Around the end of last year and shortly before I came across FDS, I was seeing a guy called “Rich”. I was totally all “I’m a modern woman, I’ll split the bill” and he dumped me a few months in, when I wanted to go to an actual dinner instead of the late night bar fare or delivery we usually got, citing that “he didn’t want a girlfriend and he was a mess and he didn’t want to hurt me.” I deleted his number, discovered FDS, and moved on with my life. A couple weeks ago I was at work, in a restaurant (lv, I know) and the thought of Rich briefly crossed my mind because I knew it to be his birthday. A few minutes later I walked out of the kitchen, and guess who was seated at the booth facing the kitchen. On a date. With his girlfriend. Guess who also sent me some texts at 1am (I didn’t have his number but I had not blocked him yet) apologizing and saying he “would have gone somewhere else but it was a surprise for his birthday” and “I hope you’re doing well.” Clearly, I did not respond to him, but I must admit, it’s gotten under my skin a bit. He knew I worked there, because I started right after I started seeing him and he very much knew I worked there. Anyway, there were a million comebacks with which I could have responded, some hilariously witty and clever, some damning, some cutting, a few all of the above. But, as I was thinking of this just now, I decided I deserved the dignity of not responding to him at all. Maybe he thought I would forgive him when he apologized. Maybe he thought I would call him out. It doesn’t matter, I don’t care, I’m glad I didn’t give him the satisfaction of a reaction. Now I’m going back to not thinking of him anymore.
