You know, less than one week ago, an old lady told me that she thinks Putin must be a good man because he looks so soft and gentle - "like a sheep". I couldn't help but remind her that Putin is a cold-blooded (ex?) KGB agent...

Some women are just stunningly bad at reading men lol. He always looks cruel to me, there's something in his eyes that says he is not someone you would ever want to trust.

I know someone who took the wrong doorway whilst working at the UN decades ago, and came face-to-face with Putin. Said he has the eyes of a shark - no humanity within.

This. Especially men involved in politics. They tend to have a great PR team and a lot of charisma, they seem like trustworthy family men, with good qualities, but how many secretly cheat on their spouses or neglect their children because they are workaholics etc.
A man can seem like a great leader to his country and be a piece of sh!t in private.
All that glitters is not gold

Thanks a lot! This is absolutely disturbing to read but we need to shed light on this. I watched this documentary and noticed that the Civil Rights Movement became more and more male-dominated over time. I assumed that male aggression and violence might have played a role in this process since exploitation, sexism and sexual violence towards women happen in most religious and social structures. But I didn't dare to think MLK might have been involved. I can't imagine the pain of Black women, fighting for their human rights and then experiencing abuse both from their enemies and their so-called brothers.

As women, we really need to get better at separating what we need in a partner from what we see on tv.
Sure, he might be amazing, who knows. I know FOR SURE that he’s a great leader right now, and he’s captured the attention of the world with his charm and determination.
Yeah, that’s attractive. Sexy, even.
That has nothing to do with real life, or the moments that aren’t on camera.
So often I hear women saying how great this celebrity is, or that actor. They’re convinced to the core that they KNOW him on some level; how he is or how he feels or would react to something.
It’s all your imagination.
I work with celebrities, they’re a mixed bag. Some of them really do come across, but some are…not at all what they seem on camera.
I’m not talking about Zelensky at this point, this is a general observation.
But when we convince ourselves that this guy must be IT, that makes us vulnerable. We tend to drop our guard faster. Even meeting a man who kinda sorta reminds you of Zelensky, most women have a tendency to project their opinions on that guy, treating him better than they really should, before getting to know him.
Zelensky might be great, who knows. He’s certainly doing a great job of winning on the world stage. I hope he IS just as amazing in his relationship, we all deserve a hero like that for ourselves. We all deserve the dragon-slayer, the charmer, the guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously, but can totally kick ass when needed.
I hope he is HV. And I hope the world benefits from it.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is a great comment.
I think the lesson we need to take here is that green flags and high value are different concepts and it's dangerous to conflate the two.
Is Zelensky waving a green flag? Sure. Guy's got guts and he sounds like a responsible leader. Other heads of state could learn a thing or two from him.
Is Zelensky high value? No idea. A whole bunch of green flags don't mean he's a good person. Behind closed doors, he might be abusing his wife or molesting kids. We don't know, because we're not privy to that information.
High value means you've vetted a guy thoroughly for so long and ONLY see green flags, NO red flags. We don't know the true measure of celebrities. We can't vet strangers from a distance.
Seems like a lot of us in this community still struggle with this concept. No criticism there, I get we're all at different stages of our journey. I only say this because our lives get so much easier (and safer) once we "get it."
[–]PixiesGemFDS Newbie 205 points206 points207 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I think that he is doing a fantastic job for his country. He has many HVM characteristics, but what we know is based on media that needs to make him into a superhuman in order to give hope to his country and the world.
We can never assign HVM title to a celebrity
[–]BrightIdeaGeneratorFDS Newbie 72 points73 points74 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well said. I still admire this bravery. He is doing a fantastic job, and I feel for him. But that's a good point. Never put a celebrity on a pedestal.
This. Don't have heroes. Putting people on pedestals leaves us open to manipulation and dishonesty, ime.

I found him cute and charming and later found out that he was actually an actor who was voted in so that made him even more likeable.
But I am hearing that BIPOC in Ukraine are literally being left behind while the white citizens get to flee the country for refuge. My question is, what is he doing about this?
[–]thinkingaboutfrogsFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Ukraine is evacuating all foreign students (who are the BIPOC in Ukraine) today. The Ukrainian minister of foreign affairs Dmytro Kuleba tweeted a hotline for them to call today.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
That should have been done in the beginning. Not after BIPOC who had no connection to Ukraine, pointed it out.
[–]thinkingaboutfrogsFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
This is true. But keep in mind that it is hard to make decisions during a war and during the initial evacuations priority was given to women and children. There are also tens of millions of Ukrainians who want to get out but still aren’t able to. The president has literally been on the frontlines of the war and is more concerned right now with keeping his country existing separately from Russia and not getting bombed to oblivion. People are getting hurt everywhere and inevitably some are being left behind. Race relations in the west don’t have a one-to-one correspondence with race relations everywhere.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
People were trying to get on the train and were physically pushing BIPOC off of it. There were also times where staff at the stations were saying that (white) women and children were to get on first. There are Ukrainians who aren’t white (and I don’t mean by the process of naturalization) and some are mixed. It was not up to the staff to make snap judgments on people’s appearance and claim that they were only letting Ukrainians on first.
Everyone should have been on the train and if it was full, have the ability to get on the next one without being asked if they were Ukrainian.
[–]thinkingaboutfrogsFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I completely agree that it wasn’t up to the staff, and that it’s absolutely messed up that individuals were being racist and not letting POC on some of the trains. I’m just saying I don’t think it’s fair to blame Zelenskyy for this, since it wasn’t government policy and furthermore the government is currently doing what it can to get POC out. Furthermore, while I do believe racial issues are important, I don’t believe that this should be a major focus of the president when his country is being bombed in all of its major cities. Bombs don’t discriminate and affect the millions of civilians - the major priority should be keeping as many people safe as possible.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Bombs don’t discriminate but if you’re rushing white Ukrainians on the train and BIPOC Ukrainians—as well as BIPOC citizens as a whole—are left behind, who are the bombs going to affect? The BIPOC who were still stuck in the country.
There was a simple solution to that. It’s not that complicated.
[–]melympiaFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
From what I'm hearing, that's a false rumor, though. However, it's hard to tell what's true and what isn't in this situation.
According to the spokesman for the German UN refugee agency, Chris Melzer, there are no signs of people fleeing the war being rejected on the Polish border with Ukraine. Melzer, who is currently on the Ukrainian-Polish border, contradicted such rumors in social media during an online press conference. As the guardian of the Geneva Refugee Convention, the UNHCR was extremely sensitive and investigated this question.

The Tagesschau (see link) is the most-watched television news service in Germany. Not without fault, but usually pretty solid in its reporting.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link
It’s not. A Black student filmed himself at the border as he was waiting for a train and said that he wanted to be able to get on the next one.
I’m not at all justifying what Russia is doing to Ukraine but Ukraine has participated in fascism and racism and are not necessarily the victim. (Again, I’m not justifying Russia invading the country)
[–]melympiaFDS Newbie 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
A while back, here in Germany, there were many reports on social media about a certain group (don't remember which, but some kind of "muslim immigrants") having gang-raped a young girl to death - or gang-raped and later killed her? I'm fuzzy on the details. What I do remember, though, is that there was an outrage. "Why doesn't anybody punish the culprits? Why don't the state-controlled media report on it at all?" It later came to light that it was all a lie orchestrated by Russia - or was it the AfD (kinda our neonazi party which I hope will fade into obscurity ASAP) who are close to Putin and the like in political ideology? (I think it was Russia, but, once again, I'm fuzzy on the details.) That being said, I'm very wary about things that you can only find on social media these days.
On the other hand, there's an official who looked into it stating he couldn't find any evidence of this. There are people who work with Ukrainian refugees in several neighboring countries who say they haven't seen or heard of anything like it. There are refugees - also people of color - who claim that nothing like that happened, but that they had to be treated differently at customs because they're not natives.
When it comes to manipulation, I think that social media and videos uploaded there are the easiest of all mentioned sources to manipulate.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
It doesn’t take a week to figure out that everyone should be on the same train. It takes one minute for someone to board a train, no questions asked.
It’s a privilege and clownery to realize that BIPOC in your country are being segregated in the lines for the departing trains. It does not take a week to figure out that they should be on the train and should be treated the same as the Ukrainians who are trying to flee—everyone is getting on the same train for the same reasons.
And if there is evidence or not, if I was in charge, I would immediately address it. “I’m being informed that this is happening. Stop it if it is or else we will hold you accountable for discrimination.”
With all due respect, Germany has committed genocide against Haitians and Jewish people. Germany is the reason why neo nazis are even a thing. I don’t expect sound judgment on racial matters.
[–]melympiaFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
If you go back far enough in time, many nations - maybe even most - have committed a genocide or other acts of incredible cruelty and human rights violation. If you would be so kind to mention your own nationality, I'm sure it would be easy to dig up the dark past of your own nation. But it's easy to put yourself on a high horse if you play mysterious.
However, you telling me that you cannot expect sound judgement from me because of something that happened around the time my grandparents were born (and thus, much too young to be involved with!!!) shows you yourself as a xenophobe at the very least, just against Germans.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
You just made racist statements in your previous comments and are currently justifying why it took the Ukrainian government awhile to figure out getting BIPOC citizens out of the country when it could have been decided the moment a BIPOC person entered the train. That was minutes ago. Not 70 years ago. You don’t have grandma and grandpa to blame for YOUR biases and racism.
And no, Black and Brown countries were not attacking each other over race, let alone have gone after European and British unlike British countries and European countries have over Black and Brown nations.
This is typical white feminism. It astounds me the lengths you go to show solidarity towards white women but BIWOC, let alone BIPOC are an afterthought. Knock it off.
[–]melympiaFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What is racist about claiming that various official sources - people in positions to look into it - say that what is shown on social media is not be what's happening? What about me saying that I prefer to believe official sources over social media sources is racist? Considering there have been tamperings with social media before since they are easily manipulated? What about me stating that it's hard to tell what is and isn't true in the current situation is racist? Especially considering that the aggressor in the ongoing war is Russia, a country known for spreading fake news worldwide using social media... Now consider that Russian's president claims that Ukraine needs denazification, and suddenly, "proof" of racism in Ukraine appears on social media... Maybe you should not look at everything through color goggles. There are other layers to consider. (I'm still not saying one is more true than the other, just that I prefer to believe one over the other because of the given reasons.)
I didn't say anything about Ukraine figuring anything out, so how is that racist? Why are you putting words in my mouth? However, I do have to ask how Ukraine - a country attacked by a much bigger country - was supposed to evacuate BIPOC persons if they haven't figured out how to evacuate anyone. Yes, some people made it. Around 1 out of 40-something million. And, yes, some of them are non-white. Are you trying to say that, during a surprise attack, Ukraine's first order of business should have been to evacuate all BIPOC, and fuck whoever else needs attention of any kind - non-BIPOC wanting to evacuate, soldiers needing orders to protect refugees (of all backgrounds and colors), civilians (of all backgrounds or colors) and infrastructure alike, civilians of any background or color needing information, food, water and medical care? If so, who is the racist?
You're also freely mixing arguments and facts and non-facts (like me saying anything about Ukraine's policy regarding refugees) to put me in a corner I do not belong in.
You said this yourself:
This literally happened before 1946 (since the war where it happened was ended in 1945). And yet, you use that as your argument to invalidate my opinion. Racist much?
I do not disagree with the second part, that many European countries (including Britain and Russia) did all that. Did you know, though, that this list also includes some Asian countries? Japan, China, Osman Empire... Also at least one African country in ages past: Egypt. Ever heard of Moses? As a matter of fact, genocide is also done by none-white people, although, in most cases of genocide among people of color, it's an ethnic group of one country massacring another group in the same country. You don't believe me? Look for yourself:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Bangladesh_genocide
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rwandan_genocide
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_Fields
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_in_Darfur
As a summary: Not all aggression is white. Not all wrongs are done by white people, despite what you want to believe. And yet, you feel comfortable to call others racists...
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Speculation is a waste of time. I respect what Zelensky's done, but I don't know the guy personally let alone behind closed doors, so I can't say what kind of a man he really is.
Honestly, this line of thinking misses the point and does us no favors. It's like posts from FDSers who've known a guy for a month and are already calling him HV. You're making up an answer. Truth is, you don't know.
You only find out whether someone's HV through a lot of vetting over a long period of time with absolutely no red flags. You can't guess, let alone about a stranger from a distance.

[–]edelbiatchFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I had a good impression about him so far. Given everything I know about men and power, I highly doubt that a HVM will reach the status of a president, particularly in such troubled times in a troubled country. Since acting is a part of his former career, I wouldn't trust him blindly.
I can say that he is very charismatic. Which doesn't really say anything about whether he is trustworthy. People with narcissistic and psychpathic tendencies have a higher likelihood to become famous and getting in leadershup positions. They tend to perform better in high pressure situations than people who are low on narcissistic traits. Ukraine like many Eastern European countries also doesn't have a long history or feminist movements, especially when it comes to more subtle everyday sexism. For this reasons I would be very hesitant to call any Ukrainian politician a HVM. He could take good strategic decisions about the war while casually groping his secretary, who knows. I was let down by each of the celebrity men I used to admire since all of them had their nasty secrets so far.

He’s allowing foreign fighters into Ukraine, including far-right Neo Nazi groups to assist the Azov Battalion. https://www.vice.com/amp/en/article/3ab7dw/azov-battalion-ukraine-far-right
These far-right Neo Nazis don’t believe women are equal. I know it’s a war and they need people to fight, but this is just as bad as a country allowing jihadist foreign fighters into a Muslim country. These groups are going to get battlefield experience, become stronger, and then migrate back to Western Europe if they don’t die in Ukraine. Ukraine is going to be like Raqqa at the height of the Caliphate for these groups.
[–]yesmmeFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That is not a good look that he’s permitting neo nazis to fight for the country. I’m not justifying the invasion of Ukraine but I’ve always known that they are a nation that has permitted fascism and racism. It’s only been a week that it came to light that they were literally leaving BIPOC citizens (some were even pushed off the train) behind while Ukrainians got to hop on trains and leave the country right away.
Peep my thread. I have a German woman tripping over herself trying to justify why the government’s lack of urgency in getting BIPOC on trains was okay and I pointed out that she thought that way because of her country’s role in the Haitian genocide and the Holocaust (of course) and she responded that that all countries have committed atrocities against each other. 🤡

In my opinion, yes. He is risking his life to protect his country when he could so easily have saved himself or turned it over to Putin. He has protected his family and is trying to protect his citizens too, while not backing down. He is willing to die while defending his country.
I am a full on fan-girl of Zelensky, he is everything a leader should be! I live in the UK and I can't imagine Boris fighting in the same situation, I can see him fleeing to a luxury holiday while citizens die! I am from Ireland and while I can't imagine Michael D Higgins fighting for us (but only because he is very old), I think he would stay in Dublin and do what he could if there was war. I would consider Michael D a HVM too. Boris obviously is one of the lowest of the low.
I think if there was anything LV about Zelensky we would have heard about it by now.
