Just so you all know, the data showing women do more work than men (when you factor in housework etc.) is complete bunkum. There's no reliable evidence for it, and the best studies show it absolutely isn't true.

EDIT: this is a review of the book which is the source of his final claim (that women overestimate their amount of work per week by several hours more than men). It essentially repeats the claim, but adds further credence to it. The book is Robinson and Godfrey "Time for Life" and is one of the most thorough and painstakingly researched studies into how Americans use their time:

Not sure how they defined it here, but 'domestic duties' often doesn't include things like outdoor maintenance (lawns and gutters), construction, home repair, tech maintenance, car repair and the like. These are jobs that require specialized knowledge and are more dangerous.

Also, and this is controversial, but maybe if the husband works a physically demanding job that pays more than the wife's job, he should do less of the domestic duties. Ultimately, that's really up to the couple to work out, and not an ideologically biased think tank.

This is hugely discriminatory towards gay male couples, as they would make less money. Insanely beneficial to lesbian couples. And for straight couples it would be advantageous for the woman to become the breadwinner and for the male to become the housewife in place. Except businesses would be encouraged to hire men because they can work longer, for less. So women would need to work and businesses would not want to hire them. Anyone see a problem here?

The real answer lies in a culture change, men picking up the slack at home and women paying extra with the additional money they can make by working more hours.

This should be a slow tradeoff as trust is built between the sexes. Except you have women who still want to be taken care of, women who want every privilege available now, and men who want to loaf around at home because all the extra hours and effort they put in on the job.

This isn't going to happen this generation as most of us weren't trained as children to have these perceptions of women handling work/finance and men developed to have skills in the home.

I don't buy the "unpaid domestic work" argument. There is no law that says a woman has to clean the house. There is no branch of the police that will arrest a woman for not cooking dinner. Women are perfectly capable of not doing laundry, not doing the dishes, not cooking or cleaning or arranging the little decorative soap bars for the guest bathroom. Women choose to do these things and it's time we all face the reality of that. No healthy relationship is going to crumble if a woman chooses not to be Martha Stewart; and if she is ever pushed to do domestic duties, she should take it as a very clear sign that she needs out of that relationship.

Women do this domestic work because it makes them happy. To have an ordered home, to have a clean nest, to have everything set just so with matching tablecloths and throw pillows.

If domestic work is really that bad, just stop fucking doing it.

The research talks about the limit on how many hours each gender can work without harming their mental health, with a consideration of factors outside of just work hours that could influence that. I don't see any suggestion that these limits represent how work hours should be distributed in the original study. Direct quote from the study abstract: "We find gendered workhour-health limits (43.5 for men, 38 for women) which widen further once differences in resources on and off the job are considered. Only when time is ‘unencumbered’ and similar time constraints and contexts are assumed, do gender gaps narrow and thresholds approximate the 48-h limit."
