During a serious LTR a few years ago, I sat down and realized I had zero freedom in my life. It was work, sleep, and entertain the gf. Even vacations involved her, so despite working 60 hour weeks and COUNTING THE SECONDS to the next vacation, I couldn't enjoy it. It was just another job (basically a free travel agent).
It was like I existed simply to keep her entertained, otherwise she'd just run off and cheat with a guy that entertained her better. A slave desperate to hold onto what meager scraps landed in his direction.

You were misinformed. Lived in the area for years, and they do make a ton (high cost of living and high taxes), but that's about double what a clerk makes.
After all, $80K USD is higher than the per capita GDP of Switzerland, and a grocery store clerk is hardly above the average.
Speaking of "isolated" though, its really not. Driving from my town in Germany (Ravensburg, also tiny and not many jobs there, but you can drive elsewhere for work in no time) all the way around the Bodensee to Zurich could be done in under a couple hours. By contrast, driving from Houston to Daytona for bike week takes me an entire day of straight driving. People forget how big the US is, and its better to think of it like living in the suburbs and driving to work in the city... same concept. Live in the village, then drive to the big city.

How high? As a German citizen the state takes almost half my salary (42% or something like that). I would say that's pretty fucking high and it doesn't get much higher than this. I can't imagine it to be this bad in Swizerland. Neither Austria. A friend of mine lives in Austria. My yearly salary is 6000 euros higher than his one. Yet after taxes he gets 200 euros per month more than I do lol

The GDP per capita value doesn't compare to the avg. income since the income statistics only consider the people who's income isn't zero and the GDP per capita is the GDP divided by the total population. In a healthy economy the avg. income should be higher than the GDP per capita, indicating that the work force is getting a decent share in the profits.

Is that pre-tax or post-tax (I don't know why people even say pre-tax salary, tbh)? How does buying power compare though to the US (housing, food, entertainment)? I know, for example, the danish(?) housing market is beyond ridiculous and the same amount of money in denmark would be (comparatively) gobbled up by just having a roof over your head.

Pre everything. Taxes have to be payed separately and depend heavily on the area you live in. Also worth mentioning is the effective salary is higher than those 52k because the company you work for has to pay at least 50% towards the mandatory pension fund. So those 52k don't compare 1:1 to other salaries around the globe.
From those 52k there will be an amount deducted before pay (social security, mandatory pension and other stuff) approx. deducted 10% of total.
Mandatory health insurance, approx. 350.- per month.
Taxes for this income will range between 1700.- and 6000.- per year.
Rent between 250.- and no upper limit per month.
This is the bottom of the income range. Average income is around 80k pa.

The good thing about Switzerland is that even these remote looking areas are often quite accessible. With a little luck, the next "major" (for Swiss comparisons) city might be 10-15 minutes away by car. A lot of people here don't live where they work.

I would go to Switzerland literally just for the coffee. Every cup of coffee I had there was like heaven in a cup. Even the trains have better coffee than the "Gefarbte Wasser" ("colored water" my dad and I joked about when we visited family there) they serve here in the US.
