Disgusts me the attitude some people have. "Better safe than sorry"... yeah, if it negatively labels MEN as vile pedophiles, murderers, rapists, etc.

Thankfully most people aren't having it. It's just sad those same people would never treat women like child murderers to be "better safe than sorry".

a quick scan of the NSW police press office reveals that there have been a couple of these child approach incidents. they seem quite common but I only found one which appeared to be sexual. there was one case where a girl was asked to get in the car and a case of exposure. but seriously, the way these things are reported you'd thing every guy in the country was doing something bad and must be dealt with by sending all the boys to anti-rape sex ed classes and by locking up all the men and brainwashing them into thinking all men are toxic.

The scary thing is, the guy asking for directions has no clue the police are looking for him...why would he?. .. If this was in the U.S. they would've found him, sent a team of 30 SWAT officers to his house at 3:00am, brake down his door, throw flash gernades throughout the house, kill his dog and then ask him why he asked the girl for directions. After that ordeal he would be charged with solicitation of a minor, register as a sex offender and spend the rest of his life in jail, all for asking where he could get gas.

This is so fucking wrong. Some guy asked a girl for directions and then leaves. How the holy fuck is this a criminal incident? You can't even ask directions from a child in public without being assumed to be a pedo or kidnapper? If this was a woman it would not even be a thing. If you read this statement from the NSW police, you'll notice it was not the child who was concerned by the man but an unrelated woman who witnessed nothing bad happen and decided to make an issue out of nothing because of a gender difference. Are there details / part of the story missing, or is the mother just an idiot?

The entire story seems to go:

Girl is about to cross an intersection.
Guy walks up and asks her which way X is.
She either tells him or doesn't know (it doesn't specify), they both walk away, apparently in different directions.
Some random woman stops the girl and starts asking questions about the guy, which sounds like it turned into an entire conversation/interrogation.
Gets home and tells her mom. Girl probably only mentions it because of the random lady.
Mother probably decides random lady's concerns are more important than how he daughter actually described the guy's approach and question (assuming she did), so she calls the cops.

Part way though, it says he was "no longer following her" after the intersection, but it never actually says he was following her in the first place, or even which direction he came from. It also never says the girl was concerned about the guy, only that the random lady was and the mother decided to call the cops.

Also, they didn't say where the guy wanted directions to, which is kind of important. If it was something in a direction other than where she was going, and he went in that direction afterward, I don't really see any reason to suspect anything weird was going on. If she couldn't help him, and he just walked off a different way, that's even less suspicious. Guy was probably just from out of town and lost.

anytime someone asks you for directions you're pretty much guaranteed to get raped. When I'm asked I pull the "you gonna fuck on me" Mr. Chow line from The Hangover. Then I hit everyone in sight in the head with a crowbar and take off running. Anything less and you're putting yourself at risk.

While this definitely seems over the top, I do find it strange that any adult (male or female) would think it's prudent or practical to ask a child for directions. All the hysterics aside, asking a child for driving directions is borderline moronic behavior.

My thoughts, in order:

An adult man approaching a 12-year old girl for directions is a bit suspicious.
But he wasn't following her, so what's the problem?
Unless the directions she gave were the same direction she was going, which would make this weird again.
Some 12-year olds definitely don't look 12, so that may just be an inflammatory and not entirely necessary detail?
Would this even be a story if he were unquestionably white?
There has to be more to this story.
