God I hated this when I worked in retail and service. Men think being nice mean we wanna smash or is an open invitation to rude comments. Not only men, but women think we are after their men too. I’m trying to pay my rent, not take your trash out.

This says a lot about how men treat women, doesn't it? They are nice only to women they want to have sex with, so they expect women to be the same.

THIS. It’s all projection and wishful thinking. I’m sure plenty of male employees in retail/customer service are just as friendly towards them but they never think those men want to fuck them. They really cannot imagine people being genuinely nice without the ulterior motive for sex.

I wonder why the women would think that were after their men. I’m inclined to believe that only men act nice if they want sex and women would treat anybody nicely.

Internalized misogyny. We are taught to place our anger on women for a man’s problematic behavior.

Imagine how dumb you have to be to think service industry staff are flirting with you...

It's so common! Lord grant me the confidence of a mediocre man.

Old married men will think you greeting them and their wife politely and leading them to a table is you trying to start an affair with them.
They're not living in reality.

Husband and I had a friend like this. It was insanely annoying.

It's the same thing when dudes think strippers are legit into them. Bro you have dollars, that's what they're into. They're into doing their job.
Irony is if they ever ARE able to score a relationship with a stripper they soon resent her for being a stripper.

Jesus Christ this was my whole bartending career in a nutshell. Take some entitled dudes , get them drunk, it can be a recipe for disaster when you decline to give them your phone number. Even worse I had some managers that encouraged flirting with the customers and sitting next to the gross ass regulars . Never again.

This reminds me of my ex. We got in a fight once about my "attitude" and how I never smiled anymore. He went on and on about how the women he works with are always smiling and happy to see him, the girls at rhe gym he went to apparently couldn't stop smiling at him and were always soooo nice. He gave me example after example of women he had brief contact with daily and their wonderful positive attitudes.

It's funny how in all those examples women are all in a situation where smiling and acting nice is if not highly encouraged, downright required as a JOB.

The audacity.
Can't even count up how many times, when I was a server, men flirted continuously and left their numbers. 90% of the time it was ~10% tippers...
I mean, appreciate the tip, thank you, but this is not a me actually calling you kind of tip hun.

I had a gross situation when I was a waitress in a hotel restaurant where a lot of business people stayed. A guest who was 25 years my senior left me a note with his phone number and room number saying he'd enjoyed our conversation. I showed it to the guys I worked with, they ran around the hotel with it and showed it to any staff they could and then it was pinned on our staff notice board for about a year.
We also put his number into Facebook and found he had a long term partner and 3 children 🤢

Somewhat related but working in retail there’s but several times where I’m talking to a couple, the girlfriend walks away for a moment and the boyfriend starts straight up flirting with me 😬

Oh yeah. When I was at uni I worked at a gym, where my boss literally told me to smile and be friendly. The amount of dudes thinking I was interested in them was creepy. I kept having guys asking me out and asking for my phone number, while I was just working. Not cool.

I work in a male-dominated field and this happens to me all the time, when I'm just trying to make small talk/have work friends.

Omg, I've been thinking about this so much lately. Over lockdown my male flatmate and I were hanging out a lot because we're the only ones in the house who like to unwind with a drink every so often (tbh during lockdown it became...very often), and we realised we had a lot in common and know a lot of the same people and I was like "oh this is cool, a new friend!"
Then he said a few things here and there that really sounded to me like he was developing a bit of a crush (such as "I think you're so incredibly cool" and "I think you're rad as hell" and "you know so many things, it's amazing" and more) and his body language and the way he looked at me told me the same. And then he started acting really weird and seemed to be keeping his distance from me.
I mentioned it to a couple of my friends and they said "are you sure you're not the one with the crush?" Ex-fucking-cuse me? I'm not the one telling him I think he's amazing and so smart and talented. Then I went totally inside my own head because I was worried I had somehow given him the wrong idea and maybe I was acting like I was into him when I wasn't. It was awful and I felt totally neurotic over it.
And the reason I reacted so severely is because of how a male "friend" treated me many years earlier. He and I were having drinks at his place and he started talking about how we should hook up but he doesn't want a relationship. I was so offended and said "what makes you think I want a relationship?!" and he said "[our mutual friend] told me you fancied me". I said "uh yeah, like over a year ago when we first met but not now! I just want to be friends". Then he jumped across the table and kissed me. I was really taken aback but just kept saying no. Because I wasn't into him. He got super weird with me after that (I guess I rejected him but how are the words "you're very beautiful and I'd happily go to bed with you but I don't want a relationship" not also a rejection?) and even though we still have a lot of mutual friends, he and I are definitely not friends anymore.
A similar thing happened with two male colleagues at different workplaces. Just...the audacity. It makes me second-guess every little thing I've said or done around them.
I never, ever want to be in that position again. I'm so sick of guys convincing themselves I'm into them for NO REAL REASON. Did I fucking SAY I'm into you? No. So don't assume.

Very true. Today if a woman befriends or is calm or socially works with other men in, Western society, think they are into them, want them, flirting with them or "making the first move" - LOL.
yes they do 🤮🤢

I guarantee that if the same women made overt displays of interest, they would be called desperate whores and treated accordingly by these sickos

We live in a Society where the Patriarch has brainwashed like all Men to think kindness as flirting.
[–]sadcelloFDS Apprentice2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
They think like this because they're never nice to women they're not interested in.

This!!! So I saw something similar to this on a relationship sub- a guy wanted to know the difference between ‘friend zone vs not’ with a girl who was talking to him at work. He approached her, he invited her to hang out with a group of friends, he makes all the first moves and can’t understand why she was ‘too busy’ and couldn’t make their next hangout. The audacity that a commenter stated if she friend zones then she is cruel and ‘lost feelings.’ Like no my dude, talking to someone is what we do, guys have to talk to their male coworkers without the impression that they want to date them, so why should it be any different. You know how many... (deep breath) times a guy has tried to make advances or ‘invite me to a group lunch’ on the job to find out its really just him trying to date me?

“Otherwise wonderful”
Sis, he’s just as shitty in other ways, he just hasn’t shown them to you yet or you haven’t noticed them.
