Honestly, at that point, I think both parties are at fault. The woman basically took the keys to her jail cell and locked herself in. For a decade. I've known couples like this. The men are always soooo smiley, because they have everything they want.

They are the king of the castle, total optionality, no commitment, split bills so they can save cash for their own retirement (which their forever GF won't be part of). They dangle the "one day maybe we'll get married" carrot/carat, in front of the woman's nose for YEARS. And the woman doesn't want to waste their time, so she's suffering under the sunk cost fallacy. And the more time she puts in, the more she gets addicted to doubling down on the relationship, because she can't admit that it was all a waste.

So she just stays, and the more time goes by, the more she can't leave because she needs the payoff, that Return-on-investment. And more time goes by, and that just drives the conviction that she needs to stay for that ROI. So staying just drives the need to stay. It's like a drug addiction.

The Forever GFs I've known? Always have this really hollow look in their eyes. Their default state is embarrassed. It's sad to see, because you know that they would never choose to be in those situations if they could go back in time and re-choose again.
