I love Brandon Sanderson’s books, specifically his Stormlight Archive series. His female characters are very real, and he doesn’t sexualize them like many male fantasy authors do. Many of his male characters are good representations of HVM. I’m thinking of one in particular who is liked by lot of female fans because he’s a real mentsch. The only people who I’ve ever heard complain about his female characters are male fans who claim they can’t understand them, don’t find their humour funny, or claim they can’t relate to them, which tells me a lot.

Also, I will always recommend the Books of Pellinor by Alison Croggon to people looking for fantasy books with strong female characters and good men. The protagonist, Maerad, is strong, independent, creative, brave, and kind. Another great fantasy series is the Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale. The protagonists are all strong women and the men are kind, gentle, strong, humble, and supportive.

Anything by Sara Maas, particularly ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ and then ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’ you need both to get the full effect. The first is when the protagonist is pickmeisha and then she realizes that shit. It’s fantasy romance, I loved it!!

NK Jemisin for sure. Maybe some leguin. The ACOTAR series by Sarah J Maas starts.... rough but that's kind of the point for the MC's development and I personally find her partner FDS approved aside from the standard fantasy novel trope of.... 500 year old elf man with a younger human girl. It happens. ACOTAR also get's smutty as heck.

I approve of FDS and my favourite YA book is 💕 Six of Crows 💕, but I only like it for the heist, because tbh the romance plot lines there are lowkey unhealthy with undeserving scrotes (one was emotionally unavailable and one literally was a racist and tried to murder the female character) so no, I guess. I'm currently about to read the Sabriel line (a fantasy trilogy about a young witch) and To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars (space odyssey kinda thing with a female protagonist). My mother's top 3 recommendations were Pride & Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Emma. I didn't like Jane Eyre cause girlie ended up taking the scrote back despite his "crazy" wife being LOCKED UP in the attic IIRC? Emma was a cute one, girlie truly showed FDS principles.

The Green Rider series by Kristen Britain. Female main character and multiple important side characters; it’s set in a world where women are respected and strong as hell. It’s high fantasy: magic, horses, mythical creatures. The seventh book just came out and I’m re-reading the first six for the nth time (I’ve probably read the first few upwards of ten times now, no joke, and every time I read them I make new connections and feel that sense of wonder all over again).

I cannot recommend this series highly enough!!

These are some of my favourite recently read fiction books that are female authored and have strong, resilient, complex women characters with depth and intellect~ Where the crawdads sing by Celia Owens, The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden, The Gilded ones by Namina Forna, and Circe by Madeline Miller ✨ can’t wait to read some more suggestions too!

It hasn't been released yet, but Iron Widow has strong FDS energy. To avenge the murder of her sister, the main character enlists in the military as a pilot and kills the murderer. She knows her worth and her strength, so despite what the misogynistic society/ army do to her, she keeps knocking them down. Iron Widow isn't shy about highlighting the cruelty society inflicts on women, but is also very much about refusing to be limited by bullshit.

I really enjoyed Stephen King's Dolores Claiborne. It gets kind of vulgar at some parts (mostly in a comical way)

Ugh It's so difficult to find good fiction. When I was a teenager I decided to improve my english reading fiction books and the female leads were atrocius 90% of the time (and the relationships were toxic af) while our dreamy male lead was almost always a scrote but with more morey and good looks.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks is an amazing YA book that transformed my view of myself and womanhood in middle school. It's basically about a girl who goes through a personal transformation uses being looked down upon and underestimated for being a girl to secretly take over an All Male secret society at her elite boarding school and orchestrate elaborate pranks making social commentary on issues often involving gender inequality and other oppressive systems. Soooo good, I think even grown women would enjoy it and get something out of it!

The Hamish Macbeth series by MC Beaton if you like slightly dated mystery fiction. The main character is a HVM who is drawn to HVW, agonizes over how to have a meaningful relationship- I got some series feminist vibes from them. They’re cute and relaxing. My mom says Beaton’s Agatha Raisin books are even more feminist but I haven’t gotten to them yet.
