Any other pro-choice guys out there hear, "My body, my choice" and think it's a poor slogan since it implies the father is irrelevant?

“but comparing women's incarceration rate to that for men paints a falsely optimistic picture.” Women face gender-specific brutality in prisons, including rape by prison authorities, shackling during labor, and inferior medical care.

Are you fucking kidding me?

Is that a Hitler quote?

[–]moskova 19 points20 points21 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The term 'Feminazi' has never been so apt!

[–]Krissam 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

inferior medical care.

This is the part that ground my gears, how the fuck is that a gendered issue?

[–]Saerain 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I assumed they were implying that the medical care offered to female inmates is inferior to that offered to male inmates, as unlikely as that seems. But they only link to this article as a source, and it doesn't seem to say anything to support that.

[–]icefire54 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just read that whole article. There was nothing about women having it worse. This is another common feminist tactic to cite things that don't support your position and pretend it does. Other feminists then cite it over and over again to make it look like it is very well supported. It's known as the woozle effect.

evidently they don't give many pads or extra toilet paper to the female inmates. My GF was talking about that just the other day....

You'd be surprised what an inmate can turn into a shank.

[–]avatarvszelda 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

just saying what I heard. Makes no sense to me either....

[–]tio1w 44 points45 points46 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If it's something bad and it doesn't happen to women, does it happen at all?

[–]MenandBoysareGood 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's really interesting and predictive that the rape here is by "prison authorities". First, it infers that the authorities are male and secondly that the woman are innocent victims who do not go around raping other women in prison (let us push: Male = evil, Female = wonderful)

[–]CelestialDos 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not like say HALF of sexual misconduct cases regarding prisons involve female employees.

[–]Lurker_IV 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women's incarceration is a terrible travesty as long as you don't compare it to anything else at all.

Or in other words as long as you lack any kind of perspective women's suffering is the worst.

[–]Greg_W_Allan 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Studies from the US Department of Justice suggest that male prisoners are most likely to be physically or sexually abused by staff whilst with female prisoners it's primarily other inmates.

[–]mwobuddy 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same shit men deal with.

[–]wisty 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When it happens to women it's gendered rape, gendered shackling, and gendered inferior medical care.

Because men are the default gender.

edit: forgot the sarcasm tag

[–]Jasperkr672 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Never mind the fact that the vast majority of victims of staff sexual misconduct in juvenile facilities (96+%) in the US are male.

[–][deleted] 62 points63 points64 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The last sentence:

“Within the U.S., it is commonly noted that women are incarcerated far less frequently than men,” the study concludes, “but comparing women's incarceration rate to that for men paints a falsely optimistic picture.” Women face gender-specific brutality in prisons, including rape by prison authorities, shackling during labor, and inferior medical care. Interpretation This study also found that men were incarcerated more frequently and for longer but we are not going to say this because it defeats the purpose of our biased report so lets find something that may affect females. Rape, but rape is far worse in male prisons! It makes me so angry when journalists try to be clever with words to evade the obvious.

[–]bertreapot 39 points40 points41 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Do they mean actual rape? If so I would like to see examples. What is probably more common is consensual sex between staff and inmates, which legally isn't consensual, because of prisoners' status as wards.

The same thing happens between male inmates and female prison staff, though of course no one calls it rape in that situation.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Believe me they make these statements misleading on purpose.

[–]bertreapot 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

OK I read the linked rape article: two female inmates at Riker's island are accusing one guard of raping them. If we know anything about feminist statistics, if 2 women out of 206,000 prisoners claim they've been raped by guards, that means 40,000 women have actually been raped by guards.

[–]Leinadro 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nah they would use the "1 in 4...." stat. Meaning out of 206,000 prisoners 52,500 were raped.

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Another one to add to the ever less defined meaning of "rape". I wonder what the end point of moving the goalpost is? Perhaps when a man says or does anything a woman doesn't like thats "rape".

[–]bertreapot 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, legally speaking, a ward cannot consent to sex with a jailer. And we don't know the details of this case. If it was consensual sex in jail, then the article is being misleading, as we all know there is a difference between the two.

[–]Niketi 39 points40 points41 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I was wondering when this idea of just closing down women's prisons and awarding them community service for whatever crimes they commit would come to America. It's the final evolution of the pussy pass.

[–]callmeChopSaw 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What. The. Actual. Shitting. Fuck.

I'm now sick to my stomach. Do they not think this mint work for men too? Muhhhh genderz, fucking shit.

[–]FeierInMeinHose 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So, say hypothetically that I'm a man but I really want to go kill a bunch of people. All I have to do is get sex reassignment surgery, for free because that's covered under the NHS, and then I'll just be able to murder as many people as I want a never have to face anything more than community service?

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"gender-specific brutality in prisons, including rape by prison authorities"

wow, prison rape is a "gender-specific brutality" for women? Stupid Level 9000.

[–]ramot1 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wonder what percentage of guards are women. Doesn't matter, women can't rape other women. /s

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Why isn't it a stronger talking point around these parts that 93% of our prison population is male?

[–]Keiichi81 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because our opposition doesn't care. They'd just look at that and say, "All it shows is that men are more likely to commit crimes and violence."

Of course, use the same excuse when talking about the percentage of prison inmates who are black and suddenly you're a racist shitlord.

[–]Fedupandlost 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So true it's painful.

[–]StopTop 18 points19 points20 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

There are way too many women and men in our prison system.

This is a real problem that fuck heads like to divide us over. First race now gender.

It's a fucked up problem that all sexes and races should be angry about. The People as a whole.

I'm so tired of this division and how easily it works for those in power.

[–]occupythekitchen 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

divide and conquer works really well. Just look how many people want hilary to win because shes a woman maintaining the status quot instead of supporting the person who would put things in a new ground shaking up the status quot

[–]icefire54 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Warren Farrell showed that women are treated much better than men in prison. This article is complete garbage. I am so baffled at the stupid that I am at a loss for words.

[–]Juan_Golt 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

More evidence that you can fabricate a grievance about anything. The goal posts for equality will always move.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

According to feminists, this should be great news. The low incarceration rate of women and their shorter sentences is a result of patriarchy and sexism, because women are viewed as weak.

If that's changing, then we're becoming more equal! Yay!

[–]TheDude41 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women face gender-specific brutality in prisons, including rape by prison authorities, shackling during labor, and inferior medical care.

Shackling during medical procedures, rape by prison authorities, and inferior medical care all happen more often to male prisoners than female prisoners.

Keep whining about it though. White women: the most spoiled overall demographic of human beings on the face of the planet.

[–]LineChatter[S] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She has every right to bring attention to the plight of women in prison, but it's just the way she dismisses the male prison problem that rubbed me the wrong way. She could have said something like, "A lot has been written about the number of men in prison but not a lot of attention is given to women, and problems include x, y, and z." Instead she chose the typical "women are victims here and let's not bother talking about men because women have it much worse" which doesn't translate well in a prison article.

[–]manofsea 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Is the high female incarceration numbers a issue yes, but it is a huge issue for both genders and race.

[–]Unenjoyed 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The editors at Slate.com seem clueless.

[–]elmariachi304 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They're not clueless, they know their audience and are trying to make money giving these idiots what they want. That doesn't make the clueless

[–]Unenjoyed 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So are you saying that the editors at slate.com intentionally choose to disregard data and information in order to pursue and anti-male agenda?

Because I'm trying to assume no negative intent, and you seem to be saying something else.

Slate.com?

"Women face gender-specific brutality in prisons, including rape by prison authorities, shackling during labor, and inferior medical care."

All these are issues that male prisoners face just as often as females. These are not "gender specific brutalities".

[–]gmcalabr 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The quote "Federal pound me in thw ass prison" was not referring to a womens prison.

[–]MRMRising 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Women face gender-specific brutality in prisons, including rape by prison authorities, shackling during labor, and inferior medical care.

Gender Specific? For fuck sake, men get raped in prison all of the time. As for shackling, well male prisoners have been shackled for centuries, so how is that gender specific? I am willing to bet the average female prisoner gets better treatment than the average male prisoner.

[–]LineChatter[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think her view is that men get raped by other prisoners but women are raped by those in authority and that's the worst kind of rape...so women have it worse since the type of rape is worse. If not that then probably something equally convoluted.

[–]Kiwi150 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So, rate of incarceration is approaching equality and this is bad?

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Make the prisons co-ed and maybe the numbers will even out.

[+]rustybuckets -20 points-19 points-18 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's an article about female incarceration rates you dipshit.
