Cool, thanks for sharing. We definitely need more posts like this here, about doing away with gender stereotypes that hold men and boys down.

[+][deleted] -26 points-25 points-24 points 10 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I don't see how having to wear a suit and tie "holds men down." however I do see how having to wear a dress would hold women down.

dress codes are good, otherwise you have kids coming to school with the underwear baggy pants looking like thugs.

if these kids want to "express themselves" they have plenty of time after school and weekends to look like a bunch of losers. school is for learning.

[–]AloysiusC 34 points35 points36 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except the boy's dresscode doesn't allow them to be free of it outside of school hours since they have to cut their hair short which means they have to wear it 24/7.

And why is one holding a person down and not the other exactly?

[+][deleted] -11 points-10 points-9 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

a dress limits body movement, how you can stand/sit/walk/climb/play for fear of showing panties.

[–]SchalaZeal01 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link

how you can stand/sit/walk/climb/play for fear of showing panties

What's so different between showing panties, a swimsuit, or a gymnastic leotard such that the latter are all fine but panties are perverted to see?

Note that gymnastic leotards can be worn for competitions, where men will watch. Unlike beaches or pools where everyone is a bit underdressed. Just sounds like prudery to me to be all self-conscious about pantie shots but fine with showing leotards, for the same women. Be self-conscious when you go commando.

A dress doesn't limit body movement much, unless you bought it because you like tight-wrapping of thighs (not all dresses made that way, of course). And it can be shorter than slacks without being too casual (ie can have a knee length or shorter dress and be considered formal, or professional) - meaning you suffocate less in summer.

And lastly, while suits are all clones of one another with little variation, there is a metric ton of variation in dresses, from those tightly-wrapped drapes I don't like (I think they call them cocktail dresses), to bridesmaid dresses, and Victorian-like dresses (without the obligatory corset). And the lighter summer dresses. Not to mention colors, lengths of hem, fabrics, decorations. Plunging neckline, shoulder straps, strapless, puffy shoulders, sleeves.

so if you're wearing your school dress and suddenly someone says hey let's play football or soccer you'll immediately join? I don't think you will, but I do know that most guys would.

yeah. the clothes have been worn and need to be washed anyway. a little dirt isn't going to change anything.

[–]SchalaZeal01 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If I felt like playing sports, I wouldn't change to play sports, yes. I'd feel alright wearing that unless there was a sport uniform and this was organized sport (ie team vs team, not spontaneous shit).

[+][deleted] -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you ever did it wearing a dress, you would only have done it once. your legs and calves would get wrecked and I'm sure a guy or two would have pulled at the dress to hold you back.

[–]SchalaZeal01 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just like guys with long hair playing soccer get their hair pulled in pro leagues, right?

[–]LedZeppelin1602 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That makes sense. Can't speak for this school but my old one and my nephews one allows trousers for girls

[–]chocoboat 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm fine with dress codes, I'm not fine with unequal dress codes, or a dress code that requires you to follow it when you're outside of school.

[–]justcantwin1111 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

so just black in other words. yup i sure will call you out!

[–]AloysiusC 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Thx for sharing. I applaud those boys. In principal, I don't actually mind school uniforms. What I mind is them being implemented unfairly or forcing kids into tradcon roles. So I suggest a uniform policy that actually does justice to the term uniform by making it "uniform". Duh! Or if one MUST have male/female coded uniforms, at least allow people a choice.

And no doubt there will be some idiot tradcons (I'm sorry about that tautology) who see that idea as the beginning of the end of the world.

[–]AloysiusC 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In fact there's a case to be made for giving kids a choice to dress up as the other sex. You can learn a great deal about people if you mimic them. And as kids they can look convincing which is far more difficult later in life. I think both boys and girls would learn a lot about the sexes and how privilege and objectification really work if they slipped into the opposite role for a bit. There's a good chance that will undo some of the feminist brainwashing that objectification is so terrible and negative.

[–]chocoboat 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There's nothing wrong with having one uniform for boys and one uniform for girls.

Each student can choose which one they want to wear, and each uniform should be equally professional looking (no short skirts and wide array of exceptions for the girls, while the boys have to wear a full suit everyday and must have short hair).

[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's nothing wrong with having one uniform for boys and one uniform for girls.

except that it's sexist.

What's wrong with defining two uniforms and letting the students choose which to wear. "go head a wear a skirt dave, nobody cares"

[–]NWOslave -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Tradcons think everyone should grow up and stop acting like spoiled infants. So slap on a diaper and you can crap in your frilly panties, that'll show them bad old tradcons. The media will tell you you're expressing your individuality. You'll be the edgiest of all the progressives.

[–]AloysiusC 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

Tradcons think everyone should grow up and stop acting like spoiled infants.

So a 2 month old infant should stop acting like an infant. That's what tradcons think. Good to know.

[–]NWOslave -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Oh that's so clever. Just admit you have a sexual fetish for little boys in dresses. What other reason could there be for your devotion to having little boys dress up as little girls?

[–]AloysiusC 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What other reason could there be for your devotion to having little boys dress up as little girls?

Notice how trolls like this are only concerned with boys deviating from their gender roles? Girls dressing like boys doesn't even show up on this imbecile's radar. That, right there, is why tradcons will never be on men's side. To them, men had better know their place and do what they're told.

[–]NWOslave -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You didn't answer the question of why you promote little boys in dresses.

[–]AloysiusC 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you genuinely want to know, I gave one reason here and another, more important one, is freedom to choose and fairness. Since you clearly don't mind girls dressing like boys, the unfairness is my problem.

[–]marauderp 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

[–]Lethn 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I know a bit about how this originally got started or at least in a small way. It was an article I saw a long while back about a boy who was annoyed about having to wear trousers during summer and had look through the school's uniform policy and noticed that they mentioned nothing about the gender when it came to dresses so he wore a dress so he didn't have to deal with wearing trousers when it was hot.

Looks like feminists have gone and taken this idea and turned it into a identity politics war, I actually think school uniforms are utterly pointless but it's one of those things where you know that feminists aren't doing it for the sake of men or letting students wear what they want they're just doing it to push their agenda.

In fact! Damn I'm good! Found the original articles of the person who pretty much did it first.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationnews/8504552/Boy-wears-skirt-to-school-in-protest-against-discrimination.html

"He also addressed 1,368 pupils at morning assembly wearing the black skirt, which boys are permitted to wear due to a loophole in the policy."

[–]redgreenyellowblu 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This isn't a men's rights issue. The justification being used here to protest the code is feminism.Admittedly, the short hair requirement does go overboard and was asking to be disputed, since it goes beyond what the student does during school hours.

Dress codes should be sensible but high school kids will use the rhetoric of feminism to insist girls should be able to wear yoga shorts or a thong to class. At some point, the adults need the authority to tell them they don't get to wear whatever the hell they want.

[–]Kuramo[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

It's so interesting this kind of topics are not discussed here. I'm guessing why?

[–]RedPresident 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One reason is because school dress codes in the news usually come up because a girl complains she can't wear spaghetti straps or short shorts to school. The sex/gender equality issue there is that in most cases, the dress code for boys is already way more restrictive than the one for girls, and the rule being challenged has a little more sense to it than no long hair on boys.

[–]AloysiusC 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They do come up some times. I appreciate it when they do.

[–]Afrobean 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago* (14 children) | Copy Link

A lot of people just use this subreddit almost exclusively to complain about and generalize women. This sort of poster also likes to blame all of their problems on feminism, which is also grossly generalized against and irrationally hated.

Also, the problem of men being not-allowed to wear dresses, for example, is not a point of contention for many MRAs. They care not about those kinds of inequalities, because they don't even want to wear a dress anyway and they're too busy yelling about how every woman who accuses someone of rape is just lying to get attention. They're like this most likely because they see dresses as something exclusively for women and any man who would do a thing that is "supposed" to be for women is seen as a lesser man. This is just misogyny though, seeing women as lower than men, and also seeing feminine men as lesser too because they're more "like women". You'll see this logic all over the place, not just in cesspits where douchebag idiots share tips on how to trick women into sleeping with them, but even in mainstream communities too. This is a VERY important men's rights issue and it's tied into a LOT of problems men face (specifically the irrational hatred of male expressions of "femininity"), but many "men's rights activists" just don't care. This type of common idiot wouldn't want to venerate these boys for fighting for equality, because this type of common idiot doesn't actually want gender equality.

School dress codes are also usually the ire of young girls rather than young boys. Probably due to the fact that boys, in my experience, tend to stick a lot harder to what society tells them they must wear. Early socialization of the effect I mentioned in the previous paragraph. I once made the "mistake" of wearing shorts to elementary school that were "too short" and was mocked mercilessly for LITERALLY YEARS over it, so it shouldn't be surprising that boys fall in line. The schools also make rules specifically to "catch" girls wearing what is socially considered normal and would otherwise not receive any noteworthy attention, and then hinder these young girl's education for no good reason because the adults judged them as being "too sexy" or something. MRAs tend to not care about women's issues, and school dress codes are PERCEIVED as hurting women more, so MRAs don't care. If more young boys were having their educations hurt due to them wearing "inappropriate" clothing that actually isn't, this might be seen as more of a "men's issue" and less of a "women's issue". In reality, this is just another example of a double-edged sword that cuts both ways; we're ALL getting cut up by ridiculous fashion norms being forced on us.

[–]192873982 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What a bunch of shit you talk...

School dresscodes usually apply to men and women, most often they are more strict to men. So why would being okay with dresscodes be misogynic.

Dresscodes limit freedom. Schools wouldn't limit freedom, if there was no problem in the first place.

And yes, most MRAs and also most men don't want to wear a dress, why is that wrong?

Also we are not "too busy yelling about how every woman who accuses someone of rape is just lying to get attention", because that's not what we do. We just defend "innocent until proven guilty" and we perceive that a lot of rape accusations are to get attention. "A lot" doesn't mean all, it doesn't even mean most.

If you did a survey here, about wether it's okay for men to wear dresses, people will most likely tell you "do whatever you want, it's none of my business". That doesn't mean dress codes are wrong. If you want' to know if dresscodes in specific contexts are wrong, think about what's the reason for them and then think about a better solution. If you don't find one, dresscodes are justified.

Also if a person doesn't like to see men in womens' clothes, that doesn't mean he/she values women less than men at all. This devaluation of the female would only be the case if a person valued anyone less that wears female clothing. But this is not the case, since we value women in female clothing usually higher. But it depends on the context of course, different contexts have different optimal clothing sometimes different for men and women according to society. A female soldier would be silly to wear a dress in combat. To wear a bikini as a woman in professional context would be silly as well, so would be wearing trunks as a man in the same context.

So what's the reason for dresscodes? In school it is to not irritate other pupils from learning. Just as you get complaints if you click your ballpen all the time, it's logical to get complaints for you clothing too.

School clothing is not for expressing yourself, it's for not irritating other students, because they deserve the opportunity to concentrate and learn something. "Express" yourself via your clothing outside of school, please.

I once made the "mistake" of wearing shorts to elementary school that were "too short" and was mocked mercilessly for LITERALLY YEARS over it

That's because kids are cruel and because you reacted wrong.

Whatever you do, you'll only get mocked for a very short time if you react properly. Children or grown ups, it doesn't really matter, mock other persons only, if the reaction is angry (and by that funny). But it's not your fault that you didn't know it back then, so we should probably teach our children on how to handle bullying.

MRAs tend to not care about women's issues

MRAs do care, the MRM doesn't.

[–]SchalaZeal01 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If you want' to know if dresscodes in specific contexts are wrong, think about what's the reason for them and then think about a better solution. If you don't find one, dresscodes are justified.

Dress codes can be fine, gender-specificness about them is not. Requiring short hair and no jewelry for men for no reason than it being a norm is just stupid.

School clothing is not for expressing yourself, it's for not irritating other students, because they deserve the opportunity to concentrate and learn something. "Express" yourself via your clothing outside of school, please.

Hair length is not something you can 'do' on your own time. My hair is tailbone length. That took between 5 and 6 years to fully grow. Nobody can shave their hair to collar length and then take 5 years on their way home to get long hair for vacations/holidays/evenings.

[–]192873982 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dress codes can be fine, gender-specificness about them is not.

I think it is. If society is built in a way that make some clothing only irritating on men or only irritating on women, that makes non-gender-neutral dresscodes okay for me. I don't think your opinion on this is naturally wrong, but I think the one who should decide such a thing is the community in a democratic way.

Requiring short hair and no jewelry for men for no reason than it being a norm is just stupid

I agree with you on this one. Hair dresscodes should only be allowed if they don't limit how you can wear your hair in private. That means requiring you to have a certain hairstyle is okay, but requiring you to have a certain cut is certainly wrong. It's only natural that people who work in a kitchen should have to tie their hair, to not have hair in the food. The only reason for people to be required a certain cut, is for safety purposes, e.g. in the army when you have to be able to wear a NBC mask, which prevents you from having a beard.

TLDR: Dress codes should not limit you outside of where the dresscodes are enforced. Also dress codes should only exist in very limited contexts, e.g. casinos or schools, never in the public. Otherwise dresscodes should be allowed.

[–]SchalaZeal01 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

They're like this most likely because they see dresses as something exclusively for women and any man who would do a thing that is "supposed" to be for women is seen as a lesser man.

He's seen as lesser because he's gender-nonconforming. Not because it's feminine. Gender-nonconforming women are also seen as a lesser woman. Just ask butch women how much male privilege they get.

This is just misogyny though, seeing women as lower than men, and also seeing feminine men as lesser too because they're more "like women".

Then you should tell feminism to stop doing it. They're the no 1 source saying feminine stuff is inferior, that women should go for male-dominated domains to get respect. Or that being a SAHM/marriage is slavery.

And about not wanting to wear a dress. Until dresses are made flattering to a male physique, and not the source of derision, well yeah I can understand men not jumping at the chance to be laughed at. If that perception changed, however, there might be more men interested. I doubt MRAs alone can effect that society-scale change though.

[–]AloysiusC 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He's seen as lesser because he's gender-nonconforming. Not because it's feminine.

This is one of the most annoying myths feminists have spread. If femininity was seen as lesser, then women wouldn't be trying so hard to look feminine. In fact I have the impression that more men deviate from masculinity than women do from femininity.

[–]RobDog101 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is one reason, I think, so many gay men have a problem with feminism. Its explanation of anti-gay views as a mere side effect of misogyny is utter nonsense. To imply the hatred of gay men is comparable to and even incidental compared to the supposed hatred of women is utterly ignorant on so many level it isn't worth my time to go into right now. Let's just say there aren't many places where gay women are murdered for their sexuality as a matter of course.

[–]AloysiusC 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes and not only is comparing it to women preposterous but also lesbians. Like you said in your last sentence - and historically too.

[–]Afrobean 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

People posting in good faith are required by law to fully read replies? I'm not allowed to start to read a reply, think "this person is obviously just dumb" and not bother reading the rest of it? What? This is not something I did exclusively for this post, I do it for every post every where. When you have strong opinions and express yourself freely, a lot of people that respond to you are idiots or people just looking for something to be argumentative about. No constructive conversation ever comes from these types of people in all of my years of experience on the Internet, so I never engage them regardless of topic. I drop my honest opinion, respond to any replies that seem constructive, intelligent, especially well-written, and/or conducive to interesting conversation, and ignore any other replies that don't seem to have anything worthwhile to offer.

[–]RobDog101 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, they're meant to be looking for an open, honest discussion. You basically admit to categorically dismissing all replies here (except this one evidently). If you think they were all idiotic, that's fine, but fuck off. You aren't open to any information you will find on this sub, and there is no point to your being here.

[–]BaldursShield 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It's not that these topics aren't interesting or popular, it's merely that in general more important and pressing issues are discussed: circumcision, domestic violence, etc.

[–]NWOslave -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

This topic is neither interesting nor popular, in fact it's not even a topic at all. It's just a bunch of useful idiots obeying their media masters. Get a gold star on your skirt for walking lock step with your masters wishes.

This kind of issue comes up regularly actually. I think you would have an issue with it if you had waist length hair and were told to cut it short.

The way I see it it's yet another symptom of the same issue that's causing all the other symptoms. As such, pointing out any instance of it, is useful.

At least this had bent to the boys protesting for the boys, but like I would tell the girls the dress will be with you from now on. College, work, and other private places will define how they want you to dress to fit their image or safety of their property.

College, work, and other private places will define how they want you to dress to fit their image or safety of their property.

And barring safety, they shouldn't have the right to require normed clothing. Except in fashion and sex industry. There is no reason to require short hair on men in an office, except "I'm ultra conservative and I don't like non-conformism", not a valid reason.

Where's the shaming?

Shouldn't they be suggesting that boys with long hair and piercings are a sexual distraction to the girls?

Come on school board get your shit together.

Actually, feminism has little to do with it.

The Supreme Court ruled that dress codes can't be enforced unless in cases where it's distracting to other students, so whenever female violate the code the school's response is always that they are sexually distracting to male students - which is utter bullshit. Boys are thrown under a bus to enforce a school's dress code policy. It's only when roles are reversed do we get to see the truer picture.

It reminds me of an article I read on violent women - without masculinity to blame they had to find the real factors that make people violent.

Entitled brats.

Follow the schhol dress code. This is the easiest mode you will ever have for the rest of your life.

[–]chocoboat 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

A reasonable dress code is fine. A stupid dress code that allows girls to do whatever but boys are heavily restricted? Fuck that.

[–]unklestinky 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If this was concerning clothing I would agree. However since this article specifically referenced length of hair and earrings I don't agree with the schools position. The policy should be identical for both males and females.

So what you're saying is, when they graduate they should all just off themselves, because life will never be that easy again? Please don't ever actually tell a young person that the part of their life they are living now is the easiest they will ever have it.

The truth sucks my friend.

[–]RedPresident 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Don't be so miopic. It's not the truth for everybody. Some of this kids are being abused at home, some of them hate being in doors all day, some of them want to travel and are tired of going up in Clovis, home of the biggest rodeo in the state. Not to mention ALL of them are dealing with puberty. Then you've got parents and teachers putting pressure on them that everything they do at 14 is going to matter for the rest of their life, that they HAVE to go to college and not a trade school unless they are a loser and on and on.

Do they pay rent or taxes? No. Is doing those things harder than trying to get through a school system that teaches you how to take tests instead of anything worth learning, at a place where bullying is savage, and all while your own body can't decide what its doing that day, brain chemistry included? Not by a long shot.

The point is, true for some or not, it is absolutely not true for all people. Even if it was true, you don't ever tell somebody having a hard time that it only gets harder, that's very irresponsible and, given that one has no way of knowing if it'll be true, smacks of small mindedness.

[–]unklestinky -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You spelled myopic wrong. Anyway I was being facetious.

[–]RedPresident -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a word I'll probably never get right :(

I agree with dress codes, because all it will take is for a girl, at the prom, dressed as a boy ,to wander off with a group of boys, and get ganged raped. Will this be her fault, no! People this will evetually go public, because I fear that this has already happened. But for the sake of "gender neutral" or "progressive",adults that know better allow CHILDREN to dictate what they can wear. Remember that the dress code was initiated because of the bullying ,from the well dressed,to the unkept children.Nothing in life is neutral, and in the name of gender neutrality, these feminists, with the agenda to emasculate, and make boys effiminate, are forever trying to get boys to look and act like girls. This is because the VAST MAJORITY OF WOMEN DON'T KNOW HOW TO HANDLE MEN/BOYS. Look at the black community, where the women have been primarily raising the boys, for the last 50 years. Is the black community better off for this, HE'LL NO! We do however have an explosion in homosexuals (lesiban, gays),and at time you couldn't tell wrather a black person were male, female or a drag. But hey gender does T have a role, and therefore gender isn't important. As of today, not the first male has given birth, and not the first female, fought to be the heavy weight boxing champ. Hell women CA t even qualify to compete with the men on the GOLF course. So the solution was to lessen the length of the courses. They tried that, and the women still couldn't qualify;what did happen was some very sub part males qualified ahead of the females. Who am I, to tell nature what's what. Instead these people are teaching the middle school children that there are in fact 6 genders, how that happened I have no clue! My personal favorite is the military lightening the training, in order to get more women on the front lines. So society would wrath error have under trained troops, vs fully trained troops. Side note, we always had women on the front lines, it's these lazy ones who want to sit in the SAFE ZONE, and get paid like they're on the front lines. And we're trying to figure out what's wrong with the youth, the problem lies with the adults, with agendas, pulling on the heart string of people through their kids. I suggest that people who don't view this as a serious topic, should really look at this and say to themselves; how can I use this to manipulate parents. Why is it that if a girl woke up and decided, not to do her hair, she can put on a cap. But us PRIVILEGED BOYS, M.U.S.T. BE WELL GROOMED AT ALL TIMES.

Yeah down vote. Fairness bad. No like. They take my banana.

[+][deleted] -9 points-8 points-7 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, males dressing like females isnt distracting at all.. and even if those kids arent just being trolls.. if they legitimately want to dress like females.. then they have a mental disorder.

[–]SchalaZeal01 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People wearing tunics in medieval times before pants were something else than a cavalry garment must've had a mental disorder, right? Dress-like garments are just simpler to design. A long top is considered one, already.

[–]AloysiusC 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you're distracted by males dressing like females (curiously the other way round doesn't bother you), then that's your problem and it's up to you, not everyone else, to develop the discipline to get over it.

As you can tell this site has nothing to do with any rights what so ever. It's a cross between a feminist site and a pedophile site. There's nothing leftists love more than little boys in dresses.
