Nick quit law school to work at a bar. For the first seasons he had absolutely no ambition, not sure if this changed later ones. He was absolutely lazy because he and the other roommates used to trick Schmidt into doing their cooking and cleaning for him. What Nick did all day I dont know. He was also cheap. I remember he owed Winston money and he tried to act like it never happened (the worst type of friend even boyfriend really). He also never actively pursued women, just dated women in his proximity. All very low effort and somehow the writers made him the prize. Purely male fantasy really.

All my friends loved this show but I could never get into it. I remember watching the first few episodes and not laughing once, and finding all the characters annoying.

i really never understood why girls love nick miller. he’s a bum imo— a funny, loveable bum but still a bum. all the guys there are technically LVM (esp since they all watch porn) but at least schmidt has a high paying job

Some things that bug me about Nick just from memory are: refusing to hire someone to fix things properly and just halfassing it himself, grouchy old lump, doesn't take care of himself at all-- beyond appearance and exercise his diet was crap. I also hated how all his ex-gfs were "crazy", although you could say that's a problem with the plot in general and not the character.

Ughhhh, I remember the constant jokes about his terrible hygiene habits, getting nauseated from thinking about what his breath must smell like when he is kissing any woman. He didn’t even wash towels because he claims “your clean body washes the towel”, which caused Schmidt to freak out. In fact, when Schmidt gave up on cleaning the house to be a hippie, it becomes a cesspool in only a few days. He was a dirty, unambitious curmudgeon who had to be forced into directions. Jess dumped him for just that, the first time.

Honestly? Winston was the only worthy guy (Schmidt did a lot of fucked up shit) - he had his own issues with ambition and assertiveness, but he was also the purest and opted to grow. He LOVED and coveted his wife. He never put her down. He loved her strength. When she was pregnant, he got her to see how beautiful she really was and pushed her to rest and let him take care of her BECAUSE he appreciated her so much and acknowledged how grateful he was of her bringing life into the world.

I don’t like the wording of point number 1. Stating Megan Fox specifically makes it sound like just because she’s hot, she doesn’t deserve this treatment. No, no woman deserves this treatment, be it Megan Fox or an unknown less attractive woman.

With that being said, I don’t remember much of the show because I watched it pre-FDS and had no idea of LV and HV. But: he kissed Jess when she had a boyfriend if I recall. Also, when Coach suggested he lost some weight and got in better shape now that he was in a relationship with Jess, Nick was whiny and lazy.

All the men in this show lose a woman they adore because of low-value behaviors and all of them choose to grow and become much better men. Zooey Daschenel's character breaks up with Nick because he is so immature. When she goes back to him, he has written and published a book and is working on making it a series and owns the bar where he was once employed. The ensemble of friends hold each other accountable table throughout the arc of the show.

One aspect of the show I really like is the celebration of close male friendships. These guys genuinely love each other and encourage each other the be open about their emotions and to grow and improve.

There is definitely a lot of low-value behavior. But there is also a whole lot of growth away from that over the course of the series.

I don’t consider Nick a NVM. I save the NVM label for men who are abusive. I think he’s rather a LVM and that’s because he’s an alcoholic, has no ambition, treats Jess as less than, messes up all his relationships, is selfish, lazy, takes his friends for granted.
