For those who don’t know:

Alimony - for the comfort and benefit of the spouse

Child support - money for children’s needs.

Alimony - for the comfort and benefit of the spouse

Excuse me?! Is that a thing in america?!

[–]anomouse103 346 points347 points348 points 5 years ago (57 children) | Copy Link

Yep. If one spouse is much wealthier than the other, the other is able to claim alimony to maintain their lifestyle.

Sounds bogus but it's to stop financial abuse/dependency of the other on the rich spouse. Often tho it's used as a revenge for divorce.

[–]Gamebobbel 195 points196 points197 points 5 years ago (51 children) | Copy Link

I understand, that you gotta keep your children fed, but your spouse?! If they got a divorce, I still need to pay for THEIR life? Dafuq?

[–]Tattootempest1 points 5 years ago* [recovered] (24 children) | Copy Link

Just look at Dr. Dre's current divorce problems. His soon to be ex is claiming she needs 2 MILLLLLLLION DOLLARS A MONTH in alimony to maintain the lifestyle she has become accustomed to, despite doing nothing to earn it, unlike Jeff Bezo's wife who actually worked with him side by side to grow Amazon from a garage run operation to what it is today. She at least had a legitimate claim to alimony.

[–]StarvinMarvin00 66 points67 points68 points 5 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

2 million every MONTH? How would that even be possible? Does Dr. Dre even earn that?

[–]sneakyhog 48 points49 points50 points 5 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

And don't be surprised if I tell you that she mentioned that she needs 900k for entertainment and 20k for telephone bills and emails

Edit: Here's the link for the same

[–]StarvinMarvin00 27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How do you spend 135000 dollar on clothes and still need money die laundry haha. Maybe that's actually just money for all the extra closethouses she needs.

[–]ATaseen 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The charitable contributions part got me, she's giving his money to charity

[–]Aimin4ya 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Earn? Im not sure. But he could pay it for 20 years based on his net worth

[–]StarvinMarvin00 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Damn, that's a lot. Still sad that that would be a normal amount to pay/ask. Especially since she didn't do anything to help earn it. (As per previous comment, I actually don't know if she did anything)

[–]JoeTurner1402 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That’s what blows my mind is how ANY judge could grant these absolutely insane monthly payments. I don’t care how much money you have. Ordering someone to pay you 2 million a month just to live is fucking off the charts bonkers. In what world could you possibly justify that in your head as a judge??

“Say 5,000/mo for food, eating out at 5 star places every night, 1,000 for car payment, 4,000 for utilities, 1,000 for clothes” that comes no where near 2 million. And those are crazy generous numbers. She’s living an impossible fairy tale life. She needs to move into an apartment. Get a Toyota Prius and enjoy steak for dinner out every night. Welcome to the real world that 90% of the population doesn’t even have the luxury of having.

[–]pendulumbalance 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The judge hasn't approved the amount.

[–]Aimin4ya -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Oh it's alot. I could understand 2 million a year for doing nothing. Dre is almost a billionaire.

[–]StarvinMarvin00 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Exactly, 2 million a year is far more normal in my eyes. Especially since (I assume) alot of rich men wouldn't like their wives working since they are always busy themselves. Not trying to be sexist or predjudice.

[–]Jon_Snow_1887 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, idk why you’re getting downvoted. $2M/year seems reasonable if your husband/wife was a billionaire and you chose to be a stay at home wife/husband so that they could become said billionaire. I don’t think that very many stay at home parents provide value actually equal to $2M/year, but I think it is fair for someone who has earned as much as Dre to pay that amount to his ex-wife.

[–]negroiso 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Based on my net worth he could pay for double my current income for around 14,000 years, give or take a few.... I tried to multiply the negative that I am, but I just rounded out the first payment and gave myself a 0% net worth, then did the maths.

[–]Unwise1 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He's worth about a billion dollars. He could probably swing 2 million a month but it would certainly be noticed.

[–]ShinzoAbeFroman 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably, yes. He's reportedly worth at least $800 million and a source said up to a billion. He should have a lot of that money invested in various enterprises and probably does okay on it. But she's asking for $24 million a year right now, I imagine she'll want more than that later. That's an obscene amount to expect him to pay even if he has $800 million. It's very difficult for me to guess what he's making because I have no idea what he's into. But a broad idea might be $40 million to $80 million a year, 5% to 10%. And that's on the total. He no doubt has assets, like their houses, that don't earn income. So she's potentially asking for more than half of what he makes at this point.

Of course to all the rest of us it just seems entitled because most people, even in the western world, could make $2 million last the rest of our lives, and she wants that every month.

Ewan McGregor just got ass raped in his divorce. His ex wife has gotten some of his future earnings, granted it's from past projects. In that situation I'd rather just look at her and make whatever deal I had to in order to have a clean break. No future payments. Even if that meant giving up a larger portion of current assets.

[–]j_roe 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Depends on the lifestyle. Some women, in conversation with their spouses, put their entire professional lives on hold to raise kids and what-not, others have no talent or ability and just sit on their ass and do nothing.

Should be looked at on a case by case basis, which thankfully seems like it is.

[–]negroiso 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bro, that ain't shit. In my state, a woman got a hand written check for over 900 million dollars... cashed it, then came back to the courts saying she wanted more and that wouldn't cover her lifestyle.... 900 million bro, the check is online to view, I look at it from time to time to think A. how petty some motherfuckers are and B. what that would mean to me and about 4,000 of the closest people i may or may not know.

[–]Testament42 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that court case got ruled on recently when Dre offered 2500 a month...but the judge saw through that and then said that he only had to pay 8500. Not a MONTH...but just once

[–]lafindumonde13 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i heard he has a prenump but she is a lawyer so get a bag of popcorn and enjoy the show

[–]pousti_bitstealios -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not sure that’s true about bezos’ wife

[–]negroiso 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I saw an article that put her on Forbs top richest women, like it was some accomplishment or something she achieved in life on her own. The article is like "philanthropist and caring woman once married to Jeff Bezos who got a giant ass divorce settlement in the billions is now worth more billions"

Like duh, that's how investments and compound interest works, and with those numbers, you could just do nothing and still make metric tons of money.

Honestly, the wealth worship has got to stop.

[–]throwmeawayname 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

100% true. She worked for the company at the start, side by side with Jeff, and even landed some of the main contracts at the start of the company to get it going. She was instrumental in getting it going.

[–]fat_over_lean 20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's a very complex issue. Generally speaking, in most relationships the breadwinner has priority in career growth, which naturally builds on itself. Since divorce seems to be so common later in life when kids are older, it can mean the poorer spouse spent decades not being able to maximize their earning potential compared to the breadwinner. I see it unintentionally happening with my own wife - she has some opportunity for small salary increases or title/job changes, but it would require our family to uproot and could damage my considerably higher earning job.

However I do personally know several relationships where the wife demanded to become a stay at home mom. I also have some weather friends where the husband straight up forced the wives to become stay at home moms.

Point is, during a divorce it can be very difficult to navigate all that, so the court tends to play it a little safe and spread things around. Unfortunately emotions are high and there are quite a few people who use it as an opportunity to maximize their financial gains and even hurt their spouse. Then again there are gold diggers and all that bullshit, but I won't get into that.

[–]Gamebobbel 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What happens in case of cheating? They actually shouldn't have any right to get alimony, I mean they broke that contract right?

[–]Omsk_Camill 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In many jurisdictions you don't get alimony if you cheated on your spouse.

[–]Miserable-Lemon 27 points28 points29 points 5 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that's why western women see divorce as graduation and happily move on to marry another guy to increase their payoffs

[–]lauraklupin 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

So alimony doesn’t stop if they get remarried?! Wtf

[–]The_Endless_Waltz 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Nope. Great scam.

Oppressed btw.

[–]rapparee1916 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I feel like I want a wife who has already got 2-3 alimony cases under her belt. I could be her stay at home husband 🤔

[–]Hefty_Umpire 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They don't really work like that. They are usually only for a set amount of time (the longer you're married the longer it lasts) and it also usually ends when they get married again.

[–]lauraklupin 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow damn, that really sucks. It should! I mean...I wasn’t even sure if I was pro alimony to begin with but this just makes me not like it even more.

[–]waslookoutforchris 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Marriage has become a scam.

[–]The_Endless_Waltz 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not entirely. Im married to a pretty amazing woman who also thinks a lot of this bullshit is degenerate, so not all women are like this, just a head shaking amount.

Marriage is still an important way to establish a secure household and family, you just need to be very cautious

[–]WuntchTime_IsOver 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Depends entirely on the state.

In California and Ohio, I know alimony cuts off when you remarry. Specifically because my mom did this to my father to maximize her payments.

[–]Selor007 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure i understand, Your mom didnt marry again to maximize your fathers payment?

[–]WuntchTime_IsOver 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, she was awarded something like a ten year alimony agreement that would terminate if she re-married. She ended up with some guy roughly a year after their divorce and is still with him, but stayed unmarried specifically to collect every check possible.

[–]Selor007 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

i hope your dad gets by.

[–]heldonhammer 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

it does. What a good number of women don't do is just live with the next guy until alimony runs out.

[–]lauraklupin 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It sucks no matter what, I bet they wouldn’t be “equality” to those types of “feminists” if it was the other way around. Like Adele and her husband. If it was a lady doing it to her famous husband, we wouldn’t hear a beep about it.

[–]Cryptoporticus 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

In almost every case you can't keep collecting if you move in with a new partner, but keep believing what you want to believe I guess.

[–]Equilibriator 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

With the existing alimony you are free to look for another man who makes more instead of doing pesky things like working for a living.

[–]Cryptoporticus -5 points-4 points-3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Wait, is that bad? Sounds like a good life to me

[–]Equilibriator 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's literally the point.

Graduation is a good thing...

[–]Moonandserpent 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Check out what happened to Dave Foley from Kids in the Hall. His wife divorced him at the height of his career in the late 90s and he’s had to pay alimony based on that level of income this whole time to “maintain her lifestyle.” Canada’s got some shit laws too haha.

[–]Sketch_Sesh 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, you gotta pay for her and her new boyfriend who’s gonna be the new babby daddy for your kids

[–]CommanderCuntPunt 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In many cases a spouse makes sacrifices that does long term damage to their career.

Imagine you leave your job to take care of your kids under the agreement that your partner will provide for the family. 15 years later they leave you and suddenly not only do you not have a job but you’re bordering on unemployable because your field has advanced 15 years.

It doesn’t always get used properly, but there are valid reasons for it to exist.

[–]Tattootempest1 points 5 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Of course it only is accepted when it goes one way. When Gwen Stefani got divorced and her husband won alimony in their divorce case a bunch of articles came out against it, claiming that isn't what women meant when they said they wanted equality, proving equality isn't what they really want at all.

[–]dystopianview 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Happening right now with Adele as well.

[–]severalghostsataBBQ 14 points15 points16 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]JustForFun____ 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Comeonjeffrey0193 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

And the argument that gets them the alimony is usually, “i’m used to a certain lifestyle”. So the guy is forced to live in a 1 bedroom apartment and the wife gets the house (source: all 3 of my uncles pay alimony)

Sugar Ray Leonard (professional boxer) got divorced from his wife a while ago. When they did, his wife said wanted his championship belts and FUCKING GOT THEM!!!!

[–]stunna_cal 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can confirm. I bought the belt off eBay from her for $300 after the settlement.

[–]codifier 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow, that seems inexpensive for what it was.

Did you offer to sell back to him for what you paid?

[–]Gamebobbel 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

his wife said wanted his championship belts and FUCKING GOT THEM!!!!

Ex-fucking-CUSE ME?! Breadwinner or not, those belts are no fucking paychecks! What reason could there be, to give her the belts?

[–]Comeonjeffrey0193 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The same way women get the rest of the mans things in court. “I need them for the children”

Not even kidding. That was her reasoning for why she needed the belts.

[–]BraidedSilver 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It all started when women were expected to get married, have kids and take care of the house for the rest of their lifes, which often meant if they wanted to get divorced, they didn’t have an education or previous work experience to rely on. With alimony, women (and men, in case the woman is the breadwinner, but that wasn’t really a thing back then) could choose to get divorced without ending up on the street or homeless instead of staying with an abusive man. It was to secure the woman’s standard of life, that they had gotten while being married. The times may have changed and women are free to make a life of their own but this lip gem of the past hasn’t been updated much, other than becoming a common thing for men to gain as well. It’s also a thing here in Scandinavia at least, probably also most of Europe.

[–]TheyKilledKennyAgain 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Pretty sure someone dr.dre was with is looking for 2 million a month(?)

[–]Raddz5000 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If your fear this or you suspect your soon-to-be partner of just marrying you for your money, you can have them sign a prenuptial agreement. A prenup basically means that if the marriage fails, each partner will take away only the assets agreed upon in the document. So if you include “no alimony” then they won’t get alimony. Prenups can also include property, stock assets, etc. They may back out of the marriage if you say you want a prenup if they’re just marrying you for the money, cuz then they won’t get anything out of the marriage monetary wise.

[–]waslookoutforchris 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most prenups are unenforceable and one of the first things a judge in a divorce case does is throw it out.

[–]Kidel_Spro 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's the same here in France...

[–]Qtips_ 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol america is all kind of fucked up

[–]mississippi_dan 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In most couples, one will have to further their carer at the expense of the other spouse. It could be because one has to stay home with the kids or two people cant accept promotions that move them to different cities. One spouse wil inevitably have to take the back seat to the other.

Alimony is considered compensation to make the spouse whole; where they would have been.

It is logical for most families where one spouse makes six figures. It doesnt make sense when we talk about two celebrities who both had licrative careers. Or gold digging floosies who were never capable of making that money on their own.

[–]jeremybryce 174 points175 points176 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Men judge themselves by the size of their wallets

Bitch, so do women!

And when they bring up his divorce he’s cool about it. But as soon as he mentions she’s on alimony and they end the interview...

Men judge themselves by the size of their wallets

Bitch, so do women!

It's worse than that even. A man may judge himself by the size of his wallet but its uncommon for a man to judge other men for the size of theirs. I've been on weeks long trips with guys and had no idea they were millionaires or damn near homeless- it was just irrelevant. That is rarely the case with women- knowing a man's financials was goals 1, 2 and 3 of my female roommates dating strategy.

[–]BitemeToo 16 points17 points18 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I always heard the word alimony in American movies and tv shows, but I always just assumed it was child support. What a fucking joke! That shit needs to stop

[–]4_string_troubador 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

There's a difference between alimony and child support. Child support is supposed to be the non-custodial parent's share of the cost of raising the child. It stops when the kid turns 18. Alimony is spousal support for a grown human being. It doesn't stop until the ex gets remarried

[–]Lui_Le_Diamond 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's fucking dumb. If I divorce someone I'm bit paying them shit.

[–]biggunsg0b00m 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, you have to wonder how it came about.. I think it's only in America.

[–]4_string_troubador 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's a holdover from when married women were mostly housewives without a lot of marketable skills. If they got divorced it would be difficult for them to earn even a basic living. Now that most women have an income separate from their husband, it's mostly done out of spite

[–]biggunsg0b00m 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's an outdated law that obviously needs to be changed or removed. Why hasn't that happened?

[–]4_string_troubador 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just like McKenzie Bezos is not the richest women on earth now. For what? She didnt invent shit. She didnt do shit. She just got her reward for being a woman. Such bullshit.

[–]LimitedC0nnection 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

well yes, and no. Jeff Bezos said himself there would be no Amazon if it wasn't for her. She was with the company from basically the get go if i recall correctly.

Use another of a bazillion other examples where mens lives were ruined and women got rich cus of alimony

[–]JimmyPellen 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

As much as I hate Jeff Bezos, she helped him create Amazon. He’s admitted to it too. Maybe she doesn’t deserve half his wealth, but she sacrificed just as much as he did to make Amazon where it is today.

That's a Fox feminist. Picking a loud mouthed, probably eccentric Karen. Instead of a rational human being.

[–]Leroyjankins8989 20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Point me towards a rational feminist?

The only one that I have ever heard basically rejects feminism now, can’t remember her name and I don’t think that counts anyway.

[–]LordGalen 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Point me towards a rational feminist?

I mean, if you go back to pre-1980, there's lots of them. They wanted reasonable things, just wanted to be treated fairly, and weren't fucking nuts. After that, though....

[–]TaffySebastian 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I totally agree but in mexico feminist groups are still going against some terrible realities, there are a big number of them who are talking bs but most of them actually are fighting against some awful things so I respect the reals ones quite a bit, the US, I can only blame universities in there, they have fucked up too many young minds beyond repair, I am actually scarred of what might happen if they dont stop them sooner than later.

[–]Leroyjankins8989 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes I agree with that, I’m asking for the a present day, logical feminist.

[–]roundandroundwego123 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ok, I'm not up to date on the crazies. I do know that there are huge disadvanteges to being a woman in a lot of places on this earth. So there is a place for females to watch and demand equality of rights and possibilities.

[–]Leroyjankins8989 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, I should have been more clear and said based on the US society and culture.

I’d need to do a little more digging but someone that considers themselves a libertarian but wrote in bernie sanders in 2016 doesn’t seem logical to me.

Although she does seem to be critical of many tenets of 4th wave feminism, which is more of what my comment was pointed at.

Edit: she always signed a Petition supporting NAMBLA. Yea, that’s strikes 2 and 3 my dude.

Edit2; the more I read about her the more difficult it is I would need a long form conversation with her to actually understand her point of view on politics.

Love how she had her head up her ass when she was talking shit to men and the second he brings up alimony, she retreats to a Whiney tone and defensively screams “i HaVe 3 cHiLdReN!” Trying to pull the child card to her defense. Funny how fast she went to get so defensive

So sick of this repost.

It's a bit. Fox brings them on to do a little theater for their core audience. It's basically MRA fanfic for Fox viewers.

[–]I_am_not_your_parent 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not from the States, so honestly curious question here: why are you down-voted for saying this?

[–]lucia-pacciola -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Probably some combination of people who don't like:

  • complaints about reposts

  • being told it's PPD theater and not actual PPD

  • being told it's for Fox's target audience

  • being told they're Fox's target audience

That's not being owned at all and not being dependent on a mans money that is 3 children that that dude helped put into the earth and he needs to be responsible for as well. That's teaching him responsibility for actions something everyone should understand. Not sure how this is interpreted that way

[–]Q_from_Quanon 43 points44 points45 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i’m not sure you know the difference between alimony and child support

[–]AjaxOutlaw 34 points35 points36 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I believe it’s attacking her idea that she “doesn’t need to depend on a man” yet she takes money from a man that makes her life easier. She’s independent, but funded

The thing is that It isn’t since alimony is for the spouse and child support is for the children
