Pretty good video, one thing I really dislike about this topic, is the lack of self reflection women and some men have in enforcing these masculine norms and desiring them while simultaneously attempting to shame men out of the behaviour they demand. Men are just responding to what is socially rewarded, and most of the time, it's this kind of toxic behaviour that is equally as demanded from older men and younger women.

I've been watching her progression since "Did I just get Red Pilled?"

At first, I was worried she was just going to turn into another female youtuber who blandly repeats one side of the typical gender war talking points.

But I'm consistently impressed with how she improves at NOT doing that with every video, and instead tangibly digs in to objective matters with critical language, yet keeps it grounded on topic as an appeal for a culture of greater empathy and understanding for men. At the moment, she's like the best of Prim Reaper and Dadvocate combined. This video and the two recent ones on dads are some of the absolute best pro-male content I've seen. It's truly fantastic stuff, and I hope she keeps it up.

The chart at 16:55 demonstrates the crux of the issue for me. The outright refusal to trace "toxic" male behaviour back to any kind of root cause beyond the usual hyper-superficial answers like "teh manosphere" or Andrew Taint.

It never occurs to them that men aren't inherently defective. That perhaps we need to look at the lived experiences of men - both individual and shared - before we start diagnosing them.

I really like this video. I was initially iffy on her when she started posting, and have sort of avoided her, but she is so precise in her criticisms that it's awesome to see. It actually showcases genuine scientific thinking. Like how she outlined how definitions of toxic masculinity and the like are commonly asserted to be structural, not individual. Then how the paper in question took the source behind that claim, omitted a key piece of it, and then developed their individual toxic masculinity scale.

I am going to dread seeing this paper being cited in a a dumb back and forth of validation studies for the next five decades...

One of the most interesting things here is the realization that my model for masculinity was a man who suffered extreme war trauma and managed to be successful in life anyway. I can’t think of a single day before my father died when he didn’t mention Vietnam in some way. Some of the stuff he described was absolutely horrific and I don’t think he ever spoke about the worst.

So… my skills for coping with stress are modeled on skills developed by someone with severe PTSD who managed to integrate back into society as a normal-presenting person with no support from anyone. I guess that’s toxic to some people, but what was he supposed to do? What was I supposed to do?

Ive seen several tiktok feminists say "well its not my opinion, science says it". Ive seen some ridiculous studies that you can just tell from the headline. But whats worring is that this justifies for things like "feminist psychologists" and such biased professionals to exist; they have been increasingly more common in my country.

Considering a lot of data is scewed because the law of many countries says f->m rape isn't rape, affected stats are obviously useless. Sadly they are still widely spread and used. You can spot them frequently withouth being questioned at all. It's is obvious it should be questioned. But cognitive bias is a strong thing.

been following her for awhile and appreciate her greatly. this was a step up again

curiously + bravely, she decides to try define 'masculinity' and really stick her neck out here

Which given that I appreciated her, my initial reaction was... i appreciate the effort, but theres always some dissonance with an outsider (in this case female) trying to speak on behalf of someone else. Youre going to miss something, and those small details really matter when multiplied over a lifetime.

what she came up with (obviously see the video for the context behind it more):

masculinity is a form of contextual intelligence that emerges from necessity. It is shaped by threat, constraint, and survival context.

humans are tribal, and masculinity functions as the rule set for men within the tribe - the expectations placed on men by men and women to promote safety, continuity, and survival.

the responsibilities of men are shaped by what must be faced, what must be endured, and what must be protected.

which i was... yeh you basically nailed it i think. especially the dynamic (highly context dependent) component of it, people are intensely adaptable and thats going to look very different in many different ways. and its respectful, honouring, supportive, and gives some actual framework to understanding masclunity (which some other definitions are like masculinity is doing male coded behaviour and action.. which is like... a pretty empty definition especially for any gender related research to be built off of)

curious of others' thoughts, and criticisms of course, because even after some thought i really have nothing bad to say about that definition (besides wording could use another tightening up perhaps, just for clarity and communication)

Her videos are always well researched and interesting if sometimes a little hard to watch (because of the subject matter, not her ideas and opinions).
