There is currently a heavily upvoted post on menslib that is trying to tell us that false rape accusations are over hyped and the numbers aren't that high really.

So let's take a closer look:

How Many False Rape Accusations are there? (https://www.nsvrc.org/sites/default/files/Publications_NSVRC_Overview_False-Reporting.pdf)[Most experts agree that false rape accusations make the total of 2-10% of the total accusations of rape.]

The paper linked starts with the same appeal to emotion (women are raped so much and it's so bad) to frame the discussion. If you can bring yourself to recover from the horror of the plight of women for one second, you can sober up and actually look at what is being said: This paper, the very first thing sited, clearly draws a distinction between false reports and reports with insufficient evidence:

The FBI and IACP have issued guidelines that exclude certain factors, by themselves, from constituting a false report (Lisak et al., 2010, p. 1320). These include: Insufficient evidence to proceed to prosecution ; Delayed reporting ; Victims deciding not to cooperate with investigators ; Inconsistencies in victim statement

The paper concludes that the number of "false reports" (i.e. excluding the above) is 2-10%. And the menslib women-respecter uses that as evidence that false rape accusations are 2-10%.

This 2-10% number is only the minimum possible number of false reports because an unknown number of cases not proven may also be false!

Sorry but if you seriously just count every unproven case as true, then you are full of shit.

Oh but we're not done. You see, poster is really trying to teach us a lesson...

Now I know that 2-10% is alot and enough to give anyone pause considering how epidemic sexual assault is. But consider a few things. .. 1 in 6 of women report they have been sexually assaulted.

There's that appeal to emotions again. "Your problems might seem bad even after I've done my best to hide them and make them look small, but look at the plight of women!"

Why? I thought it wasn't a competition?

Only a 1/3rd of sexual assaults are reported to police. So at its 2-10% of 33%

Just because a rape accusation wasn't made to the police, does not make it automatically true!

How many people Falsely Accused of Rape actually go to Jail?

As if jail is the only thing a man has to worry about when he's accused of rape. That's menslib empathy for men in all its glory. You realize men have frequently been killed after an accusation before any police even got involved? Not a problem for Menslib.

And throwing this into the picture of the total of the numbers of rape really proves how rare false rape Convictions are.

Here's the only honest thing you should say about the number of false rape accusations: We don't know the number, we just know it's somewhere between that 2-10% and the total number of rape accusations minus those definitively proven true. I won't make a guesstimate and neither should anyone else. And, most importantly, don't take the lowest (or highest) theoretically possible number and just claim that to be the actual number. Ironically, even you don't think that number is low or you wouldn't have seen the necessity to go on about the plight of women.

And the post is followed with countless comments applauding it and expressing relief that it's really not such a concern. Of course, there are also plenty of deleted comments but that's menslib for you.
