There was a great RP post on this concept by u/LastRevision (view it here). The main point was:

There is [an] Uncanny Valley between Beta and Alpha, an uncomfortable middle point where the half-Alpha, or near-Alpha, will be perceived as an Alpha-impostor and receive intense rejection despite whatever Alpha traits he may have on his resume.

But there was something about this that didn’t quite make sense. Women who want the most alpha man they can get, who are unable to get the Alpha, will still be very hot for the second-in-command. Same goes for third-in-command, etc... So where does the Uncanny Valley open up?

The answer, it seems, has to do with how a man’s social status compares to a woman’s. If your status is perceived as higher than hers, you’re on one side of the valley – you are alpha to her. If your status is perceived as lower than hers, then you are on the other side of the valley and you are beta to her. Even if the relative difference in status is not great overall, what matters is how your status compares to hers.

This basically comes down to control in the relationship. Whoever has more social status gets to lead. If you have less status and you try to lead, you’re going to have a bad time.

Women abhor men who have less social status than them, but who pretend to have more. And they will nuclear shit test anyone who they think is pretending to be more alpha than they are.

If you are less alpha than any particular female (or all of them), then you are expected to know your role, be the beta you are, and just wait to be selected by them when and if they want you (i.e., after they hit the wall).

Women hate the idea of men learning to "pick up women". They don’t want to get tricked into sleeping with someone who is pretending to be more alpha than what he really "is". They especially don't want to throw themselves at someone who they thought was super alpha (someone they could follow and be taken care of by) only to realize that he's more beta than them (someone they have to lead and take care of).

But here’s something interesting: Women have no (theoretical) problem with genuine self improvement. I’ve talked to many women about “dating theory” and about how there’s literature out there on how men can improve their social skills and be more confident in their interactions with women. And of course they love this idea. They like the idea that men are out there learning to be more socially competent and confident. They want more men like this in the world.

However, practically, they will be very suspicious of any man who’s value is raising right before their eyes. As such, it’s usually best to just “next” someone if you find you’ve been identified (even if falsely) as beta.

All of this points to why Red Pill Theory is so effective as compared to Pick Up Theory. Pick Up Theory and Game all provide great “tips and tricks” on behaviors which are shared amongst alpha men who are good at picking up women. However, if you do not have a strong internal frame and real confidence in your self; if you are trying to emulate alpha strategies (Game) which are far beyond what suits your internal frame, then you are setting yourself up for some pretty nasty “unveilings”. Your journey from one side of the valley to the other will be one in which you are dragged down one canyon wall and up the other, leaving you bloodied, mangled and despised.

TL;DR: The uncanny valley between Alpha and Beta has to do with how your social value compares to hers. You don’t need to be the most alpha guy ever; you just need to be more alpha than her.
