I've come across a couple videos of young women treating male Uber drivers like absolute shit. In each video, at least one of the girls said, "But we're women!" as if to say, "You're not supposed to defend yourself against us!" (In one case she took the driver's cell phone from him and he reached out to take it back. In the other, I don't remember what he did but he didn't hit her or anything.) Now, a couple of teenaged girls attempt to carjack an immigrant Uber driver's car and in the process, accidentally kill him.

I know I can't assume they chose him because he was an Uber driver, but it's tempting to think some young women have a hypergamous hatred for male Uber drivers.

This is an especially galling story because he was just an immigrant family man trying to provide for his family by toiling away in the streets for a notoriously cold mega-corporation. He most likely came to the U.S. because he believed his children would have a better future here than in Pakistan. He felt his life's purpose was to sacrifice himself for his family. As many men do, thanklessly, every day. If there was ever a day this man hoped for more, that day was long gone by the time he took his family to the States. As he, a stranger in a strange land, stepped foot on American soil, he might have imagined what life could some day be like for his children in this big land that promised everyone a fighting chance.

This is exactly the kind of person who deserves a green card or citizenship, if he wants either. This is the person who deserves our full protection and our kindest treatment. Who else but this man is the hero of this republic? If we would live up to our promises for anyone, I think we should have done it for him. But, of course, we fucking didn't, because we're not who we say we are as a people.

Whatever factors led to the court decision (age of defendants, their apparent lack of murderous intent, their own life circumstances, calculations on the part of the defense and the prosecution as to the likelihood of success should the case go to trial, etc.), its ultimate effect is to reaffirm that men's lives don't matter. If you're poor and you decide you need to victimize a mere man to look after yourself, that's not a big deal. If you're a teenaged girl trying to establish yourself in a gang, it's okay to kill an innocent, honest, hard-working man; that's what he's there for. If you just want to feel cool and do something dangerous -- or you're just a worthless, arrogant cunt who has no regard for human life -- and you recklessly bludgeon a father with his own car, don't worry about it, the court doesn't care, nobody cares.

But if you are that innocent, hard-working father whose only happiness in life is providing for your family, be you warned here and now, your rights are a fucking joke. I'm disgusted by this country.

He shouldn't have clung on to the car, however. When a robber tries to take your shit, just let him take your shit or else you risk escalating the issue.
