Fascinating how when he goes on about all the evidence being weak and femnism being that powerful and convincing that he does kot really put out mich more than "it is other men, not women who police male gender roles".

Congratulation, that is actually something most MRAs will happily tell you applied to both women and men. Policing of gender roles will be often predominantly done by other people of said gender, what a big surprise.

Also, I have not really seen any serious MRA arguing about the evils of metrosexuality. ...which is not really a "new" thing either when you look at history and the rise and decline of various styles and movements concerned with a more appearance conscious style of manliness.

I started skimming through that article pretty soon, but it is just so pathetically superficial.

Oh, also, I frankly see hardly any MRA being all that unaware of the situation of gay men, just to speak from the one field where I have personal experience. Most MRAs are quite respectful and certainly seem to be more aware of gay male issues than the average straight man, at least that is my own impression.

[+]mcdermottj[S] -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You skimmed through the article, yet it's the article that's superficial. Oh, the irony.

[–]Cant_Ban_All_MRAs 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I read the whole thing, and /u/MalusMalorum is correct - pathetically superficial.

His biggest point for being an MRA is something about Tim Allen playing a fool and making men look bad. There is paragraph after paragraph about Edwin's mixed up political stances while he was young, but nothing else about men's rights.

Then comes the feminist conversion experience leading him away from the darkness. Edwin figures out that men enforce male gender roles (not a surprise to a real MRA), that gay or non-white men experience the world differently than straight white men (not a surprise to anyone). And something stupid about metrosexuals.

Edwin appears to be a superficial idiot who will be much happier following the feminist mainstream; having to think critically and enduring the possibilities of being mistaken are now things of the past.

[–]redditorriot 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've read it fully. It's a pretty straightforward, biased and shallow hit piece.

Please publish more, these always help our cause.

[–]MalusMalorum 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I skimmed because I frankly did not care for the parts that did not actually give a reason for why MRA arguments were false / bad and feminism was so much more correct.

Would you want to illuminate me about any solid argument I actually missed out on?

[–]civilsaint 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm truly sorry all you see in MRA is negativity, rage, hate and bitterness. The one thing that drew me to this group was that these things are not tolerated and the trolls are not fed. Apparently, I am having a much different experience than you.

You discuss the turning point in your conversion from MRA to feminism is when a feminist told you that all of the evils that concerned you were caused by 'the patriarchy'. Do you realize that ALL HUMANS have a propensity toward evil that we, as a society, strive daily to overcome. 'The matriarchy' is no more humane than the so-called 'patriarchy'. Women can be just as vicious and cruel. The only difference between the sexes in that regard is that men have more physical strength, so are prone to outward forms of aggression while women are prone to being more calculating and manipulative. But the desire to harm others is equal in both sexes.

It was assumed before that females of primate species were passive, until Jane Goodall caught two female chimpanzees killing and eating the offspring of others in an apparent effort to protect their dominion within the group. This was believed to be isolated, but later was found to not be.

The point is it is dangerous to equate a word like 'feminism' with 'equality', given that the word itself gives dominance to one gender over the other.

And I don't buy the notion that feminism fights for minorities. Minority men are usually the ones most affected by the presumption of guilt in domestic violence issues. First, they are less likely to afford to defend themselves, and second, juries have a bias against minority men. They are therefore more likely to be falsely convicted.

I would just recommend to keep your mind open and question all claims. Personally, I am for equality. I am not in a Men's Rights forum to argue that men should have privilege. I want to see true equality for the genders.

I thought of myself as a feminist for years until I had a crash with reality that I was always seen as the enemy, either a rapist or potential rapist, or rapist sympathizer, or spy for the patriarchy by any member of the third wave feminist movement with whom I disagreed. There were many abusive feminists that had no problem bullying me.

Best of luck in your journey.

Holy crap, he's attacking your comment on another forum. Then they downvote you when you go in to defend yourself. How fucking cowardly can they get?

His prepective on Tool Time is wrong, yes Tim had a successful show, but he supported his wife while she went to school to get her degree, and theN when she got a really great job opportunity in another city, Tim sacrificed his entire career for hers, ending the show Tool Time (admittedly he hated the new owners) and he ended up moving to another city. He even moved the house, because it was what SHE wanted.

Also you should tell people in the article that you searched under every rock in the MRM to find this guy, people deserve to know that this article is just propaganda.

Maybe a more interesting question would be how many MRAs are former Feminists (puts hand up).

[–]civilsaint 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hand up.

I used to believe the line about feminism being about equality. Then i realized that just like with Communism, some people are more equal than others.

This is the same Edwin Hodge: http://freethoughtblogs.com/crommunist/2012/07/09/introducing-edwin-hodge/

In this article, he states that he had only just gotten involved with feminism in 2012, directly contradicting his claims to you. I don't think Hodge was ever an MRA.

[–]redditorriot 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Holy shit, that blog is a rabbit hole. Check out this giant strawman and empathy-free nonsense, incredible for a person claiming that his feminism is THE lens and that he cares anything for men. I would go as far to say as the guy has allowed himself to and bathes in ideology over reason and compassion:

http://archive.is/Pik9X

OP found someone who clearly detests the MRM, which I guess is what he was looking for.

[–]DevilishRogue 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sorry, John, but either you've been lied to or made this up.

I always believed it was women and feminism putting men in this box. But these feminist texts not only validated the crisis of masculinity, they pointed out men are the biggest policers of masculinity. Men beat each other down for being “girly,” for liking sewing or baking, for crying.

Any MRA knows both how male emotion is policed (hint, it's not by men any where near as much as by women) and why it is policed (because men are disposable and not entitled to the same feelings as women).

MRAs and feminists were acknowledging the same problems, but the MRAs weren’t locating the right cause. The feminists pointed out, “No, actually this is rooted in the same patriarchal institutions that are harming women.” It was subtle but profound.

Patriarchy hurts men too? Are you serious?

And feminism showed that men of color and queer men experience the world differently than the straight white men who dominate MRA groups and assume all men are fundamentally the same and like them.

Intersectionality? Ignoring shared common experience?

I realized all the arguments about male oppression I had bought into were weak. And all the evidence I needed was in feminism.

Except anyone who understands them knows that it is the feminist arguments that are weak (other than gilded cage theory) and that male oppression is rampant.

My transformation didn’t happen overnight, though. There wasn’t really an “Aha!” moment, but more of a progression. I had to deconstruct all the MRA beliefs I had internalized.

Your interview 'subject' hadn't internalised any MRA beliefs because that isn't how MRA works. That's how feminism works, stifling dissent and censoring argument. MRA is the opposite, welcoming debate and not internalising beliefs so that argument can become stronger rather than needing to be sheltered from criticism to withstand debate.

At one point, I made the argument that metrosexualism was oppressive to men, that it was an attempt to feminize us because we were too hairy; because we weren’t good enough as we were.

You'll have to point me to any post here that argues such a banal point as I've never heard of such a ridiculous argument.

Despite my best efforts, I’m an idealist, and I honestly, truly believe sociology can be an activist discipline.

Where you get course credit for writing to your state representative about the importance of access to abortion how can you think sociology is anything other than an activist discipline?

I appreciate you posting it here, OP delivers and all that, but either you are full of shit or Edwin Hodge is.

[–]mikesteane 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you have to prefix a particular statement with "I honestly, truly believe...", you probably go round saying whatever is convenient to you most of the time.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you're comparing Spreading Misandry to "white supremacist literature," it's safe to say you've never read Spreading Misandry, which is one of the most tame and academically-written books in men's issues.

I question just about everything this guy is saying.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this whole article is the same old line feminists use when we ask what exactly has their "gender equality group" been doing for men.

"if men stop behaving badly and defer to feminism than all your problems will go away".

meanwhile they just sit on their hands, attacking masculinity and claiming that theyre helping. mras call it trickle down gender equality.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sounds like the average fundie, "I was an atheist before I saw the light and joined the Westboro Baptist Church!"

[–]Ingsoc226 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The reason discussion of men's issues needs to take place independently of feminism is because feminism has developed into a hate movement. Websites like Jezebel routinely produce articles that sneer with laughter over male victims of extreme domestic violence, the movement is steeped in transphobia and anti-male bigotry and seeks to advance social attitudes in which men and boys are treated with contempt because of their gender, they want to bully and discriminate against boys in education and normalise the idea in schools that their point's of view are worthless simply because they are male.

Feminists have selfishly redefined equality in the Orwellian sense. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg for example has said that she wants every single judge on the supreme court to be a woman. You would expect an equality movement to be opposed to outright declarations of supremacism, but not so: it features regularly in feminist media.

The reason I oppose feminism is because it's not just about the elimination of oppression and misogyny (which I support) but because it's an ideology like Marxism that constitutes a total worldview and which is genuinely misandric in a way that goes far beyond railing against injustice. It's not an equality movement by any definition.

[–]Impacatus 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

But these feminist texts not only validated the crisis of masculinity, they pointed out men are the biggest policers of masculinity. Men beat each other down for being “girly,” for liking sewing or baking, for crying. For being “faggots.” “You gotta man up.” “You can’t be a pussy, right?”

...

At one point, I made the argument that metrosexualism was oppressive to men, that it was an attempt to feminize us because we were too hairy; because we weren’t good enough as we were. One of my female peers turned to me, lifted up her skirt and said, “I shave my legs every day. Don’t talk to me about the cosmetics industry oppressing men.”

So, let me get this straight. When men, and only men are looked down on for exhibiting feminine behavior, it's misogyny. When women and men are both looked down on for exhibiting a masculine feature, it's... still misogyny.

Granted, it is pretty silly to consider a fashion trend oppression, but it's the kind of thing feminists do all the time.

The point is, feminism fails as a tool of analysis precisely because it holds on to the narrative so strongly. This is one of many examples of two or more contradictory pieces of evidence held up in support of the same conclusion.

I would like to ask the interviewee: If you acknowledge that the status quo isn't good for men, and you believe that feminism is unambiguously good for men, then why do you think there's an anti-feminist movement? Is it just because none of us have looked up the dictionary definition of "feminism"?

He was never a men's rights activist. He was a feeble-minded, fawning mangina, who thought he had read something that would appeal to his liberal-minded female colleagues, then put it down as soon as he realized they disapproved.

And nothing changed.

... the name calling is really uncalled for... it only makes the sub look bad.

[–]TheDude41 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't be a feeble-minded, fawning mangina.

The guy worked in a bookstore, offered up a book he liked to a few chicks who worked in a bookstore, or in a women's studies course, then ultimately tucked his balls between his legs after he received a couple dour looks.

[–]lostapwbm 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I'm a journalist at MEL, a new men's lifestyle publication, and I'd like to interview a reformed MRA. Specifically, I'd like to hear about how he became a men's rights activist and how evolved out of it.

If you or anyone you know would be interested in speaking with me, please either private message here or email me at [email protected].

Glad to see you found someone stupid enough to interview. Or you just made some shit up. Either way.

I would write these pro-men’s rights arguments that I thought made sense, but my instructors would say, “This is a tautology.”

checks the CV

Yeah, this guy was such an MRA that he produced no scholarship relating to men's rights, but he does publish a lot of shit about how Christian Identity racism is due to "masculinity."

You fellas really need to try harder.

[–]Spoonwood 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here's the CV: https://uvic.academia.edu/EdwinHodge

[–]thrway_1000 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yea, I call fake. This seems completely fabricated to make MRAs look bad and feminism look like it's good.

[–]Spoonwood 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's really laughable. I mean the piece starts out saying that he found Spreading Misandry in the popular books section of a book store. Seriously, think about how out of touch with reality one would have to be to believe that such a book would get placed in a popular books section. Look at how few reviews it has on Amazon also.

[+]mcdermottj[S] -8 points-7 points-6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for reading!

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

Wait a minute. You were the guy who was asking about "reformed" MRA's a few weeks back. Is this you shilling yourself?

[–]mcdermottj[S] -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, I thought you guys would like to read what I came up with. Hope you enjoyed it.

[–]Impacatus 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

May I ask what your goal for this article is? Are you trying to inform, persuade, draw controversy, or something else?

[+]mcdermottj[S] -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

There was no goal other than to try to tell the story of one man's intellectual journey. Glean from it what you will.

[–]Impacatus 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

You went around asking not for a man, but for a "reformed MRA". It's not very believable to claim you had no agenda when choosing to write this article.

I just feel like your article might have had more value if you tried to create a dialogue rather than forcing a narrative.

[+]mcdermottj[S] -8 points-7 points-6 points 10 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

You wouldn't consider this here to be a dialogue?

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You specifically looked for a "reformed MRA". By asking for that, you imply that being an MRA is wrong and MRAs should be somehow "fixed". You didn't ask for a "former MRA", you asked for a "reformed MRA" which means you must have some sort of anti-MRM agenda that you are trying to push.

[–]Impacatus 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Not really. I consider this stirring up controversy. Your actions seem designed to make this community feel attacked and draw up a defensive reaction. In that, you have succeeded.

However, I feel like you could have done a lot more to add to the discussion. If, for instance, you had hammered out some specific disagreements the interviewee has with the MRM, that could have formed the basis of a discussion. If you had gone into the project with an open mind and wrote about differing perspectives on the issues that the MRM cares about, that could have formed the basis of a discussion.

As it is, it essentially comes off as "At first I thought Group A was right and Group B was wrong, but then I thought Group B was right and Group A was wrong." Not much to go on.

[–]mcdermottj[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Well, for the record, he does still care about issues facing men. He's devoted his life to that discipline, in fact.

And I think the idea of men being the biggest policers of masculinity is an incredibly specific example.

[–]Impacatus 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Well, for the record, he does still care about issues facing men. He's devoted his life to that discipline, in fact.

Perhaps, next time, you could devote more space in the article to that. What he's doing might be more interesting than whose flag he's doing it under.

And I think the idea of men being the biggest policers of masculinity is an incredibly specific example.

I don't consider the idea of women being the biggest policers of masculinity to be a defining belief of the MRM. I'm not sure if it's a belief at all, in fact. I think most MRAs would agree that masculinity is policed mainly by men, just as femininity is policed mainly by women. Which is not to say that either one is exclusively policed by one gender.

What does this even have to do with anything? Why is it so important that we find someone to blame for the problems of men?

[–]Arby01 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What he's doing might be more interesting than whose flag he's doing it under.

this would be the thing that interests me. For all the clamoring of "feminists help men too", there isn't much evidence of it. So, /u/mcdermottj, what's he doing to help men?

[–]mcdermottj[S] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Isn't that integral to fixing those problems?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well, for the record, he does still care about issues facing men.

It's a shame you couldn't be bothered to actually write that. So much for journalistic integrity, huh? Clickthroughs and ad revenues are all that matters these days I guess.

[–]mcdermottj[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's in the piece.

"My focus is still on men (that much hasn’t changed since my MRA days), but my work recognizes that the single most powerful set of tools for understanding the issues men face can be found in feminist analysis."

So much for reading before you formulate an opinion, huh?

[–]levelate 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And I think the idea of men being the biggest policers of masculinity

you are insane, or incredibly stupid if you think this is true.

[–]mcdermottj[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks!

[–]Spoonwood 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, for the record, he does still care about issues facing men. He's devoted his life to that discipline, in fact.

No, he hasn't devoted his life to that discipline. In other words to men's issues which they face as men. Look, I'll quote from his article:

I read a little bit of The Myth of Male Power by Warren Farrell...

You can't just read a little bit of the Myth of Male Power if you're anything close to a serious scholar in men's issues. Honestly, one might even say that if a person who has read just a little bit of the Myth of Male Power, then such a person at best is not much of an MRA, and probably more accurately doesn't even understand MRA ideas to begin with.

Contrast that with him reading textbooks:

I looked at the syllabus and saw Masculinities and The Men and the Boys by Raewyn Connell, both about gender from the perspective of men’s lived experiences. I just thought, Well, shit.

I read them [emphasis added] and it didn’t take long for my men’s rights beliefs to start falling away.

He didn't read a little bit of them, he read those books as one would for a course of study on those books.

A person simply can't consider different books equally without having looked at both books with the same level of analysis. He hasn't done that.

It's obvious that you began with an agenda and it is disingenuous for you to claim that your only desire was to simply "tell the story of one man's intellectual journey."

Oh no no. You wanted to tell a very specific kind of tale. And you are happy to ignore many different tales in order to get the one you wanted.

I enjoyed the read, and saw some minor parallels to my journey of self-realization - though I never really bought into MRA ideology like this guy did.

I had the benefit of having taking some courses on feminist theory prior to being exposed to MRA ideology, so I never became anti-feminist. I just see MRAs as men looking at men's issues in the same way that feminists look at women's issues. They use a lot of the same tools of analysis.

I am pretty firmly in the "feminists and the MRM are two sides to the same coin" camp.

Bit of a non-sequitur there. Many of us non-feminists here have studied or read extensively on feminism and come to wholly different conclusions.

The 'two side of the same coin' stuff is a tired cliche by feminists like yourself trying to retain some semblance of relevance for feminism, which has nothing to do with equality.

[–]sillymod 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Much like atheists, a lot of anti-feminists are informed on the issues.

How? We use facts; they use lies. We use logic; they use propaganda. We use unbiased academically sound studies; they use feminist works. We are egalitarian; they are not. We promote free speech; they oppose it. There is so little in common. Kind of important distinctions, don't ya think?

Then you are pretty firmly uninformed on the issues at hand.

I'm sorry Edwin, but - perhaps as you'd expect - I don't find this article of yours terribly convincing. Perhaps it's just that you seem to have read only one book slightly challenging of feminist ideology, or that you trot-out a lot of very tired-old feminist cliches (i.e. that men are taught to be stoic and unemotional brutes, er, except for Shakespeare, Picasso, and millions of other examples of men who expressed emotions really well...?)

I think perhaps feminism is the right home for you. You seem to be more comfortable trotting-out a tired-old dogma than critically questioning it.

I also note that like many feminists you're unable to avoid using a snarky, insulting tone when discussing feminism with anyone who you think may not adhere to you doctrine.

This sounds like a very impressionable young man read one book and fell hard for it, then took a gender studies class and fell hard for it.

I read them and it didn’t take long for my men’s rights beliefs to start falling away. They didn’t stand up to all the empirical evidence I was finally reading — research that was informed by feminist theory and offered actual solutions.

What is conspicuously absent here is any clue as to what "empirical evidence" he is talking about. I don't see any reason to believe that this guy wouldn't just fall headlong into any philosophy or world view he reads about. Again, this strikes me as a collection of anecdotes from a very highly impressionable person. The way this is all written makes it look like nothing more than erotic fiction for people who dislike MRAs.

I wonder whether this dude is proclaiming feminism to further his career. It's very difficult for man with a PhD in Sociology to find employment in Canada because of affirmative action instituted by feminists. Colleges are overwhelmingly feminist and certainly aren't going to hire heretics.

Regardless, feminism does not have answers for men, or even care about male problems, especially in Canada. Feminism may not be the root of all gender problems, but it continually demonizes and silences men and belittles their problems. And how is a continuing the 50 year feminist monopoly of the gender discussion in academia good for men or sociology?

I was in the self-help section “facing” our most popular books — arranging them so their covers, and not their spines, faced outward — when I noticed the title Spreading Misandry: The Teaching of Contempt for Men in Popular Culture.

laughing. For all of it's merits, Spreading Misandry is a little known academic volume. Even though published more than 10 years ago now, it has a mere 31 reviews on Amazon.com Plenty of college textbooks have more reviews... say those on calculus... and plenty of people prefer to read anything else than a textbook. It is scarcely believable that this book would lie in the "most popular book section" at any book store.

I had never seen anything that said I — a white, heterosexual male — was actually the one being discriminated against.

I don't believe that most MRAs think of white, heterosexual males as "the ones" getting discriminated against. It isn't like the sentencing length for white men is longer than the sentencing length for black men. It isn't like white men get profiled more than black men by the police. At least, not in most parts of America and Canada. This guy doesn't sound like he ever was an MRA.

Looking back, I realize Home Improvement was actually reproducing 1950s gender dynamics.

In the 1950s we had a show called Father Knows Best. The father in Home Improvement is an idiot who pretty much knows worst.

Spreading Misandry was a recruitment piece and I was an easy target.

Neither author of that book is a men's rights activist. Paul Nathanson has said that he just does scholarship.

I looked at the syllabus and saw Masculinities and The Men and the Boys by Raewyn Connell, both about gender from the perspective of men’s lived experiences. I just thought, Well, shit.

I read them and it didn’t take long for my men’s rights beliefs to start falling away.

Then clearly his beliefs were not about men's rights. Because, rights are NOT about 'lived experiences'.

Reading feminist textbooks made you decide that men don't need rights. K.

Another great part is

feminist theory. actual solutions.

Looked at the site, they are running a bunch of anti-male articles pretending to be chic. 1 article, maybe, a dozen? Its a trend. Trying to make its name in the SJW cycles. The old trick of targeting a core demographic and writing stories to confirm their biases to help sell their site. Even checked to see how mel social network push, its big, all targeting feminists, sjw and far left readers.

I’ve been dating the same woman since 2004,

Wonder how much she hates having sex with him (if any)... or how many other guys she's banging....

[–]Pyehole 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Don't be an asshole. That's not helpful.

[–]Rasalom72 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Says you... plenty of guys need someone to call them out on their shit, and point out the painfully obvious before it sinks in.

Besides, one man's asshole is another man's "say it like it is" brother. Keep your opinions to yourself. They're like assholes... everyone's got one.

[–]Impacatus 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

The implication of your statement is that his worth as a human being is somehow related to his sex appeal to a woman.

[–]Rasalom72 -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Hate to break it to you... but his worth as a man is directly related to his ability to pass on his genetic material. And unless he's a rapist, that's not going to happen if he's not having sex.

[–]Impacatus 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Hate to break it to you... but his worth as a man is directly related to his ability to pass on his genetic material.

Says who?

[–]Rasalom72 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Evolution.

If you don't pass on your genetic material, you are a failed evolutionary path. You don't contribute to the future success of the human race, and therefor have no worth.

[–]Impacatus 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Who says that one's worth is dictated by evolution? By that logic, a queen ant might have far more worth than any human being.

[–]Rasalom72 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Except evolution has placed mankind at the top of the ladder. We are the apex predators on the planet. Evolution has placed us there. Therefore, mankind is the pinnacle of evolution as a species.

[–]Impacatus 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What are you talking about? There's no ladder in evolution. Natural selection only concerns which genes survive and which go extinct. There is more than one ecological niche a species can occupy to pass on its genes. Predators are not intrinsically better at it than prey.

If you're alive, you're no more or less evolved than any other living thing on the planet.

[–]Pyehole 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

This isn't calling somebody on their shit. This is making an unfounded ad hominem attack.

You are a presenting a perfect example of why people in the MRA community have a hard time being taken seriously outside of the hugbox. You aren't offering any substance, you are just shitting on people.

[–]Rasalom72 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or it could be that all the molly coddling that guys like you do isn't helpful to men in general. This isn't a safe space. Men can and should be called to account for their actions.

As for ad hominem attacks... I never said a single thing about HIM... I said something about HER. If he's a pussy, she won't respect him, and she won't have sex with him (other then token pity sex).

[–]Pyehole 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men can and should be called to account for their actions.

What action is it you are calling him to account for?

I never said a single thing about HIM... I said something about HER

Yeah, you made an ad hominem attack on her and by extension his relationship and his worth as a man.

If he's a pussy, she won't respect him, and she won't have sex with him (other then token pity sex).

This isn't the red pill, I think you are in the wrong sub.

Right now 1% of the community is doing 99% of the work and everyone else is just a spectator,

You know what, this is a stupid complaint. Yeah, it's true that a very small minority are actually doing anything "in RL".

You know what else is true? At the moment, doing something is, for all of those on the sidelines, personal and professional suicide. Your expectations are immature and short sighted. There are a ton more people discussing the things that cross the MR board - young men are starting these conversations, women now draw back from just silencing the points and harassing others. It's growing. It's still in it's infancy and it would still be easy for someone to lose their livelihood if they expressed these views.

It's progressing like it has to progress. Is it going to solve anything tomorrow - nope. Is it going to bring relief to any guy currently in a custody suit - nope. Too late for them. This isn't going to help most men alive today. It might get to a point where it can help some in the future. Or hey, maybe even before I die. That would be cool.

Yes, you are correct. It's an unprincipled choice. To choose not to stand up for the belief you hold is cowardly. To choose not to put yourself out there because of fear of the consequences when you are confident your belief is right, and what you want in the world is right is weak.

The consequences of 'taking a lead' aren't as serious as the soldiers in any war, but they are not trivial either. Most of the people here aren't here on principle - they are here because they have been injured and experienced the injustice. To expect them to pile on further injustice in seeking to right the wrongs of the world is a high expectation. It might be right, but it is without empathy.

Groups coming at it from outside the lived experience of injustice actually have less risk so the comparison is poor. The youth trying to organize and create MR societies are a better comparison. Yes, it is right to stand up.
