Original BBC article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33517116 Quote:

Last year, 239 men and women died in prison - 29% higher than in 2010-11 and a 6% increase from last year - National Offenders Management Service (NOMS) data shows.

Source data: Only 14 deaths were women in 2014: http://www.inquest.org.uk/statistics/deaths-of-women-in-prison

All deaths (apparently no breakdown for men only): http://www.inquest.org.uk/statistics/deaths-in-prison

Other statistics to note here: 21% of female deaths are 'self-inflicted' (a poor stat of 3/14 given the extremely small sample size), whereas 80/218 (36%) were male.

An all round absolute emergency for males in UK prisons, and yet the article is written is entirely gender-neutral terms that actively obfuscate the pertinent male statistics.

The only sex-based distinction in the whole article is about male self-harm - also on the increase.
