a certain fantasy might be more likely to admit to having another one. This would increase the apparent correlation while not accurately depicting the numbers as a whole.

Do you know if Jenny Bivona controlled for this? I don't. Abstract doesn't show, neither does this article.

Right off the bat I find it frustrating is how difficult it was to identify the actual study. There is no link to it, and they slowly reveal where and how it was performed as the article meanders on. I have no way to "vet" the article to see if it actually accurately reflects the study. Essentially we can't actually verify whether the study is being misrepresented. That said I don't think it is, since this article was co-written by Dr. Jenny Bivona (who was one of the leads on the study itself, so the article itself is just poorly written). Anyway I found the abstract if you are curious or want a few more details.

a team of researchers based at the University of North Texas and the University of Notre Dame studied 355 young women. This sample size already sucks. Basically its just college co-eds and nobody else. I confirmed this from the abstract after I found it. "Female Undergraduates". What this cannot tell us is whether or not this is a generational thing, or a college cultural thing. This study is meaningless when trying to talk about the general population of women. Sample size is too small and too narrow for that.

This scenario was derived from story lines typically found in women's romance literature, so it portrayed an erotic rape fantasy, rather than a literal portrayal of actual assault. This is going to fuck up your numbers already. I could describe eating a banana in an erotic way and it would turn someone on. That doesn't mean you all have food fetishes though! Moreover, the article doesn't describe any other methodology used by the study, so I quite frankly just don't know if its measuring anything other than an author's ability to write erotic fiction.

A notable finding is that women who REPORTED being less repressed about sex were more likely to have rape fantasies, but were also more open to fantasy in general, more likely to have consensual fantasies, and more likely to report a higher level of arousal to rape fantasies. Interestingly, the women who REPORTED having frequent rape fantasies were also likely to REPORT having fantasies about "overpowering or forcing a man to surrender sexually against his will." Here is that selection bias I was talking to. Are you sure that they were more "open to fantasy in general" or simply that they were "more likely to admit to fantasy in general". Note the use of the word reported.

Anyway I hate the article and don't feel confident using it as a source. Maybe if I could actually read the study referenced I would feel batter about it. But at this point I'm just going to answer your question with selection bias.

I think this makes sense. Rape fantasies are part of that deep CORE female sexuality that society tells you is wrong. The sex-negative bluepilled frumpy mcfrumpersons of this world want you to only get off to consensual feminist-approved porn where the man asks for consent every 3 seconds. IRL, that's not sexy, some degree of risque, boundary pushing, edgy, dangerousness (while still ultimately being consensual) is. Great sex involves some element of surrender, of untamed desire swelling and crashing through the feeble protestations of conscience and restraint.

Anywho, being open to that means being open to many other things, it's only natural that fantasies of reluctance/noncon would go both ways.
