So we know the brain finishes maturing at 25 or even a little older. So say the person is under 25, maybe closer to 20. Do you think being with an older person (that kind of symbolizes a male/parental figure, say 6-8+ years or even older) can stunt the mental growth/development of the younger partner as opposed to just staying single? We know, whether or not the two people want to admit, there is a certain power imbalance. The older person may think they’re treating the younger person fairly. The younger person may also look up to the older partner for guidance so the older person may (whether consciously or subconsciously) think their opinion automatically grants them superiority in any and every situation (I.e. when a conflict arises) because of their age and amount of experience. This may cause the younger person to doubt their own experiences and reality because the older person refuses to see things from their point of view due to their pride and superiority complex, but the younger person is also then convinced that they must be wrong because the older person must know better. Idk it seems really toxic. I know people can belittle, dismiss, and manipulate their partners regardless of age but I just feel like an age gap makes it easier to get away with and could delay the younger person from recognizing the reality of the situation. It may cause the younger person to wait a lot longer before leaving. Idk. How can a young person who feels trapped break free? Do they leave mentally stunted in some ways? I feel like this is a genuinely problematic issue that society has barely scratched the surface on when it comes to long-term effects and consequences. Curious to know what everyone’s thoughts are on this.
