I know its super tempting to reply to the ex-ships...but, i would have not responded at all, especially the way you did. Your texts revealed that you acknowledged his ghosting, that you are annoyed and angry. I have too much pride to give them the pleasure of knowing that their behaviour still conquers me emotionally grudgingly. Next time, don't respond. She shouldn't regret that message now that the deed is done. I hope she moves on to better things and i'm sure she is. If that was her way to satisfy and give herself closure, each to their own. Personally, I just wouldn't. I cannot live knowing i gave someone the satisfaction to know i was/am still hurt. I'll be sad in my head but not outside my head. You can take me to hell and back than to reveal my hurt to a good-for-nothing.
As for your question, people are well aware when they hurt others with or without the victim's reaction to their behaviour. Guys like this know they hurt and frankly, they don't care if you express it to them. It's an ego boost for them. It's flattering.

You just gave him an ego boost letting him know that he had the upper hand by being the dumper instead of the dumpee and that you are still angry about it. I'd usually advocate not responding, but in this case if you hadn't responded his ego would take over and he'd just convince himself you didn't reply because you didn't see his text, you got a boyfriend, or a new number.
