A store has just opened in New York City that offered free husbands. When women go to choose a husband, they have to follow the instructions at the entrance:

The article could be kind of comforting or reassuring if the message was: "You can be alright. Whatever happens, it's not the end of the world; you can choose your attitude. You'll be alright. Shit, even if you are still working at 70 and you don't have a partner, you will still be okay."

That's an honest and positive message. And its one that old people have been telling young people for generations. Things don't work out AWESOME for everyone. But you can still be alright.

Instead they frame it as if her life is a goal. They celebrate it.

Huh... Why would the writer say something like that? Let's look at the opening sentence of her article:

If you've ever spent time wondering why you're single -- which, please, most of us have at some point -- maybe you should consider flipping your perspective.

Sounds like someone's trying to make herself feel better. (NOTE: It also sounds like someone is trying NOT to see why they're single.)

This is the whole point of the article. It's clearly identified: you are in a situation you don't like. Here's a way to look at it differently so you can feel better, without actually doing anything about it.

Anyone who links an article called "Reasons it's okay to be single" ... is trying to give themselves reasons to feel okay, because they don't feel okay.

Let me translate the article into plain English:

I'm scared of the future. I don't want to be alone. I'm in a lot of pain. I really don't like this. SOMEBODY fucking tell me it's all okay, and I'm okay!

It's Christmas Eve, so let's make fun of a 70 year old woman's looks! What is she supposed to say "yes, I'm single because I'm ugly"? Even if she did say that, it wouldn't get "printed" because people don't want to hear that, especially around the holidays. I personally hope she has some great friends, or finds someone special to spend some of her final years with.
