"Don't think it's been mentioned here, but this film is a French film which was meant to critique the hyper sexuality of minors in modern times (specifically mentioning social media and how they imitate it). However the western marketing, synopsis of the show and poster material have not been very great."

The marketing has screwed over the good intentions of this series. They should have gone with the advertising that the French used. They wouldn't have had such a backlash, but at least this issue is getting recognition. The series is based off of things happening in real life, to real girls, right now. It's everywhere and it needs to stop. Netflix needs to clean up their act on how they are promoting this shit, but the actual purpose of the series has good intentions of bringing these issues to light.

EDIT: I'm going to go ahead and go the extra mile on here and say that if we really want to stop the hypersexualization of young girls, we need to start with the fashion industry. Clothing for young girls has been getting smaller over the last 30 years. Compare a a pair of shorts for a 7 year old boy versus a 7 year old girl. Now compare those same shorts for the girl to shorts made for 20 year old women. It's not right and it needs to change. Designers and retailers need to stop promoting this and allow our young girls to just be girls. Stop dressing them up for the pedophiles.

That Netflix would choose to change the marketing to make it seem like a movie about "sexy" tweens is gross.

The director spent a year interviewing groups of girls to gain more perspective and insight into why they're so concerned with being "sexy", a trend that alarmed her:

“I came to understand that an existence on social networks was extremely important for these youngsters and that often they were trying to imitate the images they saw around them, in adverts or on the social networks,” she recalls. “The most important thing for them was to achieve as many ‘likes’ as possible.”

Reminds me of a conversation I had probably over a year ago about the way preteens behave now. How much they imitate adults, not just in dress but in speech (like saying that one of their friends left a "toxic relationship" but not even being able to define what that is. Also how can you have a relationship at 12!?). And that part of the reason is the internet isn't the age segregated place it used to be when millennials were that age, or even older. Like when I was on the internet I only followed my friends on social media, and on sites like LiveJournal only talked to girls around my age who were in the same fandoms.

Now every young girl could scroll through an endless parade of thots on Instagram. Every young girl could see these women getting loads of attention by being a thot. Can see them buying nice things because of endorsements they got by being a thot. Or God forbid, by having an onlyfans.

Yeah sometime last year they released two pedophilia-glorifying movies at the same time. Gigi and Lolita (I think it was lolita anyway). The description for Gigi made it sound more innocent than it was, but it was basically a musical about a teenager being groomed by older men and there was even a creepy song performed by an old man about "little girls" and how blessed he and other men are to have them because they turn into the objects of their desire. It was very suspicious to me that they had uploaded these movies at all, let alone at the same time. So yeah, I'm not surprised that they're now releasing this trash.

It’s way beyond media and fashion. Remember “Dance Moms”? That reality show was the exploitation of prepubescent girls in tiny costumes exposing their bodies. I don’t recall any complaints about the sexualization of young girls at that time. And, having three young granddaughters who are encouraged by their parents to take cheerleading classes instead of music lessons or joining soccer teams. And children’s pageants a la Jon Benet Ramsay that reward even younger girls with trophies and prizes for appearing as young adult women and wearing more makeup and false eyelashes is disgusting and yet highly prized in some societies. My step daughter (the mother of the three girls I mentioned) told me that if a girl isn’t wearing a bra by fifth grade, they are teased and mocked. It’s insidious and rampant in our society. And rather than scorn these behaviors, most parents will gladly pay for sexually provocative clothing for their 10, 11 and 12 year olds. I taught middle school kids (exactly in this age group) and they often wore push-up bras beneath their tight low-cut T-shirts. IN 6th GRADE!! I even had a 7th grade girl ask me (her teacher) if I’d ever given a blow job! I couldn’t believe it. We all need to work toward solving this problem. We are creating sexual promiscuity and perhaps worse than that; human sexual trafficking. Think about it.
