My original plan with this survey was to submit the same survey to /r/Feminism, wait until the responses petered out, and then analyze and compare the data. This was not going to be used to prove anything, as there are many biases which could very well have an effect on responses, but rather it was an exercise simply conducted out of curiosity. Unfortunately, it appears that the /r/MensRights survey was brigaded with bots, or maybe even some very dedicated trolls. Regardless, the results for the survey of this sub are clearly compromised. I apologize for the disappointment. Here are the results of the /r/feminism survey. For me, personally:

1) Effective protection for men from sexual violence, especially sexual violence perpetrated by women (in the sense that female-on-male sexual violence is more ignored and trivialized in our society, not in the sense that it's more evil than male-on-male sexual violence).

2) Effective protection for men from domestic violence. None of this "call the help line, get told you're a batterer" and "call the cops after your wife stabs you, get arrested" nonsense.

3) Equal treatment in the criminal justice system for men and women accused of crimes - that is, a removal of the "female sentencing discount" which enables criminal women to operate much, much more easily than criminal men. (This one probably relies very strongly on changing societal attitudes re: female agency.)

The two that I see as black and white and easily obtainable through debate and changes in the law are

1.) Illegal circumcision without personal consent (mostly this means a ban on infant circumcision)
2.) The end of Selective Service

The one that is a little harder to achieve because it would require a restructuring of society and education is the end of men as violent characters. This means a lot of things, like teaching people that casual violence against men is not acceptable (we should not expect anyone to be ok with "defending themselves"), and teaching people that not all men are violent.

Every man over the age of 18 has been the victim of violence, either casually or aggressively, from friends, family, lovers, ex-lovers, enemies, and complete strangers. You can say it's a bold statement to make, but I dare you to find a counter-example. It needs to stop or the constant fear it produces will drive more men into mental instability. As a man, and MRA, and a feminist (to a degree), the equality that I want is the "female" ability to be treated delicately.

1 - The abandonment of boys in our education system. These kids are the future, they deserve equal opportunities more us adultd as they get literally no say in how we treat them or what culture they're going to be shaped by.

2 - stop the marginalisation of Half of all domestic violence victims. Whilst DV is hard to stop entirely, recognising men need to be able to ask for help and get at least a little support will reduce suffering, and maybe even impact on:

3 - Disproportionately male homeless population. Men make up a majority of the homeless, despite only getting a fraction of the support that women get. Maybe men are more physically resilient and can survive in harsher conditions... But they shouldn't have to suffer so much more as a result of pure sexism.

This is hard to say because so many issues are connected with each other. I guess the 3 main categories of the issues would be:

Gender empathy gap, and how the media, universities and feminists re enforce it -charities making more when girls or women are mentioned, as opposed to boys or men. Boko Haram killing hundreds and thousands of boys falling under the radar, yet girls are kidnapped and we have the first lady tweeting about it, crimes only considered gendered when women are the exclusive victims. The lack of empathy men receive, despite being the vast majority of veterans, of suicides, of homeless, of work place deaths. White ribbon campaign only talking about violence against women when domestic violence is ,at the very least, 40/60, as studies show, and that from 1980-2008, men made up of 37% of intimate partner homicide victims in the U.S. Commercials on t.v potraying men as clueless idiots, or pervy weirdos, or sex obsessed. Domestic violence and Child abuse campaigns on t.v showing men to be almost exclusively the perpetrators, and never the victims, despite study upon study showing differently.

-Law inequality-Men far more likely to be sentence longer for the same crimes as women. Men far more likely to be executed for the same crime a woman does. Due process rights in college rape cases. Biased custody laws. Men unjustly kept from their children.Lack of reproductive rights, paternity fraud.

-Mens health and well being-Suicide prevention, especially after divorces. Alcohol and drug abuse (men are still the majority of users).Decent and plentifull homeless and domestic abuse shelters. Help and care for veterans. The creation of safer, more convenient forms of male birth control. Prostate Cancer awareness and men being more health conscious in general.

End MGM/C This will go a long way to start getting society to seeing boys and men as complete humans and individuals.
Education reform that wil focus on impoving the future for boys i.e. ending zero tolerance policies, stop over medicating young boys, provide a learning enviroment that boys can thrive, teach trade skills as well as college prep, and get more men as educators (this is why saying gender is a social construct bothers me, young boys need positive men in there lives). Society needs fully formed men so equaliy is achievable, that work begins with educating boys.
Prison reform adult and juvenile, our prisons are acting as a poor band-aids for a failed social contract. When the system is failing this badly men are the victims that are warehoused away and ignored by society and the state.
Ending homlessness, I have to include this as this is a social ill that can be fixed. No man or boy should be without shelter in the US. The short term homeless are the easiest to help to get back into society. The chronic homeless will be more difficult but they make up such a small precentage of the homeless population and the solution to the problem has been known for a very long time, it boggles the mind this problem still exists.

Hooboy, that's a tough one. If you don't mind, I'll put two as my first priority, as for me due to...reasons, they're equally linked and important.

1a)The need for recognition of male abuse victims, whether they be victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Importantly, the recognition that abuse is not solely male on male-and there is a huge issue surrounding this fact which is often ignored, even by this sub-but rather can, and sadly, is more often than we would like to admit, female on male. Incidentally, there also needs to be more recognition of female on female domestic/sexual abuse, which seems to be ignored by both sides.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen anyone talk about gay domestic abuse. When it's brought up, it's always about men hitting women, or women hitting men. That's very troubling.

1b)The prevelance and total ignorance of men's mental health. There are so many mental health issues which are ignored in this world, and when it comes to male sufferers, this is especially so. Because of the way we're taught from a young age, a boy who cries is girly, and needs to be a big boy and not cry. Likewse, girls are taught this also, but there is less stigma regarding a girl showing her emotions-in particular negative emotions-and mental health issues than there seems to be regarding male sufferers.

So, we need to recognise that if a man has depression, anxiety disorder, or any of those more...'emotional' based illnesses, this does not make him less of a man, or 'a big girl'. It makes him a human being who needs help. Nothing more.

Additionally in this vein is the need to recognise that despite the common perception, anorexia and bullemia are not exclusive to young teenage girls. First, it is a universal disease, especially prevelant in the West, and there is a growing number of young boys and men who fall victim to this. Then when they try to get help they are ignored because it's seen as something only girls get. Likewise, we're more often than not watching for the signs of these illnesses in young girls, but do not take the time to educate our young boys about the hazards, or wonder if they have these problems.

It's becoming more prevelant where I live due to the big tradition of horse racing. For obvious reasons, the smaller the jockey, the less weight on the horse, so the faster the horse can go. This is why in most cases you'll find that professional jockeys are smaller men and women. However, in recent years there has been a troubling growth in the number of jockeys, both men and woman although it seems to be affecting the male jockeys more, who have taken to anorexia and bullemia to shed just a little more weight in order to be that little bit faster. And no one cares.

3)I've already talked about mental illness and abuse, so I suppose that covers the need for shelters for abuse victims/mentally ill who are male. So with that in mind, I guess I'll go with the rate of male homeless, especially those who have served time in the army, ex cons, and most worryingly, our young. So basically, more awareness and help for the homeless men out there, who need protection and help just as much as their female counterparts.

In line with that, and to tie everything up I guess, there needs to be more of a issue with the number of mentally ill, or abused men who wind up homeless. Because of the aforementioned problems with being mentally ill and a man, many end up on the streets. Once they are on the streets, and still mentally ill, they are viewed as more of a risk. Which means they don't get access to shelters as often. And considering that domestic and sexual abuse can lead to mental illness, which then leads to homelessness, you can see the gordian knot that these issues make.

In short, we need more of an awareness of how and why men become mentally ill, and to rebrand certain illnesses to help people realise that they don't just affect little teenage girls. They effect everyone, grown men and women alike. We need more awareness of male domestic/sexual abuse victims, especially those of the gay community. Also more recognition of lesbian victims who are mistreated by their partners.

And then more of a recognition and support for the male homeless.

One of these cannot be solved without solving the other however. So it's a big clusterfuck.

Education! Beginning in the eighties, girls have been brought to parity with boys in science and math. Nothing has been done to bring boys to parity with girls in reading and writing.
Parenting! Men are rarely respected for parenting. Fail to pay child support - all sorts of penalties. Fail to allow visitation - no penalties whatsoever.
Relationship violence. Men are (always) blamed for all the violence in relationships, even though statistics indicate women are responsible (almost) 50% of the time. Women make bellicose claims of "rape culture" at a time where the incidence of rape is (and has been) falling.

The inequality in funding. All funding, health, scholarships, homeless shelters. Women's health issues in particular get significantly more funding. For instance breast cancer gets about 4x the funding prostate cancer does. Yet prostate cancer kills more people.
Inequality in the legal system. 90% of prisoners are male. First time offenders are more likely to be incarcerated if they are male, less likely to be bailed, and receive about a 60% longer sentence for the same crime. Fathers issues fall under this as I see alimony as wrong and child custody issues/ child support as a broken system.
Circumcision [and body integrity issues in general]. It is legal to mutilate the genitals of your baby. But only if they are a boy.

Globally there is a push to have girls educated for personal empowerment, with Billions of state funding globally being set aside and shifted through NGOs to achieve this. There is no associated balance to have similarly disadvantaged boys educated, causing a growing gender gap that is a global demographic time bomb. Within 20 years there will be whole swathes of the developing world where there are educated women and illiterate males, leading to social failure and decay .... meltdown.

(1) Equality under the law which includes fair custody of children, ability to disassociate themselves with the child e.g they have the option to not have the child in their life (a similar outcome to abortion for women however obviously not as harsh). Therefore they don't have to pay child support etc they can say legally the child isn't theirs. Also fairer sentencing for men and women as men on average get longer sentences for the same crime.

(2) Ending affirmative action as it effectively discriminates against whoever is on the other end of it as they may not get hired etc due to meeting quotas etc. (See Australian Labor Party female gender quotas etc). Some people will disagree with this but nonetheless I feel that it is important.

(3) Educational outcomes for men and women. Soon there is going to be a 2 to 1 ratio of women to men getting university qualifications in this country. Something is wrong with this and I think it is the feminized environments of schooling. Boys at school are discouraged to act like "boys" and forced/persuaded to act in a certain way e.g "Why can't you act more like the girls and quietly do your study?".

I really hate to generalize, but I can't really make my point without it..

All my life I have seen other men validate women for poor behavior. I've seen women do despicable stuff and then get a pass just because they were women, and then the same guys try to physically harm a man for doing what the woman did.

We need to stick together as a group to let women know their little games and testing isn't going to work. We need to stop validating bad behavior. That's my number 1. Two and three don't really matter much after that.

I would say 1, 2 and 3 are the importance of equal treatment under the law (as there are many facets of law where men are disadvantaged).

I'm sure others will disagree, but I think our most likely path of success, and our greatest chance of getting non-MRHA support, will be in directly tackling imbalances in our various legal systems. Sentence disparity, child custody disparity (especially in those countries where Tender Years still holds sway, but also in those where TY has fallen away but a century-old pile of case law precedent needs to be overturned), Title IX challenges, etc.

It seems to me an impossibility to make substantive gains in the social sphere when we can't even get equal treatment under the law. First things first.

Lack of attention or awareness of men's issues, and the general apathy towards men's issues. I think most of our issues fall under this. It's why we have a Council on Women and Girls but Obama refuses to create the same for men. It's why we have a Violence Against Women Act. Men have a lot of problems, such as inequality when it comes to DV, our legal system, divorce, gender roles, etc, but I think the overall issue is that nobody cares and it's frowned upon for a man to even bring this issues up.

It almost all comes down to male disposability. The loss of a woman (or child) is considered a great loss, whereas the loss of a man is considered bad only in so far as it hurts the people he leaves behind. To be fair, there's biological origins to this. If half a tribe's male population is killed off, in 20 years things are back to normal. Kill off half the women in a tribe, and in 20 years the tribe is probably gone.

Our modern ultra-politically correct society refuses to consider biological origins of innate differences, despite finding sexual dimorphism in many animals and feminists' largely unquestioned claim that men are inherently more violent and aggressive. Yet, a solid understanding of biology explains so much of our social behavior, in particular our sexual social behavior. I believe that equality for men and women will only be achieved once society understands these differences and deals with them, instead of trying to force an ideology on top of reality.

1) Addressing the education gap and trying to help males catch up. This is by far the biggest to me. I have absolutely no idea how this isn't a bigger issue to most.

2) Addressing and trying to correct legal disparities (primarily sentencing - the fact that gender gap is 3x as big as racial and hardly ever mentioned is ludicrous to me)

Circumcision (male genital mutilation) is at the top of my list. The other two fluctuate. I'm just about 25 and I don't have children. I've never been married. Circumcision is the only issue that affects me on a daily basis.

I guess my solid number two would be the idea that men can't be seen with children, like fathers taking their children to the park, or when I sit in a waiting room at the clinic and some woman's 1.5 year old (guesstimation) wants to read me a story and I'm getting death glares from the mother for even existing.

Do I look like I'm taking the easy way out if I just say the #1 issue, for me, is the lack of awareness about the problems and discrimination men face? At least if I could solve any problem men have, I would make it so everyone is aware of men's problems in society.

But in case that answer is just a cop-out, I'll list the 3 issues that affect me the most personally:

The demonization of male sexuality: it took me a very long time to understand that having sexual wants and needs doesn't make me a pervert. I still find it hard to accept, as I still feel guilty sometimes over my fantasies.
Fathers not being respected and their importance not being taken seriously. So many problems stem from this: fathers not getting equal custody rights in divorce cases, fathers treated with suspicion when they take their child to the daycare/park/store, fathers treated as disposable child conceivers, etc.
The double standards in cases of domestic violence/assault of men by women. Men should be able to defend themselves or call the police against a violent woman without fearing they'll be treated like the attacker and arrested by the police or beat up by a bunch of white knights.

1...2 & 3 Stop the mentality that men/women, boys/girls are biologically equal in body and mind. I know this sounds counter productive but I believe this is the crux for most of our problems. It seems the only thing everyone wants to believe is that from pelvis up men & women are the same and this couldn't be further from the truth.

Why this is the crux of the problem?

It's because mentally men and women are different and it affects who we are and what we do. It is why certain traits are seen as negative in boys and positive in girls. It's why men don't express as much empathy (a trait tied to "maturity") as much as females (also why boys outnumber girls in a staggering amount of aspergers diagnosis) . It's why men are not as good at multitasking as females but better at focusing on a single problem or a task to "get it done". It is why language and reading skills are stronger in women then in men.

Basically nearly every trait or stereotype you can rattle off about women and men has existed and manifested itself through evolution to serve a purpose in our survival. So Johnny doesn't read as well as Jessica but Johnny can visually calculate the speed and angle of a moving object better then Jessica. This has nothing to do with how "intelligent" Johnny or Jessica is but rather how different their minds work.

Women mock men about the "man cave" or our constant interest in competitive sports. Men mock women about how they can sit with a circle of friends and never stop talking. To expect that men are not as "mature" or "socially adept" as females because we don't communicate the same way is counter productive. It is also the reason why Fathers are so important to be around when raising boys.

If we would stop the "boys and girls are equal" BS we would do better to play to each genders strengths and increase our productivity and happiness.

Does that mean each gender should be treated differently by the law? Hell no! But what it does mean is that just because a male doesn't possess a trait as well or profoundly as a female does (and vice versa) that their merritt isn't based solely on that trait/skill. That protection from violence of all forms is a human, not gender right we all should receive.

It means that little Johnny isn't put on medication because he's more rambunctious compared to little Jessica who's the same age. It means that when Johnny goes through puberty that his pursuit to spread his seed is understood so proper education and discipline can be taught. So when Jessica goes through puberty she understands that mentally her and Johnny want different things for different reasons so proper education and discipline can be taught.

If we keep pushing the stupid notion that mentally boys and girls are the same we're never going to make any headway. All that does is provide fodder for each gender to use against the other for traits each of them deem not as important as their own. I mean come on!! You think mother nature gave women surges in oxytosin and males surges in vassopressin with newborns just because? That is 2 separate chemicals to make mom and dad care for their child; if we were the same the chemicals released would be too!

Violence against men (including rape and domestic violence) being taken far less seriously than violence against women, and men being assumed to be the aggressor in any man vs. woman incident.
Child Genital Mutilation. There's no justification for any cutting a child's genitals, unless it's required treatment for rare medical problems. If you want to modify your body for cultural reasons, it should be your own decision at a reasonable age (16-18, perhaps)

That's actually a more difficult question than it seems at first glance. It really depends on how you look at it. I'm from the US, so everything I say should probably be prefaced with "in the US/west".

Portrayal of men in media and popular culture as oafish and stupid. The social climate perpetuates the problems mentioned in the previous point as well as the devaluing of males and masculinity.

1) Equal treatment under the law. This is by far the most important, imho. It's so blatantly immoral to treat people differently based on their physical traits (I believe this is also one of the biggest issues in regards to racial issues as well, how blacks are treated so much worse than whites.) The exact same crime can get you 20 years if you're a black male, 15 if you're a white male, 30 days if you're a white woman. There has to be some way to ensure some level of consistency here.

2) Male disposability being recognized by society. So many problems, particularly homelessness, are ignored by most of society because things don't matter if they happen to a man. If it's a woman or a child suffering, many more people are willing to help... but if the person in need is an adult male, the mindset is "fuck it, he can deal with it himself".

3) Circumcision. Not because so much actual harm is being done... the majority of circumcised men experience no problems. But because there should never be any harm at all, because IT'S FUCKING WRONG TO CUT PARTS OFF OF BABIES FOR NO REASON. It's the year 2014, and educated people don't understand that genital mutilation of nonconsenting people is immoral, how is that even possible.
