actual fact, I was in a discord for my state at the start of the pandemic, and a scrote was having daily mental breakdowns because he couldn't go and bother strippers. Legit got depressed like his life didn't mean shit. They love the thrill of using, objectifying, pestering and getting attention from women.

Growing up in NYC, street harassment started when I was about 15, and it would’ve been earlier had I not been extremely young looking. As I grew into adulthood, street harassment became workplace harassment, social setting harassment, and straight up groping in bars and crowds. Being female was enough, but I also had a very attention-getting look, despite always trying not to get attention. I never suppressed who I was to avoid it, but I probably would’ve dressed more flamboyantly if I hadn’t been sure of worse consequences for it.

I’ve heard this tired old trope above about women “missing the attention” enough times to wonder if I would ever actually miss it, or if it would ever actually go away.

From the teenaged years to present, I almost always had headphones on in public. It helped me not hear what people said to me, and improved my quality of life.

Several years ago, in my forties, I stopped dyeing my hair and let it go grey. I also started gaining weight for the first time in my life, and was no longer a size 2. Combined with never wearing heels or “going out” outfits any more, I found myself suddenly quite invisible in the city, where there are so many visually stimulating women.

My god, it was bliss.

Being female of any shape and color, obviously I still got harassed, but it went from constant to “not even every time I left the house,” which was comparative silence. It really made my entire life better, in every way. Not having that constant guard up, and worry that someone would escalate from verbal abuse to physically interfering with me, it made me a less angry person. If I didn’t care about being heavy or my actual health, I might’ve considered staying heavy, just to avoid that kind of attention at that constant level.

When I started running for exercise and losing weight, it started up again, but the grey hair really dampened the effect overall.

I no longer live in the city, and in the pandemic, have not been anywhere near sexual harassment in a year and a half now, and I have actively enjoyed that freedom every minute of every day.

Fuck your beauty standards that demand women stay within the male gaze, but also fuck you for making women miserable for simply existing as identifiably female.

I’m in my fifties now, grey haired and unharassed, and it’s the best time of my life.
