I am so glad!

I really want this to not end here, though. I want to know what changes the police will take to try and prevent this in future.

β€œI have not the slightest doubt that the defendant used his position as a police officer to coerce her on a wholly false pretext into the car he had hired for this purpose. It is most likely that he suggested to Sarah Everard that she had breached the restrictions on movement that were being enforced during that stage of the pandemic,” Fulford said.

How can the public trust the police then, especially women? Sarah Everard's "arrest" was witnessed by members of the public, who trustingly assumed that she must have done something wrong and that otherwise nothing untoward was occurring. What are the police going to do about this? Because right now it looks like they expect everyone to believe that there is no problem, just a specific incident involving a specific police officer which is now resolved since he's locked up for life, even though the door is still just as wide open for this to happen again.

I agree. I know this was a win for UK women today, but I can't help but feel the severity of the sentence was due to the police/law enforcement covering their own asses.

[–]Noemie_MathildeFDS Newbie 74 points75 points76 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, he'd been flashing women....how come he wasn't immediately suspended from duty? A sex criminal. I bet female officers felt uncomfortable around him, but then who would ever listen to them?

[–]NetflixBingeQueenFDS Newbie 69 points70 points71 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not only that but his nickname was supposedly β€œThe Rapist” amongst fellow cops. The rot is deep within the whole Police force. I feel his sentence is just symbolic rather than implementing real changes that would deter this happening again.

I totally agree that the police need to take some responsibility for this, unfortunately the onus is going to be back on women to decide what's safe or not. As ever, the sad truth is we can only rely on ourselves and each other. I would never get into and unmarked car without making a call to the nearest police station to verify it and I think I'd be really hesitant to get into any car with one or two male officers. This is not in any way suggesting Sarah could have done anything differently, he was always going to take her and could have easily overpowered her, what I'm saying is - we still can't trust anyone. This has highlighted what we already knew and made it even more terrifying because the people who are supposed to protect the public are repeatedly failing women or getting high on the power they are given.

I was crying that she actually got the justice she deserved. It might seem silly, but it really hit me. I am so fucking tired of men not being held accountable for their actions against women. Life sentences for taking a life should be the norm. You take a life, then too bad, you give yours for it.

The judge even set a precedent. This is such a massive deal! It’s a step toward actually holding police and authority figures accountable.

Yes, this case horrified me on a whole new level. The Brock Turner case was disgusting, but at least the victim was mercifully unconscious during the ordeal. She has her life and her loving family around her. Her parents didn't have to bury a loved one. But this... I can't begin to imagine what Sarah Everard's last hours must have been like.

I hope this sick fuck enjoys prison. I'm sure inmates don't react kindly to former police officers. Let him see what getting raped feels like.

They really don't. It gives me joy he will face a hard time in prison. Let's see how tough he is standing up to fellow men.

A former cop who murdered a woman. He will have a very hard time in prison. Good.

[–]Davina33FDS Disciple 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I read online today that another cop from his same unit was arrested for rape. It's absolutely dreadful.

[–]Left-Requirement9267 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oooh yes I can say with some certainty that they definitely will beat the ever living fuck out of this piece of shit, if he slips up even once he will be straight into the Main yard and trust me, they do NOT like rapists, police or pedos

"Filth" is a euphemism for police so I love your title πŸ˜€

A lot of criminologist think he was a repeat offender. This could be the tip of the iceberg. There is always an escalation of deviant behaviour. A horrendous reminder never to let yourself be detained or arrested by a lone police officer. Demand they radio for another officer, scream and make a scene so passers by will film you, resist arrest, do whatever it takes to avoid being moved to a 2nd location. Men are depraved. Police are no different. May she rest in peace.

Maybe if you're a white woman. If you're black, brown or Indigenous this has the potential to go very badly for you.

[–]clithoodwinkFDS Newbie 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seriously! My heart sank into my stomach when I saw the β€œresist arrest” suggestion, because that will surely get a identifiably WOC injured or killed. I don’t want any woman thinking she’s doing something to make herself safer to end up in an even worse situation.

I personally feel like men like this should be taken out back and sh0t. That way, they won't be able to ever re-offend, or escape prison, or have their conviction overturned or whatever it might be that would possibly let them go free to walk amongst the general population again. Or maybe even killed in the same manner they took their victim(s) life. Maybe then they'll be able to get some god damn empathy and compassion moments before they see the light. Or maybe not. But just how satisfying that would be, knowing all scum like this meet the same fate as their innocent victims πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

[–]rinabeanFDS Apprentice 14 points15 points16 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it's impressive enough that he got actual life and not just 10 years called life. the justice system here is dire

[–]reallyrunningnowFDS Newbie 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just put him in a prison with a lot of gang members. They'd love to get their hands on a former power tripping cop.

[–]KindredMaximusFDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Terrible. I don't have much love for cops - a lot of them are just legal bullies and predators hiding in plain sight. RIP Sarah
