At 22 Alexander Johnson was suspended from the Tenn football team after being falsely accused of rape. He was a 1st round talent but was never drafted. At 26, he was acquitted and joined the Denver Broncos. He played his way into the starting lineup, proved his worth and now is a starting MLB/ILB.

Shaming and condemning men who are strong and powerful as representations of "toxic masculinity" while promoting the exact same traits for women is not equality.

The idea that we can simply be "free from gender norms" is probably not accurate. Science shows humans develop and enforce norms naturally, subconsciously and illogically from an an early age.

Feminism Magazine's Feminism 101 defines toxic masculinity as: "physically strong, unsentimental, and assertive". Here's the science to prove all of those are good for you. (Seriously, even unsentimental is a net positive).

Im sick of men's defense being "not all men". It should be "almost no men". The vast majority of men are not rapists and its about time we acknowledged this.

The hysteria of October 2018 is difficult to exaggerate. Even now, looking back over a year later I have a hard time believing how bad it was. McCarthyism is the closest American example.

I had a close friend accused of rape three weeks after the Kavanaugh confirmation. Despite attempts to show evidence that she had told three consecutive proven lies, I was told by the feminist alumni and students of a liberal arts college that it didn't matter because they had "chosen to believe."

I was a monster for contradicting her. They repeatedly tried to suppress the truth by shaming me online as a "rape apologist" and by assaulting me at the local bar and by calling my cohabiting girlfriend to make sure I wasn't abusing her.

The final straw was when a Title IX coordinator used revenge porn to blackmail me into silence for not "believing."

I was told the survivors group was frightened and triggered by my evidence.

Thankfully cooler heads have prevailed. But for a while there a lot of people actually meant "taking a leap of faith" in order to "believe." For those people evidence that multiple lies were told was just evidence of the accuser's trauma.

We still se the after effects inasmuch as people still believe Dr. Ford despite the corroborating witness than she named, Leland keyser saying of Ford's accusation, "It would be impossible..."

If you "start by believing" you can be made to believe anything.

I am relieved to see people walking this back and unsurprised they don't want to be held accountable for the harm they caused.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 6 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

Wow, thank fuck I don't live in liberal social circles, must be hell walking on eggshells all the time.

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 31 points32 points33 points 6 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

Well I am very much a pariah to that part of town. Worse than the guy accused of rape. Because I dared to disbelieve women.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 6 years ago (26 children) | Copy Link

A blessing in disguise. Was it the event that lead you to realise something was wrong with leftist/liberal social narratives, or were you already heterodox before hand?

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 44 points45 points46 points 6 years ago* (25 children) | Copy Link

I was a self identified feminist back then.

At one point, after I tried reaching out politely and respectfully to make my case that the "victim" was actually an abuser that had done the same thing to her last three boyfriends,

I was called an "MRA."

I was like, "No I'm not!"

I eventually looked into it and that experience catalyzed my transformation into a leftwing male advocate.

I think a few people refused to be convinced by the evidence because if I was right then that would mean that their own behavior was monstrous in enabling an abuser to publicly and permanently smear her victims reputation.

Once you've invested yourself into believing and using an "ends justify the means" approach to silencing dissent against belief, it can be very hard to accept that you are not actually fighting monsters but have in fact become a monster yourself.

The other piece of the puzzle was realizing by their own broadened definition of rape, I had been raped by several members of the mob against me.

That is, I was called a "rape apologist" by an intersectional feminist who, (years previously,) woke me up with sex without a condom while I was sleeping. She was part of the mob that decried my "defense of a known rapist."

The unspoken double standard, and the gendered stigma around rape, has been a source of personal rage that I have had to let go off for my own personal sanity.

[–]peanutbutterjamsleft-wing male advocate 18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

has been a source of personal rage that I have had to let go off for my own personal sanity.

Good for you. It's hard to let go of being wronged like this. You feel powerless against a social force that has no encoded system of justice that all of our (supposedly patriarchal) institutions have. They may not always follow them but at least there's a system of appeal and a possibility of recourse.

You have none of that in a social setting.

So it's worth noting that typically men don't do as well in that kind of social 'warfare'. It's something long practiced in female culture and so men who are the target of gossip or social mob justice can feel particularly powerless...which is enraging. Any sign, any hint, any whiff, of that anger, though, and you'll just prove every misconception your accusers have about men.

It feels like a no-win situation.

So yeah, good on ya for letting it go. I've had to do the same thing and it's hard but it's so worth it to accept what happened, learn what you can and decide to use the experience to make you a better person, not a worse one.

I hear from many that these progessive spaces feels like being watched all the time and knowing the double standards yet still adhere to them for fear of being punished. Ironic as these spaces puts so much emphasis on not being bias and being wholesome. I see similiar enviroments with the religios church ladies that outwardly show a warm personality, but indwardly is a very nasty person that backstabs and undermine people in social gatherings.

As soon as I began to question the concept of male privilege as it had been taught to me, the internalized ideology began to collapse.

MRA is generally a pejorative when used publicly irl.

But I'm the type of person who never refuses a label, especially one used by my enemies. I have been "dubbed" an MRA and choose to embrace that.

What it mean is that I am for equality and against double standards regardless of the cost for speaking out against them.

[–]Azothlike 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

MRA is generally a pejorative when used publicly irl.

I'd definitely say most people don't know what MRA means in public. You definitely spend too much time socializing in academia.

The conversation practically writes itself if someone is silly enough to try and use it as a pejorative in an actual public setting.

"What's MRA stand for?"

Answer plus some whiny thoroughly ignored nonsense

"What, like, they upset about selective service and police brutality rates and stuff?"

Backtracking and confused handwaving

"Huh."

[–]istira_balegina 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would say anyone who participates in the culture wars or calls themselves a feminist definitely knows what a men's rights activist is. They were the boogeymen of the feminists for years until they got replaced by incels about two or three years ago.

[–]istira_balegina 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I am convinced most of this sub joined this distinct subreddit because of their internalized left-ish hatred to MRAs that they havent yet shed, and not because the mensright sub is actually toxic.

[–]gurthanix 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Personally, I'm on this subreddit because the mensrights sub is full of the same type of low-quality content (screencaps of social media posts, extrapolation from anecdotes) that I hate about so many feminist communities, only with the genders flipped. Maybe 10% of the content there is actually of significant things (actual studies, actions and statements by government agencies, etc.)

[–]Flaktrack 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can't speak for others but I just come here because it's one of the only active men's subs that isn't redpill type garbage or feminist indoctrination in disguise. The mensrights sub is generally a good time, but it does occasionally see bursts of activity from the shit subs.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I disagree. I am very interested in learning about these issues from a male perspective, but at the same time, I find a lot of the tradcon and "incel" (I hate that word) talking points on mensrights to be repulsive.

If you were at college at the time you should consider filling a Title IX complaint. Maybe it isn't too late to get her degree revoked.

Yes male consent hasn't ever really taken seriously or even acknowledged as being needed, fortunately it seems to be more so these days.

What?

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Without doxing myself m, I can say the bare minimum . When the accuser back tracked publicly and said the dangerous rape had in fact been "accidental," I asked her to please update the original accusation online.

I was threatened the same day by a title IX coordinator who had dug up an old online smear against me. Many years prior, an angry ex girlfriend of mine had threatened to reveal naked pictures of myself to my family if I didn't give her money. As humiliated as I was, I refused. She posted a bunch of bullshit about how I was an asshole online and linked the pages about 50,000 times so it came up as the top google search for my name.

I was pretty humiliated by it. However the original ex eventually apologized to me and took it down. The title IX coordinator ultimately reposted the horrible stuff about me after it was taken down. She did it because she told me to stop talking about my friends innocence and I didn't stop.

I have 6 months left to file my lawsuit. I think I am going to reach out to my state representative and also to the district attorney. But that's another story altogether.

Reading about Title IX stories, I've found that mine is pretty tame comparatively. It's weird that a title IX coordinator got involved since neither the accuser or the accused were in college.

That's like having a firefighter that starts fires or a cop that murders people.

[–]teaandtalk 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"chosen to believe." Christ, how stupid do you have to be to think you should believe everything [gender] says - as if humanity isn't full of scumbags of all genders.

[–]HumanSpinach2 -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm incredibly sorry that happened to you and your friend.

MeToo did have a very positive impact in encouraging a lot of women to come forward with their stories. And the high-profile rapists with multiple victims, whose tendencies were an "open secret", got the justice they deserved. However, "taking a leap of faith" and believing any accusation by default is incredibly stupid.

[–]Oncefa2left-wing male advocate 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's too bad it was only women though.

The issue is not gendered the way people assume. But our one-sided care about women causes male victims to be 9 times less likely to speak up, and a full 100 times less likely to receive justice.

We didn't need #MeToo so much as we did #MenToo.

She couldn't even defend her thesis all the way through the end of the article. The first chunk of the article is all about right wing bad faith (fair enough) and then she starts in on the "no true feminist" fallacies. But in the last three paragraphs she just drops the pretense and starts writing about the horrible consequences that occur when society doesn't believe all individual women.

The New York Times has got to be the shittiest, yellowest rag in the entire liberal media sphere.

"all" is implicit in "Believe women" because the statement is nearly vacuous without it because almost everyone has already believed a woman. Almost everyone was taught their name by their mother, and they believed her.

I will say this. Differently to these "feminists" like Susan Faludi and Alyssa Milano, I actually do care about women, and I have seen the story about Tara Reade and I will say I completely support her. This self-destruction institutional feminism is doing is disgusting to me.

Did you read the piece? It's very accurate.

The rallying cry was "believe women" before conservatives got mad and turned it into "believe all women".

[–]Alataire 20 points21 points22 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Isn't that still sexist though? Still feeds into the whole "women are victims" and it ignores the victims that are even less likely to be believed...

[+]TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK -11 points-10 points-9 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

women have been trying to get men to take rape and sexual assault seriously for a very long time now! they've actually been victimized

[–]Alataire 25 points26 points27 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's an overly broad statement that is defied by the experience of men who have been raped and then told they weren't. Actual victimisation is not unique to a gender. Rape and sexual assault is happening to both men and women, and if research is to be believed at similar annual rates.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Do you believe Warren with regards to her accusation of sexism by Sanders?

[–]smeltaway[S] 45 points46 points47 points 6 years ago* (30 children) | Copy Link

New York Times as of 3 years ago disagrees with you. It clearly discusses "Believe All Women" as the feminist rallying cry, and if memory serves that is entirely accurate.

Ironically, the piece is arguing against feminism using this as a rallying cry because of the problems it causes.

Edit: including a relevant quote from the article

I think it's less intentionally muddying the waters and more describing practice as opposed to theory.

I think an appropriate analog is Black Lives Matter. It's supposed to be interpreted as 'Black Lives Matter, Too', but in practice it often comes across as 'Only Black Lives Matter', even if unintentionally.

In theory, 'Believe Women' should be interpreted as 'sexual assault is a thing that happens and claims of such shouldn't be dismissed out of hand'. In practice, it comes across as 'raising any doubts about claims made by a woman is proof you hate women. Anything less than absolute and immediate condemnation of the Duke lacrosse team is obvious and irrefutable misogyny.'

I don't think so. If Alice says "$subset is important" and Bob responds "$set is important", to which Alice responds "you must hate $subset!", it's not unreasonable for Bob, or neutral observer Charlie, to interpret "$subset is important" to mean "ONLY $subset is important." If it meant "$subset matters, too," there would be no conflict with "$set is important".

[–]jugashvili_cunctator 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I think the context is important there. The whole BLM movement was built around the argument that the murder of black people, mainly by the police, wasn't being taken seriously.

And generally, if you say e.g. "Uber Drivers Matter," no one would take you as suggesting that only Uber drivers matter. Obviously, there is an implicit argument there that people are acting as if Uber drivers don't matter in some way. You have to be openly hostile to interpret, for example, "The Rights of Children Matter" as suggesting that adults shouldn't have rights or something. If you do, it seems reasonable to assume you don't care about whatever issue the slogan is attempting to bring attention to, and anyone who believes that the issue is important will see you as callous towards children.

Not going to get into whether or not BLM was correct, but the slogan was pretty unambiguous.

By contrast, #believewomen clearly means "believe accusations of sexual assault" and trying to reframe it as just meaning "support women emotionally while investigating their claims appropriately" is shameless, shocking hypocrisy.

You mean black men, black women gets shot at the same rate as white women, which is to say not much at all.

I think the context is important there. The whole BLM movement was built around the argument that the murder of black people, mainly by the police, wasn't being taken seriously.

Somehow including black women in this was fine. But white men were not targeted by police right? For their maleness

[–]Honokeman 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've seen this put similarly with "if someone says 'save the rainforests', you don't respond 'save all forests'". And by itself I agree with that. But if someone did say "save all forests" and was told that meant they hated rainforests, I would doubt the 'too' nature of the rainforest movement.

And I think you bring up a good point, that someone championing a cause will see generalizing the issue as being callus towards the specific. I agree. All I'm saying is that to an outside observer it can look like (in your examples) the rights of children are being prioritized over the rights of adults, or that Uber drivers matter more than other drivers.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely, it's easy to get the main message of BLM. But it's a lot more ambiguous when it's Believe All Women when the main aim is just Believe Women, not Believe All Women no matter the evidence.

I don't think it takes any mental gymnastics to think "if stating the importance of a general group instead of a subset of that group is evidence of holding animus towards the subset, then only the subset is important."

A and Not(A and B) only evaluates true if A is True and B is False. If this is gymnastics then I'm Simone Biles.

[–]Flaktrack 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One of the co-founders was a black supremacist who thinks white people are soulless machines.

It most certainly was used as an exclusionary weapon by some people. That doesn't take away from the importance of their main points, but it does explain some of their violent and hateful actions and ultimately how they became irrelevant.

[–]smackshack2 19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can you tell me the difference between the two? If i said "Women are Dumb" after an individual woman does something stupid, i would be rightly and roundly criticized for making a broad sexist statement denigrating all women. Saying "Women" means "All Women" in the defacto sense.

This is gaslighting.

Bruh, it was always a motte bailey slogan that meant you should believe all women when they made an accusation and then when having to defend that massive leeway it gave to women it was merely said to be 'look into it' demand. Which, in case why not a different fucking slogan all together?

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 27 points28 points29 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

believewomen is the motte-and-bailey par excellence.

Remember when it was used against Bernie when he and Warren disagreed about what was said? #believewomen popped up in that dispute.

I guess NPR is now a conservative talking head? Or maybe you just want to admit theres a teeny possibility the media is gaslighting the country:

[straight from the horse's mouth'(https://twitter.com/NPR/status/961277626986868736)

"Believe all women" has been the rallying cry of the #MeToo movement - a mantra embraced by some but dismissed by others as naive. The tension over the credibility of women is nothing new, especially in rape investigations

The rallying cry was "believe all women" and youll never rewrite the whole damn internet to make it otherwise now that its politically inconvenient.

Lets say youre right.....Its not particularly important. Help me remember:

During #metoo and Kavanaugh did many prominent democrats .... Oh I dunno say something exactly like this:

"I’m here with people of conscience who believe that when a woman comes forward that she has a right to be listened to, and there needs to be a full investigation.”

Do you feel Reade has been given the stage Ford was given?

Was she given a "full investigation"? I assume its forthcoming!

" For a woman to come forward in the glaring lights of focus, nationally, you've got to start off with the presumption that at least the essence of what she's talking about is real"

Was that true for Reade like it was Ford? Do you believe the "essence" of what she is talking about is real? is Biden... in essence....a rapist?

Or is Biden a hypocrite? He can not be both. Hoisted by his own petard....who could have seen this coming?

What did we call the fools on the right who spoke out against the dangers of denying due process and slaughtering men and their careers wholesale based on nought but an allegation? We called them misogynists and rape-apologists.

How are you different now than they were then?

Have we tried saying we dont believe Reade because she didnt report the crime perfectly?

I got your back bro.....this was covered when one of the major proponents of #metoo was a bit of a rapist herself

let me quote the bullshit:

Too often, survivors of sexual misconduct have to be “perfect victims” in order to be believed. They must dress in perfect clothes (nothing too short or revealing), report the crime perfectly (delays are impermissible), and, perhaps most importantly, have a perfect past.

what about her poor memory?

Hell have another from across the pond that tackles how victims may suffer from PSTD that can cloud their memory even

So we dont believe Reade because she isnt a perfect victim is that it?

oh what a twisted web we weave.

Right so some media said "Believe Women" some said "Believe All Women". I get that.

Your own source says the Times said "Believe ALL Women" and they shouldnt have. But they did say it. And so did NPR. They were both floating around.

Thats my point which even your source cant deny....which is good because it absolutely happened and it wasnt just a "far right" conspiracy. Do you the goal post here? You said it was Believe Women until conservatives got mad. But neither NPR nor The New York Times are conservative news media.

But still I feel this sementical circle jerk is nothing more than a dog whistle. It doesnt functionally matter because BelieveWomen was treated FUNCTIONALLY the same as BelieveALLWomen.

Ford was believed. I gave you quite a some quotes from prominent politicians about how they ideologically felt about her accusation. (If you need more quotes just let me know. There are literally hundreds, probably thousands.) But they are not ideologically consistent with Reade. This is troublesome because I dont find it compellingly ethical to use sexual violence against women as a political weapon.

There were some who were opposed to our new standard. They were publicly ridiculed. So how do we disregarded Reade's accusations without shooting ourselves with the same misogynistic rape-apologists guns we levelled at others during the Ford-Kavanaugh #Metoo showdown?

and dont say because Reade's not a perfect victim because we already covered that when conservatives felt a 30 year old accusation that couldnt be corroborated did not rise to the level of warranting an extensive investigation were just the musings of misogynists.

Its a double standard thats too glaring for a semantical smoke and mirror show to obfuscate.

I've found leftists are all for doing so, the 'idea' of whatever they're trying to manifest (altering history to fit an ideological view on the world) is more important than reality.

And, on a related note, despite them accusing everyone else of 'gaslighting' they're frequently practitioners--even masters--of it themselves.

I've found that leftists are well rehearsed in doing so.
