The bottom line is this:

Women should use whatever color foundation they enjoy using for themselves.

Anyone who tries to criticize another woman for choosing a shade that she wouldn't choose for the other woman is just trying to force that woman to do what she wants. Bullies do that. Bullies try to tear others down.

It's important to choose what one wants for ones self. It's important for other women to support other women and to tell them: "You do you, do what you want, do what you like. It's your face and your body and you manage it just like you prefer."

I may not personally like how someone else chooses to dress, styles their hair, or applies their makeup. It doesn't matter what I like other than for myself and my boundaries!

By all that is good in this world I will cheer someone on who is happy with their own choices. That young lady looked quite happy with her choices. She has my support.

I completely respect her wanting to beautify. Tan in the sun even, if you love the sun. Women can wear loads of foundation if they feel good doing that, too. just think it doesn’t look very HV to be toting that you “love yourself” while trying to change your skin tone. I’m sure she’s not aware that there is problems with this... but the fact is she’s privileged to be able to do that, with no one batting an eyelash. I think if she has a platform to promote self love it should be genuine. It doesn’t seem genuine to be hiding your natural coloring. I am olive skinned in complexion and in the summer I do get tan even with spf... but that’s just a natural result of summer. I dunno maybe I need to shut up. The girl is beautiful, and the words are so true! It’s just this video feels uncomfortably disingenuous to me. Like she’s painting her face and singing “I love being single” all the while screaming inside that she’s not ok.

If someone stays out of the sun or lighten their foundation it’s because they’ve been told their dark skin is unattractive. There’s shame and self-hatred at play due to prejudiced and racially based systems that prefer Eurocentric features in people of color. The two aren’t the same.

If a ww chooses to darken her skin with makeup, I won’t try to stop her. It’s not worth my energy and people have the agency to make their own decisions. What I’m trying to say is darkening one’s makeup to appear more ethnic is problematic because it’s unfair to be praised for looking ethnic but being demonized for your same features as an ethnic person (for example being demonized for having naturally large lips but someone who has filler is praised for their larger lips). It’s problematic. Again I’m not telling anyone what to do, but the defensive replies I’ve received tell me that, no one is listening to the frustration woc are feeling and would rather “do why they want” than express empathy and understanding how it can be harmful.
